Kuramitsu's Lullaby

Kuramitsu's Lullaby

Today, I hold an angel in my arms,

Soft to the touch and light as a feather.

Silky and shiny your golden hair is

And wondrously bright your blue eyes are.

Your tiny, meticulously designed hands

Curl onto the blanket that covers your body.

Then your cheerful face suddenly saddens and

Your eyes begin to water.

You want to go to sleep, don't you?

As I bring your quivering body closer to mine

I hum to you a song from long ago

I'm surprised I even remember it.

As you, my little one, drift off to Dreamland

I start thinking about her again,

The woman who my memory refuses to recall.

Did she ever hold me like this?

Did she ever hold me at all?

I asked father time and time again

When I found out that I did have a mother

Only I wasn't supposed to know at all.

He had no answers for me, only icy silence.

So many years I spent searching for her

And the only thing I have to show for it

Is my red hair.

Now that my father is gone,

I know the truth.

Is riches and privilege worth leaving

The woman who loved you behind?

And from what I seen,

The love that came from her,

My father never did find.

So from then on, I promised to myself

Never to take anything for granted,

Especially love,

For love is a gift

Never to be squandered,

Never to be trifled.

If you embrace its power,

No matter where it goes,

It will always come back to you.

I hope that she – my mother –

Eventually found the love that she deserved.

And as for you, my sweet Mihoshi,

Never, ever believe that you are not worthy

Not only of love, but trust, honesty, and companionship.

Even if the search should prove difficult in your life,

I will comfort you and guide you.

I promise I won't steer you wrong,

And by God, I will help make you strong.

But for now, your innocence protects you

From knowledge of such heartbreak.

As I watch you in your slumber,

I remember some of the words in the song,

And I sing them to you as I place you in your crib…

Sleep my baby, sleep my baby

Dream of somewhere far away

Do you remember still

How I hope you always will

Keep the memory of the day the world was born…
