CHAPTER 1: RISING FROM THE DEPTHS OF SLUMBER
29 August 1994
"What's going on? Where am I?" I call out as I open my eyes in a dark room. The room is pitch black with no lights or windows. There is no sign of a door. I'm lying on the cold stone floor and I slowly stand up. The floor is cold under my bare feet and the air around me is thick and chilly. "Is anyone there?" I call out, panic laced in my voice. I can't remember what happened and how I got here. I have no idea where I am or what time it is. "Mum!" I call out, feeling my way around the walls. "Dad!". No response. I can feel the panic rising in my chest and a ball forming in my throat. "IS ANYONE THERE!" I call out again, desperate for an answer. I'm trying not to panic but there is no sign of a doorknob or keyhole on the walls. No light switch or candle on the wall. Nothing. "Accio my wand!" I call out, but nothing happens. I sigh. There was no way for my wand to even get to me in this room, or wherever I was. I sink to the ground and tuck my knees up to my chest, covering them with my nightgown. "How did I get here?" I mumble to myself resting my chin on my knees. I sat there in silence, trying to see if I could hear anyone. Nothing. I move my hand to my left forearm to where my dark mark lies engraved on my skin. I freeze when my fingertips touch my skin. It's not there. I frantically move my hand up and down my forearm but there's nothing. The skin that is usually slightly raised with the mark, just like a tattoo, is smooth. Where had the mark gone? "Mum! Dad!" I cry out standing up and banging on the wall. I start to cry. Something is wrong, really wrong. How did I get here? Where has my mark gone? "MUM! DAD!" I scream while banging on the wall. Tears are streaming down my cheeks. "Someone help!" I cry out. I slide down to the ground and cry.

The sound of muffled voices stirs me awake. My head snaps up. I stand up and start banging on the wall. "Help me!" I cry out while banging. "Help!". The muffled voices stop. "Please help!" I cry out, begging for someone to rescue me.
"Hello?" calls a muffled male voice from the other side of the wall.
"Please help me, I'm stuck and I don't know where I am!" I call out. There is more muffled talking on the other side of the wall.
"Stand back," orders the man's voice. I back away from the wall until my back is pressed against the opposite wall. "Bombarda maxima!" the male voice calls out clearly. There was an ear-splitting bang and the wall started to crumble. I had to shelter my eyes with my hand due to the dust, debris and sudden light. On the other side of the wall stood a man and a woman. The man is tall with a strong frame and long blonde hair, and the woman is tall and slim with black and blonde hair. These people looked strangely familiar but also like strangers—both of their faces had gone white as if they'd seen a ghost. I stared at them blinking as my eyes adjusted to the light and the dust clears.
"Raven?" asked the woman in a quivering voice. Her voice sounded familiar too. It was uncanny. I looked into her eyes. They were full of emotion that I couldn't quite comprehend. Realisation dawned on the man's face as he could see the confusion in mine.
"Do you not remember us Ravey?" he asked smiling. There was a sort of twinkle in his eyes. I looked at the man and then at the woman and back and forth again. Slowly I started to recognise them. Or at least I thought I did. But they looked older. Much older.
"Uncle Lucius? Aunt Narcissa?" I ask looking at them in confusion. The woman's hand flew to her mouth and she let out a small sob. The man's eyes filled with tears. Narcissa walked up to me and hugged me tightly.
"Thank God you're all right," she whispered, hugging me tightly. I sighed and hugged my aunt back even tighter. Finally, I found someone I am going to be ok.

