Million Miles Away
The Offspring

Wufei sat in his office at the Preventer head quarters. Outside his window, it was raining. He laced his fingers together and slumped back into his swivel chair. The computer at his desk was blankly displaying the Preventer symbol screen saver. It was dark in his office, as he liked it to be after-hours. Wufei listened as Sally, who was packing up, yawned and slammed her briefcase down onto her own desk. He frowned and turned his seat to look out the window. He sighed.

There was a time
Looking through myself
Wanting to pretend
If I escaped
I could fill myself
I don't think you can
Been far and wide
But that hole inside
Never really leaves
I went away
What I really left
Left behind was me

he heard faintly, as the venetian blinds on his door clinked and clacked. I'm going home, Wufei. You want to keep the night fires burning, or should I tell the cabbie to wait for you?
Wufei drowsily shook his head and closed his eyes. I'm going to stay for a while. Go ahead.
Sally nodded and eyeballed the back of his chair, the back of his shiny head, and his form. His usually stiff and rigid form that mimicked that of a steel bar. She shrugged into her trench coat, still halfway into his office. When she had pulled her scarf around her neck, Sally took a breath to make another statement. But she didn't. Instead, she backed away and let the door shut on its own.

It's telling me
To be on my way...home
Million miles away
I can't stay
Million miles away

Languidly taking the elastic band from his queue, Wufei let his head roll onto his shoulder. His sooty black, permanently angry eyes became tiny slits as he watched the thick streams of rain water pour over the tinted window. It didn't even look like water. Distorted and viscous. Wufei buried his face in his hands and wished for home. Wished for his family. His clan. He wished that he had done something, something to save his home. Now it was gone, and he was the only one left.

Each passing day
Every passing face
Seems like such a blur
I long to be home
Lying silently next to her
Just to be back
By her side is all
All I really need
I went away
But what I really left was me

I am sorry, he said lamentably, to any of those who may have been listening. Please forgive me. Master Long. Nataku.
Alone, in his office and in the world, Wufei felt stinging tears come forward into his eyes. As the heavens wept their tears of renewal, Wufei wept for his own lack of strength and courage. He sat there, everything he knew torn away by war, and cried. Outside, Sally walked out of the building and got into the cab she'd called. From the thirteenth floor, it looked like a Matchbox car. A small yellow toy rolling away into the distance. He watched it evaporate into the night, through sore, clouded eyes.

I need to be
Getting on my way...home
Million miles away
