It's The End
by: JediPrincess
I get another ficcy! From the book Armageddon Summer by Jane Yolen and Bruce Coville. A different end of the book. Told from Marina's POV.
I searched around frantically. I couldn't find Jed. I looked up at the sky, and saw small hailstones fire spurt from the air. The world was ending.
If only those Angels would have stayed at their posts and guarded the gate, I thought wildly. My thoughts became even more feverish as I felt a sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach. God wouldn't save me now. I wasn't a true Believer. I struggled to get out of the mass chaos of bodies and up to the mountain cave Jed and I had found.
Then I saw him. Jed, with his rattail and all. I ran, weaving through several people praying, bodies thrown on the ground, to him. "Jed!" I cried, breathlessly. He saw me and gave a faint smile. "Come on, let's go!" he yelled over the wails, grasping my hand in his.
We began to run. Away from the chaos of the camp, but we knew not away from the End of the Earth. The mountain shook as fire erupted at its base, sending a conflagration through the lower trees. Before long, I knew this would all be engulfed in the hellish fire.
Still, we raced up the trail, not looking at each other, not looking behind. The flames were not close to us yet, but I knew, and he knew, it was only a matter of time. I tripped over a tree root and fell, scraping my hands and knees against the rough earth. Jed tried to pull me up, but I refused. "It's no use," I sobbed, tears flowing freely from my eyes.
"You don't want to die like this Marina. Just get up!" Jed pulled on my arm, and I stood. "We've got to make it to the cave!" he whispered urgently.
And then I saw the welcoming darkness of the tiny cavern where Jed had used his laptop on that starry night so long ago. It wasn't that long ago, was it? Your brain seems twisted when the world's ending.
We climbed into the protection of the damp cave, and sat down, next to each other. We knew this was the end. I looked over to Jed, and saw tears dripping down Jed's face. I pressed my cheek against his, and he held me close. "The world's not fair Marina."
He pulled my chin up, and looked straight into my eyes. And before I knew it, he kissed me. On the lips. My first real kiss. It came to an abrupt end when the brush outside the cave caught on fire. Smoke slowly seeped into our haven, making it hard to breathe. Jed held me close, and we rocked back and forth. This was the end. There was no stopping it. As the fire engulfed the two of us, there was only one thought left in my mind- Jed.
