Lily stood at the edge of the lake, watching the sun go down behind the forest. Who knew her life
would come to this. There was way too much confusion. Why did it have to be like this?

A flock of swans paddled their way across the water, gliding on the edge. A small breeze of blew
upon their silky white feathers, which caused them to loosen. Softly one feather flew off and landed at her
feet.

The day was perfect for relaxing, something Lily needed. As she rested her head upon the trunk of
the tree she took shelter under, her mind began unfolding each confounded thought.

"Lily?" a voice asked. A girl was heading across the green field that separated the lake from the
school. She approached Lily cautiously, as if afraid the sitting girl would attack.

"Hey," Lily responded unemotionally. She wasn't supposed to be like this. Why did she have to
hurt others?

"I thought I would find you here," said the girl as she kept her distance. There was fear in her
voice as she said, "You've been avoiding me." It was a quiet mousy statement. The one Lily never did
like. It meant that there was something the girl needed protection. She couldn't give that now.

Nothing but silence was heard, not even the sound of the swans bathing gracefully in the water.

"I need you to tell me yourself. From your mouth," the girl demanded, her tone straining. She
was hiding from the sadness that threatened to overtake her.

"Charley," Lily whispered, "You don't need me anymore. Live your life the way you want now.
You'll be fine without me." It pained her to speak these words, even though they were all true. In reality,
it was Lily that needed the protection, not just Charley.

"You can't be serious to think that." Charley was shocked at the older girl's reply.

"Why can't I?" Lily asked.

"Because you need me as much as I need you."

"That is very true." Lily smiled. Perhaps she had underestimated her lover. "But what else is
true, may not be what is the most pleasant."

"They were right."

"Indeed." Lily sighed and finally looked upon her former lover's face. "No one can avoid fate."

"You know I'll miss you," Charley said. She stepped away from under the tree.

"There is no lie around me not feeling the same. I cannot deny that."

"I will always love you. Maybe because of this we cannot be friends just yet, but in the future,
this relationship will bring us close."

"And I will always love you. Now, go on before your friends worry. It will be dark soon." Lily
stayed in her spot, but turned and faced the lake again.

"Good-bye," Charley said. It was a small gesture, but she walked up to Lily and brushed her
warm lips upon Lily's cold, wind kissed ones.

"Bye," she sighed.

Another breeze tickled Lily's face. Night had finally fallen and the swans were gone.

"I really think you ought to come to bed," a male voice said from her right. Her new love stood
calling her from the protection of the cradling tree.

"James. You're late," Lily responded with a sly grin.

"Yes, I know." Lily leapt to her feet and ran up to him. "Stupid teachers. They always seem to
be at the wrong place at the wrong time." The two embraced under the starry canopy that covered the
green field.

"The other students are talking about us," Lily stated after a small kiss from James.

"Let them be jealous. I've go you now. No one else."
