You're in My Bed

For the ones we can't have
For whatever reasons
May we find them in our minds
Or in another place and time
You're in my bed and yet I'm alone. My desires cloud my usual thoughts and take me to places I rarely allow myself to roam. A place I can 'wear my hair down' and you aren't afraid to look at me as something other than your Captain. How long have I held you at a distance? 'Too long' my heart tells me. I long for the days of your casual touches that meant so much more. The way you'd look at me and we'd share a look or a smile that was only ours.
I long to be in the heavens over earth: to be in the alpha quadrant again. I would turn to you with tears streaming down my face. "We did it", I'd whisper. You'd start toward me with the dimples beaming down at me. You arms would enfold me just before my knees would give out. Tears stain your jacket as I burrow my head under your chin. Your kisses rain down on my hair. I can feel your lungs expand as you take in the scent of me. Tighter you hold me as you whisper words of encouragement and strength. We know the crew is trying hard not to watch us as we hold each other. You release your hold on me and wipe the tears from my face. I take your hand and lead you to the ready room. "I have the bridge, Captain", Tuvok knows we must be alone.
The doors hiss behind us and we are young and shy again. I look to the ground but you pick up my chin with your hand. "I'm in love with you." Your words tumble out without thought. I smile and manage to whisper, "I love you, too." The lump in my throat seems to overwhelm me. A kiss seems odd at this time and we know it will keep. You gather me up in your arms and hold me. Something I have needed more that anything for the past seven years. We make it to the ready room couch and you lay down with me in your arms. You know I need to be held. Just the safety of a man: my man. Such a simple thing in life but one I have missed more than anything else. Strong arms to make it all go away.
I turn over in bed and know you are in the next room. A simple wall separates us. Sometimes I can hear you toss and turn. Are you dreaming of me? Can you wait for me, Chakotay? Please wait. I love you. I turn over and listen to the nothing that fills my room. Sleep soon finds me and I dream a dream that will never be like the real thing. And once again, you are in my bed and yet I'm alone.
