Memories
Gabrielle
looked at the group of young Amazons. She had always known this day would eventually
come… the day they would want to hear about the tall, dark warrior who had
stolen her heart… sacrificed immortality for her… and ended up giving his life
for her. She'd known it would come- but she still wasn't ready for it. "So, you
want to know about Ares," she said softly. "Yeah! The God of War from personal
experience!" One of the Amazons called. "God of War… yeah, I suppose that is
all anyone else ever knew. But I saw a different side of him. Oh, I was well
acquainted with the God of War… but I loved the man beneath that."
Gabrielle
could see that her audience was already getting caught up in the tale, and more
still were joining. "We had to hide our relationship for years. He was afraid
of how some of the other Gods who had an interest in me- namely Artemis- would
react. I was worried about how Xena would react. So we kept pretending to hate
each other. He would chase Xena, I would warn him to leave her alone, he would
laugh, and everyone was fooled. That is, until he gave up his immortality. Xena
knew right away that, despite what he said, he had done it for me. Ares and I
were shocked when she gave us her blessing. She decided to take Eve to
Amphipolis, give us a few days alone to help adjust to him being mortal. To
this day, I wish she wouldn't have done that. Oh, I don't blame her, but I
still wish we would've stayed together. With me still not fully recovered from
my injury, and Ares reeling from his sudden mortality, we didn't have a chance.
It was just a simple group of thugs. We should have been able to handle it with
no problems. But they got the upper hand. One of them got me down and raised
his sword, ready to end my life. But Ares stepped in front of me and…" Gabrielle's voice trailed off
momentarily. "They killed him," she finally managed in just above a whisper.
Having told the only story she would that day, Gabrielle stood. The Amazons,
many in tears, watched their proud, brave, and heartbroken Queen walk away.
And there you
have it. Don't even ask how this came about, I blame it on the idea fairy. Just
another one of those "way too early to be trying to write" kind of stories. Any
