Beyond the Havens.

Authors note - This is my first Lord of the rings fic and it is meant to portray how Frodo might have felt when he left Middle Earth behind at the havens. I don't think it's too bad but please review me and let me know what you think.

Tears blurred his vision as he gazed back across the grey-blue waters. The three small figures standing on the shore grew steadily more distant and unclear, as the great ship drew away from the shore. Nothing in all his journeys had prepared him for the immeasurable sadness of leaving his friends behind forever.
True he still had Gandalf and Bilbo, but that seemed only a small comfort in the drizzling rain on a ship bound for an unknown land.

The sound of elven voices broke the silence then, as they sang a lament for Luthien Tinuviel and Arwen Undomiel, both whom they had lost forever.
Frodo saw in his mind all those who he had lost now. Strider, the bold ranger on Weathertop, who had become Telcontar, Aragorn Elessar. The elfstone, king of a wise and beautiful people. Legolas and Gimli, together on the fair fields of Ithilien, making men stare at the stange sight of elf and dwarf together. Merry and Pippin, laughing as they rode, knights of Gondor and of the Mark. And Sam, faithful Sam, who had saved him and cared for him through everything. He knew that they would be happy and lead long and prosperous lives. Ones which alas, he could not share.

His melancholy thoughts stayed for many days on the long, slow journey westward. Not even the merry presense of the elves could wholly asuage his feelings of loss.

Frodo was standing on deck, gazing across the spray, watching new lands become sharper and clearer with every minute.
He felt a hand on his shoulder. There stood Gandalf and behind him were Bilbo, Elrond and Galadriel. Together they watched the land rise up from the horizon. Silent they were, with eyes bright.
No longer did Frodo feel melancholy. It seemed impossible to be gloomy here. It was so beautiful and serene. Quite untroubled by the worries of the rest of the world.

They stepped out on to white sand that was sprinkled with shells. Beyond the sand was green grass covered with golden flowers. There were tall trees in the fields and in the distance were rolling hills and blue mountains on the horizon.

Elves stepped forward to greet them, smiling and singing songs that were both joyful and sorrowful. Welcoming them home.
"Yes." Thought Frodo. "This is home now. Here I can rest in peace. At last."
