Firefly

By Kim

It was twilight, the limbs of the surrounding trees black lines etched against the purple of the sky as the sun slunk beneath the horizon. In a small pond in the forest behind the safe house, bullfrogs started their evening croaking, in search of mates, as the first slivers of moonlight danced across the still water. Crickets began to chirp, and the soft coo of a nearby owl was heard as it started its nightly hunt.

Trowa sighed. Nothing disturbed the perfect serene landscape. Nothing until a certain braided boy burst from the trees, a look of determination on his pretty face. He leaned forward from the tree he had been resting against, wondering what in the hell Duo was doing.

A small spot of light appeared hovering in the air, and it quickly became apparent as to what Duo's purpose in the woods was. He raced towards the light, ready to pounce. But just as soon it came, it was gone, leaving Duo empty handed and scowling, until another light appeared, calling his attenion.

Duo was trying to catch fireflies.

And failing miserably, Trowa noted to himself. He almost allowed a small smile to creep onto his face as the violet eyed boy jumped after another speck of light, a look of glee on his expressive face as he held up his hands to his face, and opened them. The corners of his mouth twitched upwards as Duo started cursing, his opened palms revealing nothing. Almost silently, Trowa rose and walked over to the other boy.

He laid a hand on Duo's shoulder, and the other boy jumped at the touch, a startled yelp spilling from his mouth as he turned around.

"Shhhh," Trowa almost inaudibly said, lightly laying a finger on Duo's lips to keep him quiet. Violet eyes widened at the unexpected touch, and too quickly that slender finger was pulled away, it's passage softly rubbing against a chapped bottom lip.

Trowa pulled his eyes away from Duo and looked around the little clearing. Seeing a light pop up into the now almost darkness, he motioned for Duo to follow him, and he slowly approached the little flying bug. Extending his arm, Trowa stood absolutely still, and much to Duo's surprise, after a few moments, the firefly alighted on the outstretched hand, the light on it's back blinking in and out.

Drawing his arm in slowly, he once again turned to Duo, holding the firefly in cupped hands. Duo leaned forward, peering into Trowa's hands.

"Don't move." He moved his hands apart, forcing the firefly to take to the air and look for a new perch. It landed on Duo's nose, and as Duo crossed his eyes in an effort to look, Trowa finally did smile. The bug grew tired of Duo's nose, and flew off into the night, leaving a trail of pale yellow dots in the night sky in it's wake.

Trowa was still smiling as Duo stopped staring off at the retreating firefly and turned to him. Quick as a flash, Duo pressed his lips to Trowa's cheek, and was gone into the full fledged night.

Trowa stood shocked, a hand touching the kissed cheek in disbelief. All around him, flashes of yellow lit up the surrounding darkness as the fireflies danced, finding their partners. While the clearing had earlier seemed peaceful, the sedate noise of it's nightime inhabitants soothing, Trowa now found the dark stillness to be stifling and he headed back to the safe house. There he knew Duo would be waiting, ready and able to fill up the darkness with his own special brand of light.
