The wind ruffled the copper colored locks of a young girl sitting on the edge of a wide plateau. All around her, marred oak trees waved their dying leaves. Her legs swung back and forth as she stared out over the landscape. She pulled her pale pink windbreaker closer as a stark wind rose from the forest of trees behind her. In the girl's hands were two notes written on lined paper.
Carefully, she unfolded the one on top. The girl read the nervous handwriting and smiled at the childishness of the lettering.
"Dear Hikari,
I know how stupid this may seem. Yeah, a note from a guy. Do you feel like we're back in third grade or something? Well, I do. But there's a purpose behind this note. It might be a little obvious to you. I think Takeru knows.
I like you.
Out of all the girls I've met, you have to be the most glamorous to me. Maybe it's the way you look at me. Whatever it is it makes my stomach flutter every time your crimson eyes meet my own. Butterflies, that's what they are. I want to fly away with you.
Lovingly,
Daisuke"
Hikari folded up the letter and looked across the hilly grasslands before her. The sun danced through the leaves of the trees behind her, making gold and black shadows on the ground around her. Hikari wondered if ever she could chose between Daisuke and Takeru. Both were special in their own separate ways. She placed Daisuke's note on the dirt and carefully moved a small rock on top of it.
"My dearest Hikari,
That name. It brings shivers to my spine. When I yell it, it's almost like bells are ringing. When I say it softly, it sounds like praying. Oh sweetest Hikari. You already know what I am going to say. Do I even have to write it down?
I love our special connection. The way we click together. You don't have to say a word and a million thoughts are racing between us. Yet when you speak, it is a melody to my ear. I could listen to your voice forever. The voice of an angel.
Please Hikari, be my angel. Angel of Light. For like your name, you fill my heart with light and joy. Without you, I would surely perish like a fish out of water. Hikari...Hikari...light of my life.
Takeru"
Hikari sat, unbelieving. Takeru said he loved her, indirectly. The both of them, competing for her love. Did she really have to choose? Daisuke, lovable goofy boy. Takeru, her soul mate and best friend.
Suddenly, the oak trees behind her shuddered, and golden leaves flew everywhere. A shower of leaves circled their way around Hikari. She grinned and slowly tore both notes up slowly with her soft hands. The oak leaves blew in around her as she slowly let the wind take the paper from her hands. The notes swirled in front of her, and became one with the leaves.
Hikari watched as the paper scattered all over the countryside. A single leaf landed in her open hand. It seemed to be scarred on one side. Holding it up to the sun behind to have a closer look, she noticed that a sun on top of a mountain had been emblazed into the golden leaf. A knowing expression came to her face as she turned back to the edge of the cliff. Opening her hand, Hikari let the leaf float to a destination unknown.
