Max stared out at the rain sliding down the
glass, trying to forget what she had did.
She had killed Ben.
But the
rain didn't make her forget. If anything it made her remember all the more
clearly.
Ben whispering softly about the "high place."A place of sunshine
and joy. Peace and happiness.
A place where there was no Manticore. No,
Lydecker.
She remembered feeling her hands go around Ben's neck and snapping
it.
She remembered the sharp crack that was his neck being broken. Then Ben's
word's about the "high place" were silenced forever.
Pulling herself out of
her thoughts Max angrily wiped away a tear that was rolling down her cheek.
She heard the soft whisper of wheels on the floor that signaled Logan's
approach.
"Hey." She said gruffly not looking at him.
"Are you OK?" He
asked.
"What do you think?" Max's voice sounded sharp even to her.
"You
had to do it." Logan replied.
Max whirled to face him her eyes angry and sad
at the same time, "had to?" She echoed her voice tight.
"Had to! Logan he was
my brother! And all you say is I had to do it!" She was screeching now, tears
flowing unchecked down her face.
"He was killing innocents." Logan said as if
trying to console Max.
"Still doesn't matter," she argued her voice fierce,"
he was my brother. My brother!"
Then Max collapsed sobbing," why? Why'd he
tell me to kill him? Why?"
"Max," Logan's voice was soft.
He gently
touched her on her arm.
Max flinched.
"Shh," Logan whispered pulling her
onto his lap.
Max buried her face into his shoulder crying
heartbrokenly.
Logan let her cry. He'd occasionally say "it's all right" or
hum softly to her.
Slowly at first Max stopped crying.
"Guess you think
I'm a big baby, Huh?" She asked not looking at him.
"No, I don't." Logan
replied.
Max untangled herself out of Logan's arms," I've got to go." She
said getting up and going to the door. As she walked through the door she
whispered," thank you Logan."
He's free from his suffering. Ben I'll miss you. But I guess I have a guardian angel looking down on me now. Rest in Peace Ben.
