"Faith?" I knock on her bedroom door and enter, closing it behind me and sitting on her desk chair. She's lying on her bed, throwing pieces of paper into the garbage can.

"Faith, you know we try not to waste anything here."
"I know."

"So?"

"I didn't say I cared."

I sighed and moved over to the bed. Sitting next to her, I'm pretty sure I saw her eyes smile. As hard as she tries, she can't fool us. She doesn't want to be alone any more than I do.

"You know why we were paired together."

"I don't know much of anything."

"That is not true. You've been up here three months. You've learned--"

"I don't know anything up here that I didn't know down here." she threw another piece of paper at the basket and snorted when it hit the rim and flew out.

"That's not true." I turned her face so that she had to look me in the eye.

"We lost our chance at childhood, at happiness, at freedom. That was our destiny. We accepted our fate and lost the battle in the end, but God knows we've learned from it. That's why we're here!"

"I haven't learned anything."

"Yes you have."

"Name one thing we've learned." she rolled her eyes.

I responded by showing her my wings.

"Show off." she gave me the finger. "I wish I had a cigarette."

"You don't smoke."

"I'll learn." she shrugged.

"Faith. You can't dwell on the past. It hurt and it was a terrible thing but it's over. We have a new destiny to fulfill now. And this one is much, much more important than the first."

"What might that be?"

I waved my hand and showed her what was going on in Sunnydale. Buffy was dancing at the Bronze with her friends.

"The Bronze is our new destiny?" she asked. She actually smiled when she said that. Freaky.

"No. Watching over Buffy is."

Faith didn't say anything. After awhile of sitting in silence, I went back to my own room and decided she needed an angel of her own.
