Dolphins

I love the ocean, but I worship the dolphins.

Because I grew up inland, I never saw them before a vacation on the beach. They were peaceful, serene. Most importantly, they were a reminder of the peaceful spirit of a child.

Now that I have experienced motherhood, I understand why. Frances is a wonderful child, always playful, always content, and being with her soothes me, comforts me. Harry is a great father and a wonderful husband, even though he's rarely around. We are spending another summer at the American shore, so that I can spend this time with my unborn second child in the warmth of near and familiar waters.

Frances is six now, Nathaniel is three. We have made it a tradition to spend a month of each year at the beach. Both children love the water, and love the time we spend with them in it. Both are content playing in the sand while Harry and I rest.

The sand was not enough to keep them both occupied. Before I knew it, Nathaniel was in the water. I was oblivious, as I was asleep. It was my largest mistake. Thanks God Frances kept to the sand. I could not stand to lose them both.

We flew back to England to bury Nathaniel. We bought the old house Harry's grandparents had lived in years before, and buried our son in the family graveyard. Frances did not understand why we put Nathaniel in the ground. Even I had to admit that this process made it more final. I wept for Nathaniel as I had never wept in my life.

We still go back to that shore, where the dolphins frolic, but we make sure to keep tight reins on Frances. I regret having to restrain her so, because now she will be unable to play and be free just like the dolphins I adore so much.
