Violet
I was getting ready to get in bed.
My phone dinged with a text.
I grabbed it.
It was from Evan.
"Portland is dull without you."
"Miss you too."
Evan
Ros and me were walking down a sidewalk in Portland.
Violet
"Do you have an answer for me yet?"
"So persistent, Mr. Hawkins."
"That's not a no, Miss. Mikami."
I chuckled softly.
"Meeting Stella for drinks tomorrow."
Stella and me have been hanging out a lot since Sylvie has been gone.
"Don't drink too much."
"I love you. Goodnight. X."
Evan
I was flying Charlie Tango back to Chicago.
I have my piloting license.
"Is that... Is that Mount St. Helens?" Ros questioned from in the passenger seat.
"I changed the flight plan. Get us home sooner."
"Great." She gave her opinion.
"Y- You realize that's a volcano, right?"
I looked over at Ros.
"Relax, Ros. If it goes up, you'll have a ringside seat."
"Lucky me."
We were flying over Mount St. Helens.
An alarm beeped.
I looked down at the gauges.
"Ev- Evan, what is that?"
The helicopter rumbled.
"Oh, my God! Evan!"
I was trying to find a place to land.
"Oh, no!"
"Shoot."
"Evan, what is going on?"
"Mayday! Mayday! Mayday!"
"What is happening?!"
Ros gasped.
"Evan!"
"There. There, there, there!" She pointed out.
We crashed in a bunch of trees as I landed Charlie Tango.
Violet
I walked into Molly's.
Stella laughed at Severide.
"Oh, you remember this guy?"
"Oh, the one with the..."
"Stella!"
"Oh!"
She got up.
Stella laughed.
"Yes! Oh! Hi!"
We hugged.
"Oh, my God. You're so tan and glowing."
"Oh, I know."
Cruz stood up.
"You want a Beer, Violet?" Severide questioned.
"Yes! Please, please."
Severide called Herrmann over.
"Hi, Joe."
"Hey."
We hugged.
"Hi. How's it going?"
"So? Congratulations, Paramedic-In-Charge."
"Right? She's a big deal now."
I chuckled.
"And how's, uh, your hottie?"
"Uh... Evan is good. Um... Uh... He asked me to move in with him."
Stella was surprised.
"What?"
"Violet's moving in with Evan."
"Oh, that's great. You know, we could use the privacy." Severide commented.
Stella chuckled.
"He's so subtle, it kills me."
She hit his shoulder.
"Stop."
Stella sighed.
"So, you're serious. But are you happy?"
His phone buzzed.
"Cause that's all I care about."
"I- Well, I mean, it's complicated, but I'm- I've never been happier."
"Hey, Mia. What's up?" Severide greeted, answering his phone.
"Did you hear about Joe's show? It was incredible. Really. He was amazing. He got rave reviews."
"I got to check it out."
"Wait, wait, Mia. Slow down. Uh... Okay. Yeah, yeah. We're on our way."
Severide hung up.
"Um... Evan's chopper went missing on the way back from Portland. They're sending out search parties right now. Come on. Let's go."
We drove back to our apartment.
"For more on this breaking story, let's go out to the field and our reporter, Raquel Taylor. Raquel?"
It switched to Raquel.
"Thank you, Joe. I'm speaking to you live from the private helicopter terminal at Chicago..."
"They'll find him. He'll be okay." Mia told me.
She was sitting next to me on the couch.
Mia had her hand on my arm.
"It's Evan."
I put my hand over hers.
"The helicopter was an Airbus Helicopter H130..."
"Yeah. Is there anything we can do?" Severide questioned.
"And Evan Hawkins, although only 27 years old, had extensive flying experience."
"Alright. Bye."
He hung up.
"One of Chicago's youngest billionaires, Hawkins is the charismatic Chief of Paramedics..."
"Will someone shut them up?" Severide questioned.
"No, please. Leave it on."
"Just turn it down please, Cruz."
Evan's brother, Elliot was here too.
He turned it down.
"Thank you."
"You're shivering." Mia pointed out.
"I'll get you a sweater. Okay."
She got up.
His Mom, Grace replaced Mia.
"Violet."
She sat next to me.
"Tea."
Grace sat it on the Coffee table.
"He's gonna be fine." I assured her.
"He has to be okay." I pointed out.
We looked at each other.
"We haven't had any time. We need to have more time."
"You're going to have plenty of time. We are so glad that you're here with us and in Evan's life."
