This is a piece that I wrote with some friends. It was an English class assignment and the
main idea was to update Romeo and Juliet to fit in with the modern day. This is what we
came up with. Please read and review.
Romeo and Juliet
The 90's version
Once upon a time in Verona Kentucky,
Mr. Montague got a little bit lucky.
You see the Capulets had a really big fight,
And Mrs. Capulet took off for the night.
She went to her friend Mrs. Montague,
Seeking advice on what she should do.
When she got there her friend was not home.
She and Mr. Montague were left all alone!
The next thing you know, their clothes have been shed;
They're lying together in Montague's bed.
The product of this affair is young Juliet,
And soon they discover she's not a Capulet.
Mr. Capulet decides to stay wed,
But only if communication between the two families is dead.
The families keep feuding as years go by.
No one but the parents really knows why.
Sometime later it happened by chance,
Romeo and Juliet meet at a dance.
Very quickly their love does grow,
But it is not safe for their parents to know.
They finally get married without anyone's knowledge.
They decide to keep quiet until they go to college.
Later as Juliet is doing her hair,
She overhears talk of a secret affair.
She listens more closely, and finds out the truth,
Then hurries to call Romeo from a phone booth.
After a long discussion and many shed tears,
They plan suicide over a couple of beers.
They decide on poison, it was the easiest way.
They ended their lives the very next day.
For never was a story of more woe
than this of Juliet and her Romeo.
