Harry woke up with a jab to the side. "Ouch!" he yelled. He rolled over sleepily. A huge pair of green eyes stared back at him. "Dobby?" he said, confused. "'Tis Dobby the house-elf, sir!" Dobby squeaked. "Dobby came to wish Harry Potter a merry Christmas!" Harry yawned and sat up. "Merry Christmas, Dobby," he said. Then, spotting the pile of presents at the end of his bed, he climbed over. "Hey Ron, wake up! It's Christmas!" Harry called. Ron woke with a start. "Christmas?" he said, confused for a moment. Then, "Oh!" He too came over and started opening his own gifts. Around them, Seamus, Dean, Colin, Dennis, and Neville, the other boys in Harry and Ron's dorm, started to wake up and open their presents.

Far away, in a small town called Sunnydale in California, a girl named Buffy Summers and her sister Dawn were sitting at the table drinking coffee with Buffy's friends Willow Rosenburg, Xander Harris, and Xander's girlfriend Anya.

"So what exactly is Christmas?" Anya said with great interest. "Well, it's when kids are bullied into thinking that a fat guy in red breaks into their house to leave toys so the kids won't screw up all year," Xander said carefully, folding his hands and looking at Anya expectantly.

Anya frowned. "A fat guy in red?" she said. "Why not blue?" "Because blue isn't really his color," Xander replied.

Anya's frown deepened. "He should wear blue," she grumbled. "I think you're kind of missing the point," Willow said gently. "What's to miss? A fat guy who obviously has no fashion sense. I think that covers it." Anya looked around, as if daring anyone to disagree.

Willow gave up and turned to Buffy. "Are you OK?" she said. Buffy set down her coffee. "Yeah," she said with a small smile. "First Christmas without Mom, it is hard, you know? But Mom wouldn't have wanted us to miss out because of her." Buffy gave Dawn's shoulder a squeeze. Dawn mustered a small smile too.

"Prue, is the coffee ready yet?" Piper said, collapsing into the closest kitchen chair. "Almost." Prue glanced up. "You look exhausted. How late were you up last night?" Piper tried and failed to stifle a yawn before replying. "About 1 in the morning. I was trying to find something about that weird string monster that attacked Phoebe yesterday."

An amused smile crossed Prue's face. "Weird string monster?" she repeated, setting a cup of coffee in front of Piper.

Piper nodded and took a long drink. "It was pretty strange. Phoebe said it had strings attached to it, like a puppet. And before it disappeared it sang, 'bye bye bye!'" Prue laughed. "What did it look like?" "It had jet black hair with red tips, and it actually looked....fairly human. Except of course, the sparks coming out of the fingers thing," a new voice said. Phoebe stumbled into the kitchen, half-awake. "Morning, Pheebs," Prue said. Phoebe made some ineligible sounds and poured herself some coffee.