It had been a week since Raven Lestrange had woken up in that strange dark room. A lot had happened and she was struggling to process it. She had woken up in Riddle Mannor; which now belonged to the Malfoys. Her aunt had taken care of her, bathing her and changing her into warmer clothes, brushing her hair and preparing a warm mug of hot chocolate for her while her uncle Lucius had rapidly owled Bellatrix who had rushed over that very same evening. Raven and Bellatrix had a very emotional reunion followed by her mother telling her about everything that had happened. Raven was now sitting in her room. Well, one of the many spare rooms in Malfoy Manor. She was sitting at her vanity looking at herself in the mirror. She looked the same. She hadn't aged. How had it been 13 years? For 13 years Raven Lestrange had been missing. No one knows how or why she had reappeared or more importantly, how or why she disappeared in the first place. And the scariest part for her is that she felt like she had woken up just like any normal day. And it had been 13 years. To make matters worse, her father was dead. Raven looked at herself in the mirror. She just felt numb. How had all this happened? She sighed, got up from her vanity, and walked to the balcony. The moon was full and bright. It was a warm august evening and the breeze was fresh. Gosh, it felt nice. The grounds looked similar to how she remembered them. She looked around her room. It was a grand room with tall ceilings, fancy wall panelling and wooden floorboards. Not very different to how her room used to be except for the colour. Her room used to be midnight blue but this room was black and white. It was a nice room but you could tell no one used it. There was nothing personalised about it. There was a knock on her door. Raven turned towards the door as it opened and her mother popped her head in.
"Can I come in?" she asked smiling at Raven. Raven smiled back.
"Of course," she replied. Bellatrix walked into the room and shut the door. The two of them sat on the bed. It felt strange.
"How are you feeling, my love?" Bellatrix asked Raven. Raven sighed. She didn't know what to say. Everything felt the same and yet different at the same time.
"I'm ok," she replied with a small smile. Bellatrix smiled back at her. Raven could tell her mother was unsure about what to do. Were things always going to be like this she wondered? "It's so strange that dad is gone" Raven added. Her mother sighed and nodded.
"I thought I had lost both of you in the same night," she replied not being able to look at Raven. Raven reached over and took her mother's hand in hers.
"But I'm back mum and I'm ok," Raven said squeezing her hand. Bellatrix smiled at her.
"I know sweetie, I know." She hugged her daughter tight and Raven hugged back tighter. On October 31st, 1981, her father Tom Riddle, who was known as Lord Voldemort, had gone to Godric's Hollow and was never seen again. That very same night 14-year-old Raven had disappeared from her bed, without a trace. No one knew how or why. Not even Raven. All she knew was that she went to sleep in her bed and woke up in that dark room. And now it was 13 years later, her father was dead and everyone else had aged 13 years; except for her. She rested her chin on her mother's shoulder.
"What's going to happen now?" she asked her mother. Bellatrix looked at her and smiled.
"I don't know my love," she replied, playing with Raven's hair. Raven sighed and looked towards the balcony.
"It doesn't feel like he's gone," Raven mumbled. She couldn't explain it but she had this feeling that she couldn't shake. Bellatrix looked at her daughter.
"What is it, Raven? What do you see?" she asked placing a hand on Raven's shoulder. Raven shook her head.
"I don't know, something feels different," she replied turning to her mother. She smiled sadly. Her mother hadn't aged well she thought. She didn't mean it in a mean way, just that Raven could see the tiredness in her mother's eyes, the grief embedded in her skin.
"Let's put you to bed shall we?" suggested Bellatrix smiling. Raven smiled at her mother. She lay down in bed and Bellatrix tucked her in, brushing her hair out of her face. She sighed. "I can't believe you're back," she mumbled almost to herself. Raven smiled and shut her eyes. "Goodnight my love," said Bellatrix getting up off the bed and walking to the door.
"Goodnight mum," Raven replied while drifting off to sleep.

Raven opened her eyes and found herself standing in a graveyard. 'What is going on now?' she thought to herself. She was next to an old house and felt drawn to it. Stange flashing lights were coming from one of the top windows. She was about to walk over to the house when she heard a noise that made her jump. She quickly hid in a bush. A couple of moments later a boy walked into her vision. He was tall and slim with jet-black hair and glasses. He looked a little scruffy, she noted to herself. He was headed towards the house. Raven watched as the boy disappeared through the front door. Raven stood up and looked at the door that the boy had disappeared behind. She had this strange feeling that she was being watched.
"Hello miss Raven," came a voice from behind her. Raven turned around and saw a massive snake behind her.
"Oh, hello Nagini," she replied smiling. Nagini had been her father's snake, his most prized possession some would argue. She had grown up with Nagini and viewed her as family in some type of way.
"Be careful miss Raven, that boy is not your friend," hissed Nagini. Raven frowned.
"But who is he?" she asked. Nagini just hummed in response.
"Go home miss Raven," she hissed while slithering away. "Open your eyes." Raven frowned.
"What do you mean?" Raven questioned.
"Open your eyes miss Raven!" Nagini called. Raven stood there watching Nagini slither towards the house. She wanted to follow her but didn't dare. "It isn't safe for you here, open your eyes miss Raven," called Nagini. She even stopped and looked at her. Raven felt uneasy. What did she mean open her eyes? All of a sudden it dawned on her. This was a dream. 'Wake up, wake up, wake up she chanted to herself.
