Persecution of Innocence
This is a story about the fairys who live on Water Dragon's Isle responding to the poem at the
beginning of the game (the opening FMV after the word 'Squaresoft' flashes across the screen).
Enjoy!

"What was the start of all this?"
The evolution of humans was the ultimate start of all this. Humans were always the ones who
caused problems and chaos. The world would be a whole lot more peaceful if there were no
humans.
"When did the cogs of fate begin to turn?"
This question was a mystery even to the fairies. Was it when the water dried up on Water
Dragon's Isle? Or was it when the fairies who resided in the other world were killed by the
dwarfs? Or was it when we chose to shut the humans out after the massacre that wasn't directly
caused by them?
"Perhaps it is impossible to grasp that answer now,
From deep within the flow of time..."
So many things in life aren't answered. The fairies had never hurt another living thing in their
entire existence, with Razzly being the exception. They had never cast a bad spell against
anyone, never even said anything bad about anyone. Yet they were constantly having a string of
bad luck. Destiny never seemed to deal them a winning hand.
"But, for a certainty, back then,
We loved so many, yet hated so much,"
Yes, even though we never spoke harsh words against anything, we felt contempt for other
species deep within our beings. They were always faster, smarter, or stronger than us. We were
trapped on the other end of the spectrum, the end that would only be noticed when it was gone.
We loved the creatures around us because they could do things we couldn't but hated them for it
as well. It isn't something we could change, it was a part of our nature.
"We hurt others, and were hurt ourselves..."
No, that was wrong. It should have been the other way around. We didn't hurt anybody until we
were hurt ourselves. It was once said, by someone very wise, "How many times can you stab
something until it bleeds, and how many times can you smash something until it breaks ?" We
were the victims of a cold and uncaring world, and we lashed out in the only way we knew how,
the very way in which we were oppressed. Violence became our ally, and that was when we
discovered that all was lost.
"Yet even then, we ran like the wind,"
How can one run if one does not have feet to stand on? Running is for those who can stand, not
for us who can only fly with the winds.
"Whilst our laughter echoed,"
The laughter of other species was always all around us. We worked so hard to join in the
merriness, but it always seemed one step ahead of us. No matter how hard we tried, the laughter
was elusive, as well as the freedom it offered.
"Under cerulean skies..."
Yes, but isn't it also under these same skies that angelus errare, where angels lose their way?
And fairies don't differ all that much from angels.

Author's Notes: I felt that the fairies that lived on Water Dragon's Isle were really screwed over
in the game, so I decided to write something about them. Hoped you enjoyed my first Chrono
Cross fan fic. Ciao for now.
