CHAPTER 3: RETURNING TO HOGWARTS

1 September 1994

Raven woke up early on September 1st. The sun was streaming in through the open balcony. She had butterflies in her stomach. "Was she always this nervous?" she wondered. The answer was no she wasn't. This start of the school year was just different. She was going back to the same school and it felt like she'd never left it, but 13 years had passed. She wondered how different it would be. Raven got up and got dressed. She put on a black dress with black heels and added a bow to her hair. She made her bed and went into her bathroom. She quickly did her make-up; concealer, blush, highlighter, winged eyeliner, mascara, lip liner and lip balm. She spritzed herself with her favourite rose-scented perfume and then put her toiletries into her travel bag. She then place it into her open trunk and headed down for breakfast.

"Good morning," she said merrily while she sat down next to Draco.

"Morning," said Draco.

"Morning, Raven," said Lucius while pouring her a glass of orange juice.

"Are you all packed?" Bellatrix asked, smiling at her daughter. Raven nodded.

"Yes I am," she replied.

"Me too," added Mattheo.

"Same," added Draco. Bellatrix smiled.

"Perfect. I sadly won't be able to accompany you to the station but Lucius will be bringing you all," she said. All of a sudden Raven felt a searing pain in her left arm and hissed at the pain.

"Are you alright sweetheart?" Narcissa asked Raven. Raven looked up at her aunt's confused look. She quickly scanned the room. Everyone was watching her. However, out of the corner of her eye, she could see Mattheo trying to mask his face from what looked like pain. Raven smiled at her aunt.

"Yes I just hit my funny bone," she replied, making a point of rubbing her elbow. Narcissa at her niece. After breakfast, Draco, Mattheo and Raven headed to their rooms. Just before Mattheo was about to shut his door Raven wedged her foot in to stop him. "You felt it too didn't you?" she asked. Mattheo pursed his lips.

"Yes, I've felt it all summer," he replied shortly. Raven frowned.

"And no one else-"

"No, no one else has felt it. It's probably nothing," he said cutting Raven off. "I have to make sure I've packed everything," and with that, he shut the door. That's strange, Raven thought to herself.

At 10 o'clock Raven was in the hall with Draco and Mattheo and all of their trunks and bags. There was a knock at the door. Draco opened it and there stood Regulus. Raven grinned.

"Hi Reggie," she said grinning.

"Hello you," he replied, hugging her. "Come on, let's pack all of your bags into the limo," he said. And before she knew it they were off to King's Cross Station. Lucius, Regulus, Draco, Mattheo and Raven headed off to platform 9 and ¾. When they got there Lucius helped load the trunks onto the train as Draco and Mattheo went to say hello to all of their friends. Raven stood next to Regulus feeling nervous.

"I don't know if this was a good idea," she said quietly. Regulus squeezed Raven's arm.

"Don't get cold feet now, you're the brightest witch of your age, you'll do great," he reassured her grinning. She smiled up at him. "Which reminds me," he said while fishing something out of his cloak. "I have a little something for you." He handed her a little bag.

"Oh, Reggie you shouldn't have," Raven said smiling at him and blushing a little. She took the bag and opened it. There was a letter and two wrapped objects.

"Read the letter later I want to see your reaction to the other things first," he said grinning. Hermione took the first present, a small roundish parcel. She opened it and inside there was a beautiful silver necklace with the initials 'RB' on them.

"Regulus Black?" she asked him. He grinned.

"It used to be, but don't forget you're Raven Black now," he said nudging her. She grinned.

"Yes, I know," she replied rolling her eyes. Regulus helped her put the necklace on.

"Now open the other one," he said. Raven giggle and took the other long and thin parcel. She unwrapped it and gasped.

"My wand!" she exclaimed, utterly delighted. It was her precision wand, black ebony, 12 inches, ridged, with two intertwined unicorn hairs as its core. She thought she had lost it. "Oh thank you, Reggie," she exclaimed swinging her arms around his neck. Regulus laughed and swung her around.

"You're more than welcome," he said grinning. Raven couldn't take her eyes off her wand. The train whistle blew. "Now off you go Raven, you don't want to miss the train," treaded Regulus. Raven stuck her tongue out at him.

"I'll see you at Christmas," she called, running off to the train.

"I'll write to you!" Regulus called back after her. She waved at him one final time and got onto the train. As the train started to move she went to find Draco and Mattheo.

