The sound of the ferry hugging the current lulled their morning ears into a tranquil feeling. They watched the fresh sun peak above the horizon painting the windows of every skyscraper blueish gold. The breeze was refreshing and warm against their skin as they stood on the deck. You couldn't help but close your eyes to let it roll over your face and through your hair.
An anonymous legitamit threat of releasing a virus into the New York Stock Exchange made a nervous Homeland send in Scorpion to stand by just in case. Their hotel wasn't but a few blocks from the exchange as they soon piled off the boat headed for downtown Manhattan.
Of course Toby made a few comments on his hometown, but many less than they'd expected.
"I'm sure it's just a brisk walk.", said an anxious Sylvester.
"Oh come on it's just a cab ride Sly!", said an annoyed Walter gesturing to the waiting yellow vehicle.
"Yes with a cocktail of germs and bacteria from all over the city!", he responded.
"Sly come on you can take a shower right when we get to the hotel and you have hand sanitizer and wipes.", said Paige sweetly.
"Stop being a wimp and get in.", said Happy.
"Oh boy I need a coffee.", added Cabe.
Meanwhile Toby looked across the street at somewhere familiar. It was a sports bar he remembered waiting outside of as a kid. The intersection next to them turned as people flooded through the crosswalk. Only a few of them walked down their street as the impatient cab driver pulled away.
There were a few angry words tossed from the team next to him but Tobys eyes landed on a man about to walk passed them. He was slightly hunched over muttering silent words to himself with a look of worry on his face.
"Dad?", he said stopping the man. Toby's face read of worried disbelief.
"Do you know which way Barkers street is I-I have to get home but I don't remember...", started the scared man clearly not hearing or understanding Toby's words.
Toby put his hand on his shoulder as quiet tears welled in his eyes.
"Don't worry I'll help you. Don't worry.", he said kindly but shaken.
The group looked at the scene speechless as Toby waved down a cab never letting go of the fragile man.
Tears fell from Toby's eyes, he acted like he was unaware of them.
The group piled into the vehicle as Toby gave directions to the driver.
"I don't know pal that's not the best neighborhood, you sure?", he asked.
"Yes I'm sure.", said Toby in response.
The drive was silent as they arrived on the street previously spoken. Toby told the driver to stop as he told him to wait.
The house was gray with faded white trim. The windows were depressed and hazy. It's walls were unstable and unkept.
"How did you know where I lived?", asked the man slightly missing Toby's eyes.
Toby thought for a moment on what to say. "Its Toby...remember me I'm I'm your s-son. I've been away for awhile.".
The man just cocked his head slightly as he nervously fidgeted.
"Th-thank you for helping me.", said the man as he walked up the drive way. Toby's unheard words were left behind in the broken driveway as they all watched the man go inside.
They all had a million questions. They thought it was just his mother that had mental illnesses. Was he going to follow the man inside, how could he leave?
"I have someone I know to call, they'll make sure everything is...", Toby didn't finish his sentence as he stared at the ground. "I just can't go in there again I just...", leaving another sentence unfinished.
The teams uncharacteristic silence continued as they once again piled into the cab. No words that came to their minds seemed right.
The night came quickly as Scorpion slept on uneasy minds. Happy was yet to fall asleep as she walked down the hall with takeout in hand for two. Toby barely said anything all day and if it werent for the abnormal quiet from the usually talkative behaviorist, he seemed otherwise fine.
Her key slid into the slot as she twisted the fancy handle of the nice manhattan hotel room.
Firelight lit up Tobys slouching frame that sat away from her on the bed.
"I didn't know if you wanted coffee or tea so I got both.", she said walking in.
He turned toward her as she stopped in her tracks.
Tears streamed endlessly out of weary red eyes painting tired pupils. He just looked at her with desperation.
She quickly put the food on the table as she sat next to him on the bed wrapping her arms around his neck. Her hand cradled the back of his head, the other on his back as she looked over his shoulder closing her eyes focusing on transfering her warmth.
His hand shakily found her forearm under his chin as his uneven breathing was yet to steady.
