Welcome, new readers and old, to the celebration of a solid decade of the Pokedex Adventures fanfic series. We planned to write much more than we posted, but whatever we didn't finish will go here.
To celebrate those 10 years since we first posted Not Always Black and White, here are the scenes we discussed but never put in for various reasons. Most common being "They triggered writer's block" but, surprisingly, "The story was in the dramatic phase and this would kill the momentum" was a close second.
WARNING: Spoilers for Not Always Black and White ahead. Not just the games, but the fanfic we wrote for them.
(Deleted from Chapter 2: Hilbert without Hilda)
The Oshawott then jumped high into the air over Ghetsis's head, and came down on the man with his mouth open wide as his victim dropped his own jaw and his eye bugged out.
Tommy's mind was truly a frightening thing, for it is here where his assault allowed him to eat the whole man in one bite and still have room for more. Then everyone cheered as his new trainer ran up to congratulate him. "Great job, buddy," dream-Hilbert said as he pulled a tray of sweets from behind his back. "You saved the world and our friendship. Now have all the cupcakes." Then Hilbert threw the contents of the tray in the air, and the hundreds of cupcakes came raining back down faster than Tommy could eat mid-fall, but the small otter still tried.
However, when Tommy opened his eyes, he found that the cupcakes weren't real, and his jaw was stuck as he had only managed to fit half of the man's head in his mouth.
Ghetsis groaned.
Tommy blinked.
Ghestsis shouted, "It's on my face! Get it off! Get it off!" as he blindly ran around trying to pull off the Oshawott.
Tommy, being surprisingly comfortable despite the fact that his jaw was unhinged like a snake's, did not make any effort to remove himself from the guy's scalp.
Hilbert laughed in the back. N was rolling on the floor in laughter in the front. Most of the rest of the audience either found it hilarious or disturbing and reacted appropriately.
Cheren threw his arms in the air in frustration. "That's it," he exclaimed. "This story's getting too weird. We either get something to balance out this stupidity, or I walk."
Hilbert shrugged, "My sister's probably still in the basement. She could join us if the sunlight doesn't kill her."
"That can't possibly do any good," Bianca protested.
Cheren perked up at the idea. "It'll be enough."
(Chapter 13: Tommy ditches Hilbert)
Watching N, Hilda and Erika walk into the cart, Tommy got jealous. He tried to follow them in, but the door closed as soon as Hilda took her seat. Not bothered, Tommy climbed into the next cart with a little boy and his dad, as if he belonged to them.
"Tommy?" Hilbert asked, noticing the lack of Dewott next to him. He looked up just as the startled boy warmed up to the sudden appearance of Tommy. Hilbert raised his fist to the sky. "Traitor!"
(Chapter 20: Looking for Skyla's Gym)
Skyla had told them that her Gym was the building with her plane parked in front of it. Unfortunately, she had failed to give a description of what her plane looked like.
"Is it that red plane?" Hilbert asked.
"No," Hilda said, frowning. "That one has a guy pilot getting out of it."
"What about that black one?"
"That one looks like it was in advertising."
"What about that big one in front of the silver building with the word GYM on it?"
Hilda stared at the building. Then at the plane. Then at the building. Then at her brother. "How stupid are you?"
"Hey, you were looking right at it." Hilbert pointed to her. "I point that question to you."
(Chapter 23: The List)
"N is the king of Team Plasma?" Hilbert yelped. When Hilda did not seem surprised, he turned on her. "And you knew? And didn't tell me?"
Hilda kept her eyes on the ground. "It just never seemed like the right time to tell you."
"Not the right..." Hilbert knew his sister was in a fragile state, and he still couldn't stop himself from growling and yelling at her. "You had our entire adventure to tell me!"
"I only knew since the Ferris wheel!"
"Oh, just since the Ferris wheel!" Hilbert threw his arms up dramatically. Hilda flinched. N and Zekrom wondered if they should really be witnessing this sibling argument. Hilbert didn't notice any of it. "We conquered Nimbasa. There was the drawbridge...actually, no, you're excused from the drawbridge, those Ducklett were out for blood."
"What?" said N, which was the only sound he could make.
Hilbert didn't seem to notice. "There was Driftveil, and the Cold Storage, and the cave, and the tower, and Mistralton, and another cave...this list is obnoxiously long, Hilda! Even on the way up here, you could have told me!"
Hilda finally looked up. "Well, forgive me for not thinking you were mature enough to handle the truth!"
"Oh, I'm immature? Miss Daystar thinks I'm immature?"
"It's called a joke, Mr. Chocolate Milk! Maybe you would have known sooner if you had ever, in the fifteen years you've been breathing, just once demonstrated that you had more than two brain cells to rub together!"
