spoilers: not really, it's set one year after Forever in a Day
A/n: I've got two hours of nothing and this is what I come up with. Forgive me, it's better than math homework. ::shudders::
I look up from my beer and he's here again. I'm a regular here, so I know most people. He's been here before. I've never actually met him, but I know he's military, just like the woman. She's here too today with him, along with the brown haired kid with glasses. I've seen them around sometimes too. The other one is missing. Strange, he is, rarely see him smile.
They all sit down across the room. I watch them, without actually "watching" them, pretending to take a drink or that I'm looking at someone else. There's something different about their mood today, lile something ugly being represed just below the surface. They look like their trying to keep the mood light and the woman and older man keep shooting glances at the kid.
I don't know why I think of him as a kid when he obviously isn't. He just seems - young, like he needs protection. The older one, well, he's been around. He knows what's going on - and he knows what this guy's going through. The women - she looks worried, though she tries to hide it. Her worry reminds me of how I felt about my younger brother.
I study them again. They look close enough to be siblings, or it might just be the fake familiarity about two people when they get to be really close friends. Not with the older man though. Between them, there's a spark, something fizzing, flaring quickly and brightly sometimes before reducing once again into almost nothing. They know it, I think, they just wont recognize it - yet.
The older guy and the woman are really the one's that are talking. The younger one - he's just sitting there, studying the walls, not listening to the others. I realize with a jolt that the guys lost someone close, real close. And suddenly I also know that it isn't the first time.
The other two fall silent, suddenly realizing that they've lost their companion. The older guy says something and the kid just smiles - the kind of sad smile that I've used myself some times. The kind used to reassure people that you're okay even when you and they know that you're not.
They get up to leave, which is good because the younger guy looks like he's about to loose it. By the speed in which he left I think he realized it to. The others share one last worried glance and follow him. Through the window, I can see him looking at the stars with an intense longing that stabs through me and I wonder who he lost.
They leave, the bar is empty and I am left alone with my own twisted memories, brought to life by a sad blue eyed kid.
