If Pit was surprised by the return of the Smash tournament in 2014, then he was astonished that there was yet another in 2018. Even more impressive than that was that every character who had ever taken part would be brought back. Pit was filled with mixed emotions. On the one hand, he was happy he'd get to see Wolf and the Ice Climbers again. On the other hand, he wasn't so happy about seeing Snake. He and Snake didn't exactly get off to a good start when they first met. But if there was one thing that Pit was very excited for, it was the return of Rosalina. He'd been dreaming of the day they would meet again. While he had little to do but think about her for four years, she had multiple new adventures and experiences. He knew she would be excited to tell him about them and he was equally eager to hear about them.
Unlike the last couple of tournaments, where everyone slowly arrived over a year or two, nearly everyone showed up at the same time. There were only about 7 people who hadn't shown up yet (not including late participants, such as Piranha Plant). Pit was excited to get to see everyone again. Even though he'd have to deal with Snake again, his return allowed for Simon Belmont to join, someone whom Pit had heard about but had never met (though a fictional telling of him and Mega Man meeting Simon had been created). He and Simon became fast friends, with Palutena also taking a shine to Simon. Isabelle, whom had joined as an Assist Trophy before, had ascended to a full fighter, borrowing a few moves from Villager. Same happened with Dark Samus, albeit with all of her moves copied. Other villains, such as King K. Rool and Ridley, joined, as did Ken, Chrom, and Daisy, each of them being one of these "Echo Fighters" as the moveset clones were being called. Even Simon had an Echo Fighter in the form of his descendant, Richter Belmont. With so many new fighters joining, Pit was eager to see who he and Rosalina would befriend and what fun adventures they would go on.
Galeem killed everyone.
Some being of light known only as Galeem threatened every fighter. He released hundreds of Master Hand clones which floated above everyone. Everyone had confidence in their ability to defeat them, even if they had to fight about ten each as Marth predicted. When the Master Hands disintegrated into beams of light, everyone tried to fight them off. That was until the fighters got vaporized by the light.
When it became obvious that Galeem's beams of light could not be stopped, everyone tried to outrun them. Some, such as Captain Falcon and Team StarFox, tried using their vehicles to escape. Sonic and Pikachu tried to run away. Palutena stayed behind to keep Pit and Dark Pit aloft with her Power of Flight. Pit could tell when she was vaporized by Galeem when he and Dark Pit began falling as they no longer had the Power of Flight. Only two thoughts went through Pit's mind as he fell: he had lost Lady Palutena and he was afraid Rosalina would be lost, too. He caught a glimpse of her. She was trying to evade the beams, too, with Diddy Kong next to her, but the beams were catching up to them as well. Pit didn't have much time to be concerned for her, as he and Dark Pit were vaporized seconds later.
Pit could feel his mind inside his body, trapped and unable to control anything. He could feel something coating his body. Some kind of fluid poured over his figure and ran off. If his eyes could open, he'd be able to see what was happening to himself. He had no idea where he was, if he was even alive, or what was happening. He tried to keep his trapped mind occupied by recounting trivia about Mario games, but that could only distract him from the bleakness of his situation for so long. As far as he knew, all of those people he remembered, especially his beloved Rosalina, were in the same limbo he was trapped in.
After an uncertain amount of time had passed, anything ranging from an hour to a month, Pit saw his eyelids open. He realized this meant he was still not in control of his body. If he were, he would have opened his eyes on his own. His arms and legs began moving freely, but not under his control. It was as if some force had taken control of his body and was forcing him to move. He recognized where he was as Skyworld. He could also see Simon in front of him. He tried to say something, but his mouth remained close no matter how much he tried to yell something to get Simon's attention. Not that Simon's attention was divided; Simon was fully intent on fighting Pit, or at least Pit's body. Pit knew he didn't want to hurt Simon, but he also didn't want Simon to hurt him. Not that he had any control over the situation. Pit could feel every hit of Simon's whip and axes as they hit his angelic body. When Simon had racked up enough damage, he flung Pit's body into the void.
The reset caused by being KO'd was refreshing, as it restored damage caused during the battle. This time, it restored in a different way. Pit could feel the barrier between his body and mind breaking. He could feel the control in his hands and feet once again. He could feel the ability to open his eyes again, which felt like the easiest thing to try at that point.
When Pit awoke, he saw Simon standing over him. Simon was staring back with his stern expression. When he saw Pit's eyes open (something Pit admitted would be hard to miss), Simon reached down to help him up. "You okay?" he asked Pit.
"I…I think so." Pit took Simon's hand. "My head is killing me…"
Simon pulled Pit up. "Yeah, that's how we've all been feeling after we've been freed. Don't worry, it goes away after a few minutes." Pit looked at who else had joined Simon. Kirby, Mario, Olimar, Marth, and others stood behind Simon. Pit hoped Rosalina was in the group, but he couldn't see her.
"Have you guys seen Rosalina?"
"Not-a yet," Mario answered, "But-a once we-a get someone to-a fix the Great Fox, we-a may be able to-a find her in-a space…"
Pit looked around. They appeared to be in a temple in the sky, but not like Palutena's temple or even Zelda's temple. This one was falling apart, its platforms and columns were crumbling. "Where are we?"
"I don't know," Simon replied, "When I got freed, I woke up here, too."
Marth pointed behind Pit. "Everyone!" he yelled, "Look!" Pit turned to see what everyone was looking at. There was a large blue gem on a pedestal. It was shaking and cracking, until it finally shattered. A bright area to the side of the sky became darker.
"Remember that area with the bridge over the valley of light?" Olimar asked, "I think that's where that light was coming from. Let's investigate."
"Alright," Simon said. He looked back at Pit. "Come on, Pit, let's see if we can find Rosalina."
"And Lady Palutena," Pit added, "We need to find her, too."
"We need to find everybody," Marth said, "Not just our loved ones."
Pit and the others continued to explore this strange new world. They fought many copies of the other combatants, and freed many of the originals, but came no closer to finding Rosalina or Palutena. They even searched through the nearby miniature planetary system, the perfect place for Rosalina to be found, but she wasn't anywhere near there. "What if we never find them?" Pit asked the others.
"We'll find them," Marth assured, "We found everyone else."
"But we've been all over the place and we found everyone! There are no secret paths or anything! Palutena and Rosalina aren't here!"
"They must be somewhere," Simon said.
Pit started to cry. Princess Peach noticed. "Hey," she said, "what's wrong, Pit?"
"I just…" he cried, "I don't know what I'd do If anything happened to Rosie or Lady Palutena. I just…I know Lady Palutena got possessed by evil before, and I'd hate for the same thing to happen to her again or Rosalina." He began sobbing.
Princess Peach hugged him. "Let it all out, Pit."
Marth walked over. He hugged Pit as well. "We're here for you."
Simon joined the group hug. "We're all in this together."
Pit stopped crying. He wiped the tears from his eyes. When his vision cleared, he saw Peach, Marth, and Simon standing around him. "Thanks, guys." He looked up and saw Galeem floating miles above them. "Come on," he said, "Let's have a little talk with Galeem. See if he knows where our friends are…"
"That's the spirit, Pit!" Marth exclaimed.
After a brief bout with Master Hand, Simon fought Galeem. Galeem put up a good fight, but Simon managed to weaken him. As it turns out, this may have caused more problems than it solved. Once Galeem retreated to recover, cracks formed in the sky. A lone eyeball stared out of the darkness. An army of Crazy Hands flew out of the void.
"This world is now mine," the eyeball growled, "Galeem's army now belongs to the forces of me…Dharkon." Darkness spread across the land. The group fell into the void Dharkon had created in space-time.