Grace looked back at the TV.
"You've made such a difference to him. He never let anyone get... Close until you came along."
"Grace, he adores you."
"I know, but children grow apart from their parents and that's... That's fine. As long as they're happy. And he is happy with you."
She sniffled.
"And that's all I ever wanted."
"Turn it up." Mia ordered.
Cruz turned it up.
"It has been confirmed that Evan Hawkins and his colleague Ros Baker have been found safe and well, and are at this moment on their way back to Chicago."
Evan stepped out of the elevator.
"Sources tell us their helicopter had to make a..."
Evan
"What the hell are you all doing here?" I questioned when I saw Mom, Mia, Elliot, Severide, Stella, and Cruz.
Mom gasped when she saw me.
"Evan! Oh, my God!"
We hugged.
"Oh, thank God."
"Evan!" Mia called.
"How did you get here?" She questioned, hugging me.
"Later, Mia."
"What happened? Why didn't you call?" Mom questioned.
"I- I had an accident. I lost my phone."
We hugged.
"We know. It's been all over the news."
"I'm fine. Ros is fine."
"Dad. He's here."
"Oh, my God." Mia commented.
"He just walked in."
"I'm okay." I told Mom.
"I mean, he looks like crap, but he's in one piece."
"No, he doesn't." She told him.
"Yeah, he does." Mia agreed with Elliot.
"Guys, relax, I'm fine."
I broke the hug with Mom.
"Okay?" I questioned.
"Come here, man."
Elliot hugged me.
"Need to say hi to my girl."
"Okay."
"Come on, Mom. I told you they'd be okay." Mia told her.
I walked pass them.
I walked over to Violet.
She stood up.
"I need a drink." Elliot said.
"Me too." Mia agreed.
"Miss me?"
Violet sobbed softly as she wrapped her arms around me.
"Hey, hey, hey."
"Oh, my God."
She pulled back.
"I thought..."
"Hey, hey. Violet, it's alright."
I took Violet's face in between my hands.
"Violet, I'm here."
"I was so scared."
She sobbed.
"I was so scared."
"Hey."
Violet looked up at me.
"I thought I lost you forever."
I shook my head.
"Not a chance. I'm here."
I kissed her on the forehead as she was sobbing.
We were eating at the table.
"That's when all my instruments lit up. Had a fire in the tail, lost both engines."
"Both of them?" Mia questioned.
"Yeah. Thank you."
Gail had brought me a Beer.
"I tried to find somewhere safe to land but it was all trees. We hit them pretty hard, but luckily we were both able to crawl out of there."
"Thank goodness." Mom commented.
"Thank God." Violet commented.
"Sorry, guys, but I gotta take off." Cruz told us.
"Okay."
He stood up.
"Cruz, thanks for being here. Means the world to Violet." I thanked Joe, standing up.
We shook hands.
"Of course. Hey... Welcome home, Chief Hawkins."
"Evan, please."
"Well, it's late, and these two should get some rest." Dad said, pointing at Mia and Elliot.
"Yes."
"Grace, shall we?"
"Yes."
"Yeah, I think we're gonna head home too, bro." Elliot told me.
"Cool."
All of them got up.
We all headed over to the elevator.
"Come here."
I kissed Mom on the cheek.
She hugged me.
"Mm."
"I'm okay, Mom."
"I know."
"Mom." Mia called.
"Okay."
Mom chuckled, breaking the hug.
"We'll see you tomorrow, Violet."
"Good night."
Dad and her got in the elevator.
I kissed Violet's head as the elevator doors closed.
"It's after midnight."
"I'm not tired."
"No. It's your Birthday."
"Yeah."
Violet chuckled.
"Happy Birthday."
"Thank you."
"Do you still have that gift I gave you?"
"Yes."
I headed over to my bag.
I pulled the box out.
Violet sat on the stairs that lead down into the Living Room.
"You know you didn't have to. All I want is you."
"Just open it." She told me.
"Okay."
I opened the box.
"A key chain."
"Turn it over."
I turned it over.
It said "Yes."
It lit up when I hit a button.
"Does this mean yes yes?"
"Yes. Yes, yes, yes."
We both laughed as I picked Violet up, spinning her around in my arms.
"Wait. So, this whole time, I had the answer in my pocket?"
She nodded her head.
I chuckled.
"Violet Mikami, what am I gonna do with you?"
We kissed.