"Took you long enough," teased Draco, moving over so that Raven could sit next to him.

"We thought you'd missed the train," taunted Mattheo. Raven rolled her eyes at the two boys.

"Look at my wand," she said smugly. Mattheo stared at it in envy.

"Is this the wand mother kept going on about?" he asked. Raven nodded.

"2 unicorn hairs as its core and all," she said grinning. Draco and Mattheo looked envious.

"I don't see why I couldn't have taken your wand," muttered Mattheo. Raven stuck her tongue out at him.

"Because the wand chooses the wizard remember," she replied teasingly. Mattheo rolled her eyes at her. The train ride was pretty peaceful. Draco, Mattheo and Raven talked and laughed the whole journey and even shared some berty bots every flavoured beans, which was exceptionally funny when Draco ate a chilli-flavoured one and had to rapidly spit it out. The sky started to darken outside the train.

"How are you feeling Raven?" Mattheo asked looking at her. Raven shrugged.

"Nervous, but other than that I'm fine," she replied smiling. Draco smiled at her.

"Don't worry, our friends will protect you," he replied. Raven frowned.

"But I will be introduced as a Black, not a Riddle, why would I need protecting?" Raven asked. Mattheo chuckled.

"He's just teasing you, you'll be fine," reassured Mattheo. Raven smiled nervously. "On a more serious note, the Black family isn't very popular at the moment either," Mattheo confessed. Draco grinned.

"Most pureblood names aren't very popular at the moment, we're too good for the majority," said Draco winking at her. Raven chuckled.

"This is going to be a fun year," she said rolling her eyes. Mattheo and Draco grinned.

"What was it like when you were there?" Mattheo asked. Raven's eyes lit up.

"It was amazing," she started smiling. "The purebloods and old wizarding families were respected and admired. We were all close because we understood each other," Raven said. Draco looked at her enviously.

"That sounds like the dream," said Draco. Raven grinned at him.

"There must still be people that believe in blood supremacy," she said. Draco nodded.

"Yes, our friend group is people that think just like us," replied Draco. Mattheo grinned.

"You'll fit in just fine, just make sure not to make it too obvious that you believe purebloods are better," he said grinning.

"The staff has gone soft," explained Draco. Raven rolled her eyes. They all laughed.

"So, apart from saying I'm a Black and not explaining my heritage, anything else I need to know?" Raven asked. Mattheo raised an eyebrow.

"You'll probably be asked to stay away from Potter like Mattheo," mocked Draco. Mattheo grinned. raven looked confused.

"You know, Harry Potter, 'the boy who lived'," explained Draco. Raven rolled her eyes.

"Please, I could squash that boy like a bug," she said mockingly. Mattheo grinned.

"I just know you will be told to stay away from Potter after all the professors know our bloodline," said Mattheo. Raven laughed. They spent the rest of the train ride talking and laughing. The train finally slowed and stopped at the station.

"Come on Raven, I'm starving," said Draco grinning. They all grabbed their bags and headed towards the castle. Raven couldn't help but feel nervous and excited at the foot of the stairs. Hogwarts was a majestic place.

"Miss Black," came a voice from being her. There stood a tall man with long dark hair.

"Hello, Professor Snape," said Draco. Mattheo grinned.

"Hello you two," said Professor Snape looking at Draco and Mattheo and nodding. "I am sorry but I have to borrow your, relative, for just a moment," he said. Draco and Mattheo nodded.

"See you in a moment," said Mattheo squeezing Raven's shoulder. Raven watched the two boys walk off.

"Come with me miss Black, you are about to be sorted," said Professor Snape. Raven took a deep breath and followed Professor Snape. In the Great Hall, Professor Dumbledore's voice could be heard loud and clear as he started his speech.

"One more thing before we enjoy our feast, we have a new student joining us in fourth year and will now be sorted," said Professor Dumbledore. Murmuring filled the room. Raven took a deep breath. "Please welcome your new classmate, Miss Black." Everyone turned and watched as Raven and Professor Snape walked through the doors and up to the front. Raven sat on the stool and Professor McGonagall placed the Sorting Hat on Raven's head.

"Ah now this is a head I know" mumbled the hat in Raven's head. "I see intelligence and cunningness, ambitious and resourcefulness but also patience and wit" continued the Sorting Hat. Raven relaxed a little. "I see no point in changing the original choice I made. So it better be…Slytherin!"
