CHAPTER 2: MATTHEO RIDDLE

30 August 1994

Tuesday morning Raven headed down for breakfast shortly after 8. She couldn't seem to shake the uneasy feeling she had. She shrugged it off concluding that it was probably just because she was getting used to all of the changes. She smiled as she entered the dining room and saw Narcissa already table at the table. Next to her was a tall pale boy with blond hair and pale blue eyes. He smiled at her and she smiled back.

"Morning my love," said Narcissa as Raven sat down.

"Good morning," Raven replied smiling. A plate with scrambled eggs on toast and bacon appeared in front of her.

"This is Draco, my son," continued Narcissa, gesturing towards the blond boy. He nodded at Raven smiling.

"Pleasure to finally meet you at an age where I can actually remember it, Raven, I have heard a lot about you," said Draco. Raven smiled.

"You've grown Draco, I remember you as a baby," she replied smiling.

"Draco is 14," continued Narcissa smiling. She then frowned slightly. "The same age as you I supposed," she added. Raven nodded. She was 14. Or at least she had been when she disappeared 13 years ago. However, despite all the time that had past she had stayed the exact same age. It was probably more strange for everyone else than it was for her because she didn't remember the last 13 years.

After breakfast was over Raven got up from the table.

"Why doesn't Draco show you around," offered Narcissa smiling. Draco smiled and stood up.

"Oh, that would be very nice thank you," replied Raven smiling. She and Draco walked out of the dining room.

"Things must seem strange being back," stated Draco looking at her. She looked up at him and smiled.

"In some ways yeah, I don't really feel like time has passed but everything around me has changed," she explained. They walked along the corridor. "Hey, Draco?" Raven started, grinning at him. "Have you ever explored the catacombs?" she asked him. Draco's eyes widened.

"There are catacombs?" he asked astonished. Raven grinned.

"There were when I was around," she replied grabbing his hand. "Come on let's go see if they're still here!" she said giggling. he grinned and the two teenagers ran off laughing.

It was nearly lunchtime and Raven and Draco were walking around the grounds.

"It's so strange how it feels like things have changed from one day to the next," said Raven, kicking an apple across the grass. Draco nodded.

"Yeah, I can't really imagine how you must feel," he replied. Raven grinned.

"Confused is a good place to start," she said. Draco grinned.

"I feel like that's an understatement," he said laughing. All of a sudden Raven had a strange feeling she was being watched. She turned around briskly and was met with the intense stare of a tall boy with dark eyes and dark hair. She frowned. "Hey, Mattheo, why don't you come over here," called Draco. Mattheo. Raven stared as the tall boy walked over. Her mother had told her about him. he was her brother. Mattheo walked over and smiled at her.

"Hello, Raven," he said nodding at her. Raven smiled shyly.

"Hello, Mattheo," she replied. "Last I saw you, you were soon to turn 2, look at you now," she said. Draco laughed.

"Gosh, you two are awkward," he said laughing. Both Mattheo and Raven turned to glare at Draco, which just made him laugh even more. "You two literally make the same faces, it's hilarious," he said. Raven and Mattheo looked at each other and then grinned.

"You're smaller than I thought you would be," he said looking down at her. Raven glared and Draco grinned.

"She's tiny isn't she," added Draco grinning.

"What's that supposed to mean?" she asked scowling. "Were you expecting me to be 6 foot 8 with horns?" This made the two boys laugh.

"Maybe not the 6 foot 8," started Draco grinning.

"But the horns definitely," finished Mattheo grinning widely.

"You two are the worst!" Raven huffed but couldn't help but laugh. The three of them talked and walked around the grounds.

"We should head back for lunch," stated Mattheo. The other two nodded. All three of them headed back to the dining room.

"How are you feeling Raven?" Lucius asked her as they sat down. Raven smiled.

"I'm ok, thank you," she replied. Draco grinned. They all ate their lunch and talked. Near the end of the meal, Raven remembered something.

"Where's Nagini?" she asked turning to her mother. Bellatrix froze for a moment. Raven looked over at Narcissa and Lucius, who exchanged a nervous glance.

"She left, love," Bellatrix said and smiled at her daughter. Raven frowned.

"When?" she asked. Lucius coughed.

"Towards the beginning of the summer," Narcissa replied smiling. Raven nodded.

"I had a dream about her last night," Raven admitted. Lucius smiled.

"I know you cared about Nagini," he said, reaching over the table and patting her hand. Raven smiled.

"That's ok," she said. Raven turned to look at Mattheo. He looked deep in thought. Raven frowned to herself but shook her head and went back to eating. After lunch, Raven, Narcissa and Bellatrix went to Raven's old room. It was exactly the same as it had been 13 years before.

"Let's see what clothes you have to figure out what we need to buy," said Narcissa smiling. Raven smiled. The three women spent the afternoon looking through Raven's closet and making a list of clothes she could want and need.