N decided to step in before it could get any more awkward. "Um...yeah, hi. King of Team Plasma, remember? Just summoned a giant dragon?" He gestured to Zekrom, who waved. "He's only been waiting about 500 years for this, so I think a bit of attention is owed here?"
Hilbert and Hilda looked up at Zekrom, and together, they each raised a hand in a half-hearted wave. "Hi," they said in unison, before returning to the argument.
"Maybe it's hard to rub more than two brain cells when I'm dodging your countless insults!"
"Maybe the insults only started because you were acting like an idiot!"
"Maybe I was only acting like an idiot because we were five years old and all the cool kids were putting crayons up their noses! You're the one who constantly called me a parasite since you knew what the word meant!"
"Well, I was born with you attached!"
"We weren't unjointed twins, Hilda!"
"The term is conjoined twins, Hilbert!"
N sighed in disappointment and looked up at Zekrom. "I'm sorry," he said. "They're usually cool, I promise."
(Chapter 23: Cheren knew)
As the twins left the tower, Hilda leaning on Hilbert, Cheren frowned. "What happened?"
"The love of her life turned out to be the king of Team Plasma and flew off on the back of a giant dragon."
"She had a crush on N?"
Hilbert nearly dropped his sister in shock. "You knew N was the king of Team Plasma?"
"He has a Twitter," Cheren explained.
"Did everyone know but me?"
"I didn't know," said Bianca.
"Thank you."
(Chapter 24: Hilbert ruins things)
"Route 4," Hilda said to herself, staring out at the desert. Nothing but sand and rocks, as far as the eye could see. "I thought I was done with this place. I should have known that fate would lead me here, right back to -"
Crunch.
"And the moment is ruined," Hilda finished, as Hilbert smiled nervously.
"Sorry," he said, his mouth full of Doritos.
(Chapter 24: Zombie lizards)
"The Nacrene Museum has a dragon skeleton on display," Alder suggested. "What if it's Reshiram's remains?"
"The skeleton is a Dragonite," Hilda informed him. "And even if it was Reshiram, I've seen enough horror movies to know that reanimating the dead is always a bad idea."
"I wasn't thinking reanimation. I was thinking cloning from the leftover DNA."
"That would be Jurassic Park," Hilda corrected, "and that would be even worse."
"Come on! Dinosaurs are just big lizards!"
"Big lizards that destroyed everything in every movie of the series!"
"I'm with Hilda on this one," Hilbert interrupted. "This would be a zombie lizard - the worst of both worlds."
(Chapter 25: Drunk Alder)
"You know who the real dragon is here?" Alder slurred, swirling his wine glass around. "My ex! Man, could she roar!"
"He's not going to help," Hilbert observed.
Hawes shook his head. "We only gave him the one actual glass," he said, confused.
Lenora forced a smile. "This is most likely a mental breakdown. Not the wine."
(Chapter 25: Destiny)
Hilbert took the stone from Lenora, looking it over carefully, before handing it to Hilda to try. "Be careful, everyone," he said as Hilda, failing the task herself, passed it to Bianca. "This rock contains our destiny."
Bianca shook the rock violently.
"Give me that," Cheren hissed, snatching it from the blonde's grip.
(Chapter 28: Presenting the Light Stone)
Drayden took the stone from Hilda, holding it up to his face. He turned it over in his hands, studying for any imperfections. He tapped on it. He gently shook it.
Then he licked it.
"Why would he do that?" Hilda asked, disgusted.
"It's an archaeologist thing," Hilbert explained. "You wouldn't understand."
"Do you understand?"
"Am I an archaeologist?"
"No."
"Then no, I do not understand."
(Chapter 29: Post-battle gifts)
"I get a Master Ball?" Hilbert asked, his eyes shining and his voice squeaking.
"Your sister gets a Master Ball," Professor Juniper corrected him. "You get a Max Revive."
"A Max Revive?" Hilbert whined. "But that's boring! In order to use them, I have to let another team member lose. They're clunky, and pointy, and I can't eat them if I get bored on the road..."
"You can't eat a Master Ball if you get bored on the road," Hilda pointed out, but Hilbert was on a roll.
"A Master Ball is useful!"
"So is a Max Revive," Juniper reminded him, and handed it over. "You're welcome."
(Chapter 29: Washing machine)
Rood opened the door to the laundry room of Team Plasma's castle, somehow knowing from the sounds of the splashing that it was a terrible idea.
"Help!" one of the ninjas called out.
"It's trying to eat us!" shouted the second as he struggled to pull himself out of the machine.
"It got my hair!" screamed the third.
