Yes, I need a better title for this. All characters belong to CLAMP, as per usual. More author notes at the end of the fic.
He was sitting in his chair, musing about his book and its guardians. He'd finally decided enough was enough and he had quite enough cards, so now all was left was finish transferring power to his latest creation. He made a few notes on a scrap of parchment, and then put down his pen, preoccupied. He was worried about his new creation. Something just wasn't right...
He was interrupted by a soft tugging on his robes. He looked down to see the object of his thoughts gazing up at him with curious violet eyes. He smiled slightly, and picked the little angel up, placing him on his lap. "Hello, Yue."
Yue cuddled up to him. Clow began to gently stroke the soft, pale hair. "Was there something you wanted to ask me?"
The angel nodded. "I'm not going to be this tall forever, am I?" he asked, sounding slightly discontent.
Being less than half Clow's own height, Yue sometimes reminded him of a little elf - albeit one that took itself way too seriously. He chuckled. "No, Yue. Once I give you some elemental cards and more of my power, you'll be full human height."
Yue digested this silently. "Thank you, master," he said, eventually. Clow took a brush from a nearby table and began to brush the boy's hair. Yue leaned into the contact happily.
"Master," spoke up Yue again, after a while. "Why did you create me?"
He'd been expecting this question for a while, and so had his answer ready. "I created you, Yue, to be a companion for the master of the cards."
Yue gazed at him with wide eyes. "That's you, right, Master?"
Clow nodded. It was true, at that moment, of course. "It's very lonely, being the most powerful magician in the world."
"But... don't you have Kerberos?"
He laughed, gently. "I love Kerberos very much, but he's no great companion. Kerberos is a Guardian first and foremost."
"Oh," said Yue. He sighed. "Then I'll try to be a good companion for you, Master."
Clow ruffled his little angel's hair. "Thank you, Yue. And I think it's about time you got some sleep. It's late, you know," he continued, scooping Yue up in his arms and placing him gently in the bed.
"Love you, Master," said Yue, sleepily.
He spend several long minutes sitting on the edge of the bed, just watching his newest creation sleep. The blind adoration he sometimes saw in Yue's eyes when the moon angel looked at him disturbed him slightly. He'd created Yue to be a companion, not a worshipper. Clow wasn't a god, and didn't want to be.
And he didn't understand how it had happened. Kerberos called him 'master', but he had his ways of undermining the formal term of address and bringing the greatest magician in the world firmly back to earth. He constantly referred to his personality as 'twisted', for starters. Kerberos wasn't afraid to talk back to him.
Clow worried, because the powerful love and complete trust in him that Yue displayed could all too easily be abused. He wasn't sure he trusted himself to not take advantage of it accidentally - he certainly wasn't about to do it consciously.
He would choose his successor carefully, he decided. He would choose someone that would love Yue the way he needed to be loved.
He only hoped Yue would be happy with his decision.
~ END ~
No, I don't seriously think that Clow would have created Yue as a child first. But don't you think Child-Yue is one of the cutest concepts ever?
