Chapter 7
Letter

"Alright, second times a charm Ruddiger!"
Ruddiger gave him that glaring look again.
"Aw com'on, I made sure to peek through the windows for any dogs."
Ruddiger's look faded slightly, but was still sort of there.

Varian rolled his eyes and began digging around in his bag to pull out the bobby-pin, his hands slowly starting to shake; ah there was that feeling again. He took a shaky breath in and out, then turned to the backdoor and stuck the bobby-pin inside the keyhole.

He wiggled and shook it around until the lock finally clicked.
"There." Varian put the bobby-pin back in his bag and smiled nervously.

"Com'on Ruddiger, let's go, be careful this time." He added, opening the door and slowly tiptoeing into the house. Ruddiger sighed and followed after him.

The house was heavily decorated, and with valuable stuff, which pleased Varian and the raccoon. "Heck yes, we've hit the jackpot." Varian muttered excitedly underneath his very breath.

Ruddiger chirped happily, but quietly.

Varian gazed around the room, his mouth slightly open with surprise. He headed over to the kitchen first, because as much as treasures to sell was important... Food was more important.

And Ruddiger could agree with that.

Varian gathered the food that he could, mainly ingredients that he could make a ham sandwich out of, because he loved ham sandwiches, and of course anything sweet he could get his hands on too. "Ruddiger, don't touch that." Varian looked over and squinted his eyes.

Ruddiger set the paper down and frowned, chattering grumpily, but Varian paused. "Wait, actually let me see that." He grabbed the paper and looked at it, he recognized that symbol...

"Strange, I've...seen that...symbol before." Varian didn't even read what it said, as he was too focused on the symbol stamped on it. It was a circle with three lines coming from inside it.

He glanced through what it had said;

"Brother Hector and Sister Adira,

I'm so sorry for you have to found out this way, but me and my wife will not be coming home. They have found us and I'm afraid we have no way to escape it this time. Please, take good care of our son, wherever you end up next in your travels.

Your brother, Quirin."

Varian frowned at the letter, "That's really sad..." He put it down and started feeling guilty for stealing... Well, far more than he had already felt guilty for stealing.

He shook his head and kept moving on, trudging past the letter, trying not to think about his actions. Ruddiger jumped off of the counter and climbed up Varian's leg and back, up to perch on his shoulder. "Okay. Something I could sell..." Varian searched the rooms quietly.

Varian caught a glimpse of a sheath and instantly stopped.
"Oh?" He looked at it closely. He gently took the sword from its' sheath and looked at it.

It looked really cool, and if it was made out black, rock-material. Varian looked around and then pouted, he had no way to bring this with him, because it was so big. It wouldn't fit in his bag.

Ruddiger shook his head, trying to tell Varian to leave it alone. But Varian used the strap to put it on his back, despite how heavy it was. Ruddiger slapped his own forehead; why did he try and attempt to convince Varian anything anymore.

"Let's take some of these curtains too, they seem high-quality..." He peered at some brown curtains with red-and-gold trim. Ruddiger helped Varian get the curtains off of the window and into the bag, then Varian caught glimpse of a bunch of coins and a jar of ink, so he put those in his bag too. "Okay, that's enough. We should get going." Varian looked at Ruddiger.

Ruddiger agreed and they both escaped the house with nothing unchanged, other than the stolen food, sword, curtains, coins and ink. They hoped that this would help them get through the week.
