"Medium" – Episode 2.1 – Summary

In "Medium", Fi decides that she wants to go to a séance where a famous medium will be, in hopes of contacting Rick. Her hopes are shattered when the medium is revealed as a fake by a man named Patrick Raymond. Fi is heartbroken because just moments ago she thought she really was speaking to her father. Meanwhile, Molly is troubled by memories of her husband. Everything in the house in Hope Springs reminds her of Rick. Even Irene begins to quote things that only Molly knew Rick had said. Everyone is pressuring her into recording "She Sells", but Molly is uncomfortable with it.

In the meantime, Fi and Clu go to Mr. Raymond's office. Fi tells him that she really admires the way he reveals all the phony mediums. When she tells him that if it weren't for him, no one would ever know how to tell apart the real ones from the fakes, he is clearly upset. He tells her that none of them are real, and that he'd know it if he saw the real thing. Fi asks him how he could possibly be sure, and he blurts out, "Because I am the real thing!" Fi is angry at first, and says that she doesn't believe him. Mr. Raymond says that he doesn't care what she thinks – "Who in their right mind would want to be able to talk to the dead." Then Fi realizes the reality of his words, and tells him that if he can really do that, then he can help her. Mr. Raymond is amazed by her sudden change in behavior, and says that he won't help her, and his gift went away anyway after his wife died. He says that since then he has been going to all these different people claiming to be mediums, and they were all fakes, so he decided to reveal them. He says that he'll reveal them all if he can. Fi tells him, "You're so angry, you don't even know what it's doing to you." She storms out of his office.

The scene flips back to Molly at the recording studio where she and Rick used to make all their records. She and Irene are arguing until Ned interrupts. Irene begins to tell Molly that they're a team, and she wants it to be right, but at the same time Molly is having visions of Rick saying the same thing. Soon enough, she can't take it anymore, and runs from the room.

Back at the Phillips' house, Mr. Raymond shows up at the door. Fi doesn't want to talk to him until he tells her that Jack came to see him and told him how much he hurt her. Mr. Raymond says that he's willing to help her now, so Fi lets him inside. He tells her that he needs an object of Rick's, so she brings him his guitar. After holding it for a few seconds, Mr. Raymond gives it back to Fi and urges her to "play whatever comes." She plays that same melody we hear in nearly every episode when someone is thinking about Rick. Fi says, "I don't even know what that was," and Mr. Raymond replies, "That was hello."

Later, Fi is in her room, still playing the tune on her dad's guitar. Molly walks in and asks Fi where she heard it. Fi tells her that it just came to her – maybe from him. This upsets Molly, and Fi tries to tell her about the medium, but she won't listen. She tells Fi that she hates the memories, and that she has no idea what it's like for her. Then she realizes how hard it is on Fi too, and sits down next to her on the bed. She knows the melody too, and shows Fi how to play it correctly.

The camera angle then switches to a view of them from down the hallway, and we see Jack standing in his doorway, about to cry. He heard everything.