"Do you feel ready to go back to Hogwarts, dear?" Bellatrix asked Raven. Raven looked at her mother.

"Yes," she replied smiling. She paused for a moment. "Will I be with Draco and Mattheo?" she asked feeling slightly nervous. Narcissa nodded.

"Yes love," Bellatrix replied.

"I contacted Dumbledore and he said he would be more than happy to welcome you back," Narcissa added. "However you will have to be sorted again," she added. Raven smiled and nodded. They finished putting away the rest of her clothes.

"At what time will we be going to Diagon Alley tomorrow?" Raven asked smiling at her mother. Bellatrix smiled back.

"You'll be going with your aunt and Draco and Mattheo tomorrow morning," she explained. Raven nodded.

"Also, Regulus is coming over for dinner," added Narcissa. Raven's face lit up.

"Really?" she asked beaming. Bellatrix grinned and Narcissa nodded.

"Raven!" called Regulus beaming. Raven ran up to Regulus and jumped into his arms. He twirled her around and she laughed. "I've missed you," he said hugging her tightly. She hugged him back.

"Well it has been 13 years," she said laughing. He put her down. "Look at you all grown up," she taunted grinning. He grinned back at her.

"Well you are the youngest-looking 27-year-old I have ever seen," he taunted back grinning. She rolled her eyes. Everyone headed to the dining room and had a luxurious dinner together laughing and talking late into the night. Raven headed back to her room. She felt really sleepy. She quickly got changed into her nightdress and washed her face, brushed her teeth and brushed her hair. She plated her hair into two french air was warm. Raven opened her balcony to let in the cool night air. There was a knock on the door. Raven quickly made her way to her door and opened it.

"Reggie, what are you doing out here," she whispered grinning. He grinned back at her.

"Let me in will you," he said chuckling. She stepped back and let him into her room. He hurried in and shut the door. Raven looked at Regulus and the man he had become. He had a much stronger frame now. His hair wasn't as long and was pushed up out of his face. He turned to look at her, eyes shining just like they always had, and a gin crept up on his face, the same grin that he used to give her before they did something they weren't supposed to. "Want to do something fun?" he asked her. She rolled her eyes at him and grinned. The next thing she knew they were running across the grounds towards the lake. They took off their clothes and jumped into the lake whooping and laughing. "Good thing you still know how to swim," he teased. Raven stuck her tongue out at him.

"Of course, I remember how to swim," she retorted. "You were the one that struggled to learn," she teased. Regulus huffed.

"Only because I was older than you so I was heavier," he retorted. They both laughed.

"I see you've finally grown a beard," she said grinning at him. regulus gasped and pretended to be shocked.

"I don't know what you mean, I was born with this beard," he retorted. Raven laughed hard at that remark. They had fun jumping into the lake and splashing each other. When they got tired of swimming they got out of the lake and lay down on the bank. "Clear night tonight," he noted. Raven looked up at the sky. It was true, there wasn't a cloud in sight. The moon was only a sliver of light but it was bright, illuminating the sky. Raven pointed at a cluster of stars.

"That's the Leo constellation isn't it," said Raven. Regulus nodded.

"And that one is my star," he replied grinning.

"And that one is Sirius' star," she added pointing at another star. Regulus nodded.

"You don't get a star because you're boring," teased Regulus, turning on his side to look at her. Raven rolled her eyes at him. They laughed and looked back at the sky. Pointing at different constellations and talking about anything and everything, the two old friends spoke for a long time. At around 2 am Raven and Regulus got up and headed back to the Manor. They crept back to Raven's room and shut the door quickly, chuckling.

"That was really fun Reggie," said Raven smiling at him. He smiled back at her.

"I had to welcome you home one way or another," he replied grinning. "Besides what better way to do that than drag you back into our rule-breaking ways," he added grinning. She grinned back at him.

"Will you be staying until I leave for Hogwarts?" she asked hopefully. He nodded.

"Yes I am, I'll even see you off at King's Cross," he replied. She grinned at him and then yawned. Regulus chuckled. "All right off to bed you, you're tired," he teased. She rolled her eyes at him but she was tired. He hugged her tight and then crept out of her room. Raven climbed into bed grinning to herself. She fell asleep as soon as her head touched her pillow.

Narcissa and Raven had spent all morning walking up and down Diagon Alley buying new clothes and shoes for Raven. They also bought her new sets of robes and all the books and stationery she would need for her fourth year at Hogwarts. Raven was a little nervous about going back to Hogwarts. She used to have a very close friend group but that was 13 years ago. Now she would be going back with only her brother and her cousin as companions. Not to mention she had to get sorted again. Raven sighed at the thought. She was a Slytherin, why did she have to be sorted again?

"Raven, darling, do you want to come to the salon with me?" Narcissa asked. Raven grinned.