Rood slowly closed the door, deciding that it would just be best to pretend it never happened.
Before he was out of earshot, he heard three voices shout in unison, "Not the rinse cycle!" as the machine gurgled. He pulled a cell phone from his pocket and called the grunt that used to be a repairman.
"Hello, John. Remember when you gave up plumbing? ... Yes, it's the washing machine. ... Of course it's the Shadow Triad!"
(Chapter 32: Plasma castle)
When the castle had finished rising from the ground, everyone not called N was left awestruck.
"Are you impressed by how I was able to raise my castle?" N asked.
"A lot of questions is what you raised," said Hilda. "How were you able to build this massive...thing without anyone noticing? Especially the champion who practically sleeps here?"
"Does sleep here," Alder corrected.
"We did it underground," N answered as if it was enough.
"That makes less sense. How were you able to build a huge castle underground without being noticed? And what kind of mechanism can support that weight without the league building collapsing?"
"Enough talk! It's time to finish this." And with that, several platforms shot from the sides of the castle, and into the sides of the League. But this impressive scene was overshadowed by an all too familiar foe lining the platform.
"Stairs!" the twins shouted in unison and anger.
"Why would you add more stairs to a location that already has fifty thousand of them?" Hilda shouted in anger.
N dropped his smile, looked between Alder's stairs and the stairs he added, and looked back at the twins. "I did not intend for this."
"Would the challenge you gave me to keep my Pokémon include these stairs as well?" Alder asked.
N looked the champion in the eyes. "Yes."
Alder went back to thinking.
(Chapter 33: Throne room)
"Finally," N said as he saw the twins enter. He raised his voice to get their attention, and launched into the speech he'd been rehearsing for this day. "After all this time, the heroes of truth and ideals come together! The final showdown to determine -"
"You're gonna have to speak up!" Hilda shouted back. "We can hear your voice, but we can't hear your words!"
"What?" N shouted. "You want some birds? What does that have to do with an epic dragon fight?"
"You need to come closer!" Hilda was practically screaming by now. Her throat hurt already.
"I won't lie, closure does sound good!" N shook his head. "I'm coming closer, I can't hear you like this! Don't move!"
(Chapter 34: Aqua Jet)
It was down to Tommy and Zoroark. Neither was in good shape, and it was likely that the winner of this battle would be determined by sheer dumb luck.
Then Hilbert had an idea. "Tommy, use Aqua Jet!"
He'd been counting on the fact that Aqua Jet was usually fast enough to hit first regardless of the opponent's battle speed. He forgot that Tommy had only a vague idea of what Aqua Jet was.
"Uh...Tommy?" Hilbert asked, watching as his Samurott attempted to pick up the plastic plane in his mouth. N and Zoroark, fortunately, were too confused to do anything.
"He's doing the Nacrene City version of the move," Hilda explained, mouth twitching into a smile despite the serious situation.
Hilbert groaned. "Of course he is," he grouched, before he finally shouted at Tommy. "I meant the actual move, you moron!"
Or, that's what he tried to say. Hilda clamped her hand over his mouth before he could get the last word out. "I want to see where this goes."
Tommy finally picked the plane up in his teeth. Their entertainment over, Zoroark turned to N with a grin and silently mocked Tommy's attempt.
Then he was promptly hit with a Water Pulse-charged plastic airplane, and collapsed, ending the battle in Hilbert's favor.
"Are you impressed?" Hilbert said with a laugh, forgetting how annoyed he was with his starter mere moments ago.
N picked up the airplane that had just taken out his closest friend and honorary brother. "Yes," he admitted. "Quite."
And he tossed the plane aside.
(Chapter 35: Awkward moments)
"You may kiss the bride!" Hilbert declared, and gave Ghetsis the hardest shove a slightly out of shape 15-year-old could give.
It worked. Ghetsis stumbled, and didn't catch himself in time. The push launched him right into Alder, triggering yet another accidental kiss. Except, unlike N and Hilda, there was no attraction to each other (or men at all, for that matter) between them. In fact, both of them were rather repulsed by each other, so they jumped apart immediately, both spitting.
It wasn't just for awkwardness, though. It wasn't even for amusement. This incident gave Cheren time to release his Emboar, who promptly grabbed Ghetsis by the hand and started pulling.
(Chapter 35: An Abandoned Reference)
As Alder was arresting Ghetsis, Cheren was getting a good look around the room. He focused on the dragons, as everyone should, and then he spoke.
"When did it turn into Yu-Gi-Oh here?"
Reshiram tilted her head in confusion. "What's a Yu-Gi-Oh?"
Zekrom chuckled and patted her on the shoulder. "We have much to discuss."
