Disclaimer: You know by now
A/N: I swear it's true: I start crying every time I read Uncanny X-Men #390. The way Peter sacrifices himself, Cecelia's futile fight to save his life... But seeing how it affected people has made me think.
I know that he was cremated, and that Kitty let out his ashes on the plains of Siberia. But this is what I would have said if anybody had asked me to speak at his funeral. This is, in short, how I feel about the situation. You don't have to agree or disagree. It's my speech.
IF ANYBODY HAD ASKED ME TO HOLD A SPEECH AT COLOSSUS' FUNERAL
by Fata Morgana
Piotr Nikolaievitch Rasputin is gone. The friend, teammate, family member. The solid pillar of strenght that was Colossus will never again be there to support us when we need it.
He gave his life so others may live. He sacrificed himself to put an end to the horrible legacy virus. All over the world, he ought to be celebrated as a hero.
At least among those who never knew him.
Peter was always a special person. He came from a farm on Siberia, and was very loyal to his family. I wonder if he had a hard time, when he had to leave them and start a new life in America with the X-Men. I wonder if being Russian made that harder for him, considering where he went. Russians and communists were not thought very well of in those days, and probably not now either (at least communists).
Peter was never a "threat" that way.
He was a poet, and an artist. His metal coating hid a heart of gold. He was caring and loyal to his friends. Of course, he had his faults. He almost killed Pete Wisdom in jealousy when he saw the latter with his his, Peter's, ex-girlfriend Kitty, and it is maybe just as well that he never spoke of his time with the Acolytes.
None of this matter now. We are here to remember the dear, departed friend, who died the most honourable death imaginable.
Or did he?
Peter always took the death of his sweet sister Illyana very hard. He blamed himself. The cure to the legacy virus the end of that terrible threat, was perhaps the only thing that could bring back our old Colossus.
Instead, we lost him completely.
The world that did not know him, ought to celebrate him as a hero.
The rest will have to cope with his death as best as we can.
Death is easy. You just have to let go, and you will be at a final peace, you will not have to fight every day. Clinging on to life is hard. Especially when those around you drop. The death of someone is always hardest for those let behind, those who have to move on.
Damn you, Piotr.
Leaving us like this.
A/N: Probably not what you expected...
Don't get me wrong. I think Colossus is one of the sweetest characters Marvel ever invented.
I'm just mad at him because he's dead.
