Midnight Til Dawn
A/N- this is a little random thing from Daisuke's POV. Hiakri and Daisuke must deal with Taichi's death.... R&R, it sucks, I know, but don't flame!!!
I streached on the sofa, and I looked at the door. "Who in the world," I murmured, pushing Chibimon off of me and sitting up. "Coming," I called, and I opened the door. The night was wild- rain pounded the figure and it was so dark I couldn't even tell who it was. A stray lightning bolt luminated the sky, and I saw who was in front of me.
Hikari.
"Can I come in, Daisuke?" she asked me, and I held the door for her. She kicked off her sopping sneakers by the door and collapsed onto the sofa.
"You're a wreck. Why are you here so early? You weren't supossed to be here til 7:00, hell, it's only midnight!"
"Yeah, I know," she said quietly. I looked at her, locked the door, and sat next to her. Chibimon leapt onto her lap and rested against her knees.
"Tai's- he's-" she began, fighting with her voice. She was near tears. I blinked. "Tai? What? How?"
"I donno," her voice choked on out of her throat. "He started throwing up around 11:30, and now-"
"Now what? We need to take him to the hospital-" I reached for my car keys.
"Daisuke- Tai's dead." My eyes went wide.
"Oh, Hikari," I reached out for her hand, but she jerked away from my touch. "Yamato and Takeru are over there now- Yamato's having a fit. I don't know if Takeru can control him much longer. When I left he was trying to stab himself with a letter opener." I snorted. "Daisuke it's not funny!" she cried, burying her face in her hands. I smacked myself.
"I know, I know," I whispered, rubbing her back. And how is Takeru's little woman taking this?"
"Miyako is upset, of course, but why do you ask?"
"Because TK is my best friend, Kari, just like you are." She looked up at me. "Daisuke,"
"Yeah?"
"I'm sorry. I know you loved Taichi like a brother too." I put my hand behind my head. "Yeah, well, he wasn't really my he did seem like it,brother, you know, but he seemed like that, didn't he-"
"Daisuke. You're babbling."
"Oh. I'm sorry." She hugged me around the waist and I sighed to pat her head. Some comfort I was- my inane gestures did little to make her feel better. She wiped her nose on my shirt and looked up at me.
"I'm sorry, Dai,"
"No biggie. You want some soup?"
"Thanks," she straightned her skirt. I made the soup, and as I did, I studied her. She's changed through the years- she's settled down more, gained a little more weight- not a lot, mind you, she's still a skinny little waif. She's gone and grown her hair out, but she never dyed it as did Miyako.
I sigh and hand her a cup of my soup. "Thanks," she says again. I think that "thanks" and "sorry" are her two most common words.
"Dai," she looks up at me. "When Jun- when she-"
"Had a sex change?"
"No,"
"Decided she was a lesbian?"
"No, when she died. What was it like?" I put my arm behind my head. "Weeel, I have to say it was a relief. Jun was an annoying cow."
"Daisuke! You can't honestly think that about her."
"Well, no," I've tried to avoid the subject of Jun's death, but I can't. Hikari hugs me.
"It's ok. We're all in the same boat, yeah?"
"Yeah."
We talked a little longer, and she left at daylight. She didn't come back. I still don't know what happened to her. I think she might have died, but I'll never be sure. The only thing I'm sure of is that those six hours of midnight till dawn were the most meaningful, and in all my life, I've never once forgotten them.
Hikari, where-ever you are, I love you.
