"Bubblegum"
by Digigirl
Davis Motomiya's eyes scanned the list he was holding.
-Milk
-Bread
-Eggs
-Cheese
His fingers closed around the bill he had, and the boy glanced up at his
mother.
"What if I have some extra?"
Mrs. Motomiya shrugged lightly.
"You can buy something with the leftover money, I guess.."
She turned and went back to the baking she was doing.
Her son swung a light jacket around his shoulders-it was a chilly autumn in
Japan.
Soon Davis was outside, walking along the worn sidewalk-a few leaves falling
gently around him.
Fall was one of his favourite seasons. It meant steaming cocoa, bonfires,
festivals, leaf piles, and a number of other things.
The boy smiled to himself and opened the door of Hoshi Variety.
"Hello, Mr. Hoshi!" He called out. A voice yelled back-
"Is that you, Davis?"
"Yeah! I've got a list of things to pick up for mom!"
"Okay!" The owner of the voice stepped out behind the counter. He was a
short, stocky man with thinning grey hair and twinkling dark eyes.
"Nice to see you, young man. And what do you need?"
"Milk, eggs, cheese, bread-holy cats! Is that who I think it is?" Davis' and
Mr. Hoshi's eyes travelled to the doorway, where a tall, lean, dark-haired
boy stood, a cold expression on his face.
"K-Ken Ichijouji?" Davis croaked.
The boy shot him a Look, then strode to aisle 3.
"My, my. Now I've seen everything! Famous boy geniuses gracing this lil' 'ol
place? Now I can die a happy man, I tell ya!"
Davis opened and closed his mouth like a goldfish, his gaze fixed upon Ken.
Mr. Hoshi smiled slightly.
"Well, go on. Ask him for his autograph!" he whispered.
"W-what? Autograph? I couldn't...that'd be embarrassing..."
"Go on, Davis! Do it!"
He swallowed, then walked towards Ken.
"H-Hello..." He said cautiously, reddening.
"What." Said Ken shortly. It wasn't a question.
"I-I...c-can....I....you....can I have your autograph?"
Ken stared.
"I suppose so."
Silence.
"Hurry up! You're WASTING my TIME."
"Uhh..."
Davis fumbled around in his pocket for something signable.
He finally drew out a half-full pack of bubblegum, and handed it to the boy
genius.
Ken stared at him in diisbelief for a moment, then took out a black pen
and jotted his signature down on the wrapper.
He quickly stuffed it back in Davis's hand, then turned and left the store.
Davis peered down at it, then smiled.
"YES! I got Ken Ichijouji's autograph! WOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOO!!"
Mr. Hoshi chuckled and packaged Davis's groceries, then handed the bag to
him.
"That's quite the treasure, that is." He said, pointing the to the bubblegum
wrapper.
"Totally! I can't wait to go home and show my mom!"
With that, he turned and left the store, smiling happily.
Fin.
