Jade walked down the empty road. She could hear the sound of police sirens getting closer. What she wouldn't give to be a member of the Locos, to be Zoot's woman. But Jade was too afraid. And now Ebony was Zoot's woman. Jade hated Ebony, and one day she would pay. The police car turned the corner into the street. Jade did not run for cover, like the rest of the city did. She walked calmly down the street, paying no attention to the nearing car. Suddenly someone gripped Jade's arm, and pulled her into a bush.
'Are you mad or something? That's the Locos!' a girl whispered into Jade's ear.
The girl waited until the police car passed, then walked out of the bush.
'Are you new around here?' the girl asked.
Jade decided it would be to her advantage to lie. She nodded, and studied the girl's face. She had long blonde hair, and a red flame painted on her cheek. Jade's own hair was also long, but a dark brown colour. She had streaks of green in it, to match her name. Her eyes were a dark brown, and she only had green eyeliner for make-up.
'That was the Locos. They terrorise the streets, ever since the virus happened. You need to stay away from them. You should also avoid the Demon Dogs,' the girl explained.
'Demon Dogs?' Jade pretended to be confused.
'I can't explain now. My name's Kate. Come back to my tribe with me, it isn't safe for you here,' Kate said.
Kate started to walk, and Jade followed.
'My name's Jade, I used to live on a farm, a little way from here,' Jade lied again. 'I stayed there on my own, mourning for my parents. I knew I couldn't stay on the farm for ever, so I came to the city.'
Kate and Jade walked through the city, in silence. They soon came to an abandoned warehouse. Jade followed Kate into the warehouse. There was about 10 people, all sitting and talking. They all turned to Kate.
'This is Jade. She's knew around here, and I offered to let her stay here for a while. Is that O.K with everyone?' Kate asked.
'Whatever. You're the leader,' a boy said.
Jade stared around the room. Every member of the tribe had a different colour flame drawn on their faces.
'This is my tribe. We are called Ember,' Kate said to Jade.