"Yes please," she replied. Raven loved getting her hair done. She loved the feeling of her long luscious hair being styled beautifully. After getting their hair done, Narciss and Raven joined Draco and Mattheo at Quality Quidditch Supplies.

"Do you boys need any new Quidditch gear?" Narcissa asked. Mattheo and Draco nodded. She bought the two boys the equipment they needed and then the four of them left the shop. "I have an appointment, why don't you three go get a bite to eat and then I'll meet up with you when it's time to leave?" she offered. Raven, Draco and Mattheo nodded and grinned. She gave the three of them money and off she went to her appointment.

"Where would you like to go eat?" Mattheo asked Raven. She shrugged.

"I don't know what's still around this many years later," she admitted. Draco and Mattheo ended up bringing Raven to a small Italian place where the three of them shared two margarita pizzas and had a butter beer each. They then wander et around Diagon Alley looking in shop windows and talking.

"Who knew having a younger sister could be fun," joked Mattheo. Raven glared at him.

"I'm older than you," she retorted. "In fact, I'm older than both of you." Draco and Mattheo chuckled.

"You technically aren't anymore," replied Draco grinning.

"You'll probably be the youngest in our year," added Mattheo grinning wickedly. Raven's jaw dropped. She had been the youngest in her year 13 years ago but she had never thought about how she would be considered younger than some people born 13 years after her. Raven's scowl deepened making Mattheo and Draco hoot with laughter.

"It's ok I'll protect you from all the mean mean older people," teased Mattheo putting an arm around her.

"Oh bug off," she huffed in response pushing his arm off her shoulder, but she couldn't help but grin with the other two. They met back up with Narcissa and headed home. Once home Draco left Raven and Mattheo to go see his father.

"Your room overlooks the grounds doesn't it?" Mattheo asked as they walked around the Manor. Raven nodded.

"Yes it does," she replied. Mattheo grinned. Raven looked at him and frowned. "What?" she asked him.

"My room is next to yours," he replied. "Do anything fun last night after dinner?" he asked. Raven gaped at him.

"Were you spying on me?" she asked. Mattheo laughed.

"You're not very discreet when sneaking out," he teased. Raven scowled.

"I thought I was the only one on this floor," she confessed. Mattheo shook his head.

"I was the only one on this floor until you came along," he replied grinning. Raven rolled her eyes at him.

"I was here first remember," she retorted. Mattheo grinned. "Want to go to the catacombs?" she asked him. He stared at her shocked.

"You know about the catacombs?" he asked astonished. Raven grinned.

"I invented the catacombs," she replied grinning. The two of them ran off to the catacombs laughing loudly. They wandered around the catacombs admiring them.

"I love it here, it's so peaceful," admitted Mattheo. Raven smiled.

"I have so many memories here," she said with a finger absentmindedly tracing the walls. "I'd come down here with my dad all the time," she added smiling to herself. Mattheo stopped and looked at her.

"What was he like?" he asked. She looked at him and smiled sadly.

"He was amazing," she replied. "He always made time for me and wanted the best for me," she added. Mattheo smiled sadly.

"I don't remember him, it's as if I never met him," he replied quietly.

"You remind me of him," Raven said smiling. Mattheo smiled back at her. "He loved you a lot. He was already so proud of you," she added. Mattheo looked away from her. "It's so strange," she continued, walking around. "I remember at all as if it were yesterday. Mum, dad, me and you as a baby. We were happy."

"It wasn't so happy after you and dad disappeared," he replied shrugging. "Mum went to trial but was freed mainly because I was around and she was in distress because you had vanished. Since then the world looks at us as if we bring death and pain everywhere we go," he said. Raven frowned.

"Was he really that bad?" she asked. Mattheo smiled sadly.

"You should hear the things people say about him. And about me now," he said. Raven stared at him in shock.

"About you too?" she asked. He nodded.

"Why do you think everyone wants you to go back to Hogwarts as a Black and not a Riddle?" he asked chuckling. Raven hadn't really thought about it. The two of them walked around in silence for a couple of minutes. "That dream you had with Nagini," started Mattheo, making Raven turn to look at him. "I had a dream with you and her in it that night too," he said. Raven frowned.

"It felt like a warning," she admitted. "Nagini spoke to me and-"

"Nagini spoke to you?" Mattheo asked. Raven nodded. "You speak parseltongue?" he asked.

"Yes, don't you?" Raven asked. He nodded.

"But you mustn't talk about it, it's not well seen anymore," he explained. Raven stared at him.

"What about being a descendant of Salazar Slytherin himself?" she asked. Mattheo shook his head. "And being a pureblood?" He shook his head again. Raven was astounded. Everything her father had stood for, pureblood supremacy and their heritage, all of that meant nothing now.

"Like we've been telling you, a lot has changed in the last 13 years," Mattheo said quietly. Raven looked at him. She couldn't believe what she was hearing.
