Remember

A/N: Everything belongs to J.K. Rowling, a wonderful storyteller.

This is a repost of a fic I wrote under Svolkame. Several people were confused as to who was the narrator, so I changed it slightly to make it more obvious.

Thank you for reading my story, I hope you enjoy it.

it did no good to hide from them, they always found him, sniveling in a corner, begging for mercy that never came.

there was no hiding from them, but he always tried. he knew it did not good, that they would find him and hurt him for making them look, but he did it anyway.

there in that corner, in that shadowy corner. maybe it could make him forget who he was. he tried that, tried to forget who he was and what he was but some perverse part of his brain always stayed with him, would not allow him to abandon himself.

he was so thin, painfully thin, he fit easily into the tiny crevice, slid into it really, like he was greased. he huddled there, hiding his face in his hands, squeezing his eyes shut, trying to block out his own thoughts.

you fool, his thoughts told him, they always found him, you fool, there's no where you can hide, I will always find you.

please, he whimpered, whom was he talking to? himself? was he talking to himself? why did he care? please, leave me alone, don't hurt me.

i can't do that, the voice whispered, i can't let you go, i can't let you forget.

i will forget, you can't stop me, i will forget. i am nothing, i am nobody, there i've forgotten.

you have forgotten nothing, fool, you will always remember.

i will not!

he burst out of his hole and ran frantically, trying to escape the voice that shouted after him.

there is no forgetting, fool, you will not allow yourself to forget.

he skidded around a corner, how could there be corners? how could there be hiding places in his own mind? he slid on the slick floor, slick floor? how could the floor be slick? it did not exist, nothing existed. he was nobody, nothing existed in nobody's mind.

run, fool, run all day if you like, you will never forget, run.

he slammed into a wall, fell onto his back, frantically climbed to his feet, almost sobbing in his pain and looked up at what he had run into.

and remembered.

he stumbled back, breathing harshly, his heartbeat pounding in his ears. he clapped his hands over his eyes, he was shaking like a three-day drunk. he could hear someone screaming.

nonononononononononononono

why didn't someone help that man? that man that was screaming? screaming like his soul had just been torn from his body?

nonononononononononononononononono

i'll help him, he thought. i'll help that poor soul who just lost everything. i'll help him, even though no one ever helped me.

he looked around for the pitiful wreck that was hoarsely denying his fate. there was no one there, he was alone. but who was screaming?

nonononononononononononono

he was.

Sirius Black awoke with a yell.
