Alone

DISCLAIMERS: I do not own Will, Lyra, Pantalaimon, or Kirjava. The wonderful Philip Pullman does. Lucky SOB…

AUTHOR'S NOTES: Umm. The end is sorta confusing. All will be explained once I rewrite Part 2: The Space Between. My puter ate it :*(

She was alone in a dusty world. The land was barren and brown. The sky wasn't much better. There was no sun shining, no stars to see. The only noise was the whipping wind. Aloooonneee the wind seemed to howl. The girl looked around nervously, wondering what was going on. She finally became aware of her surroundings, and realized with a start that she didn't see Pantalaimon. "Pan?" she called as she swung around. He sat calmly behind her, digging through the loose dirt.

The fact that he hadn't been there until she thought of him didn't faze her one bit. "Where are we, Pan? I don't think I've ever been here before. We're not in Oxford anymore, that much I know. Pan, where have we been taken?"

"You've been here before," the marten replied. "You just don't remember. And you took yourself here, you silly girl. You meet them here quite often."

"Meet who? And where is here? Oh Pan, darling, I'm so confused! I've never been here before in my life! I would remember this world, I would!"

The copper-colored weasel just sat, apparently fascinated with the dirt. The girl finally gave up and wandered around, trying to spark a memory. She walked through ever-changing fields, and soon found a flowing stream with luscious plants. The sun was shining brightly here…changing the gloomy world she had started in to a beautiful place she never wanted to leave She looked at the small animal questioningly, but he just ignored her.

She was soon peering into the stream, and wondering if she could catch one of the bright purple fish swimming in the chilly water. So intent on the fish was she that she didn't hear the stranger creep up behind her.

"Lyra? Lyra, is that you?"

She turned around slowly, trying to place the voice. "Sir?" she called, since she could not make out his features with the sun behind him. Wasn't the sun overhead only moments ago? a part of her asked. That small, thinking part was quickly buried in the layers of her mind.

The boy stepped forward, into the shade of a tree, and showed his face to Lyra. "Will?" she whispered, not believing her own eyes. "But…"

"Oh, Lyra!" he cried, embracing her in a warm hug. "I've missed you more than you can believe! The world just isn't right without you!"

"I know, Will. I know. How have you been? How is your world doing? I'm in school now. I've met so many new people! And I think about you every day…"

The children continued talking while their dæmons met on a grassy knoll. Pan stroked the cat's fur, not saying anything. "It will end soon," Kirjava murmured.

"I know. Let them talk, though. You know what tomorrow is."

The cat just nodded.

"Will?! What's going on?" she asked, interrupting a story about his mother and Mary.

"What?"

"Everything is getting blurry! I can't see your face! Will!!"

"Lyra, just hold my hand! You're fading! Lyra, I love --" He got cut off though, as she completely disappeared.

The world quickly returned to barren darkness, leaving the boy all alone.
