Krazoa Palace, Sauria-The Dinosaur Planet, 13 ALW, 0500 Local Time
"Father!"
The Blue vixen ran and knelt at her injured Father's side cursing herself for not arriving there earlier with her staff, now it was too late.
"Krystal! I'm glad you came. "
Despite their Cerinian upbringing, the Saurian tongue seemed to be almost natural to them due to their unique telepathic abilities as they spoke it fluently.
"The Krazoa… They need your help… They are dying…"
"The Krazoa?..."
"Enter the shrine, take the test. Return the Spirits to their rightful place, I know you can do it…"
Krystal was baffled, why was her father telling her all this? Her father coughed, causing her to reach for his chest only to withdraw it upon touching his clearly visible chest wound. If her blood red stained hand was anything to go off of, he did not have much time left. With what was left of his strength, he slid a sliver handled longsword across the floor toward her. The gem on the center of the cross guard was blue, the same color of her people and the blade itself was all but completely covered in blunt rock, making it look like it was cut out from a larger rock and making the weapon practically useless. Krystal recognized the sword immediately and looked into her father's eyes with even more fear and sadness as they began to water.
"Find him Krystal, find Sabre. He will help you save this world and our own. Save one planet…"
Her father let out some more raspy coughs before looking at his daughter's face for the last time.
"Save two…"
With that, his chest fell for the last time.
"No! No! No, Please! Father! Father!"
Tears flowed freely down the vixen's face as a sense of grief and loneliness set in, as far as she knew she was now the last of her kind and the only one who could guard her people's most sacred artifact. Sobbing loudly, she clutched her Father's now lifeless body to her own
"Father!" she sounded almost like a child with her last cry before finally collapsing in grief. Time around her seemed to stand still as years worth of loneliness and pain came out in grief-stricken wails that would have caused anyone to notice her, but no one came… not even a Dinosaur, she was truly alone.
With a heavy sigh, she picked up the sword and after wrapping it up in cloth slung it over her back as she wiped the rest of her tears off her face and stood up. It was up to her now to find and deliver the blade to its chosen wielder. However, a part of her doubted the legend attached to it, after all, where was Sabre when Cerinia was attacked? And why wasn't he there to stop it? She just shook her head, for now she would hold onto it, but her father's last words continued to echo in her mind over and over. "Save this world and our own?" "Save one planet, save two?" What did it all mean? How could you save a planet that was already destroyed? Perhaps finding the Krazoa would give her the answers she needed. So, with a heavy heart and one last look at the body of whom she thought was the only other one of her kind, she got up and began to make her way to the Krazoa shrine, mentally preparing herself for whatever test awaited her. Little did she know that she would not have to take on the heavy task of saving Dinosaur Planet alone, and well... that's where I come in.
The Great Fox, Somewhere in space, 0530 Local Time
A small explosion caused me to jump from my resting place on the couch. I ran down to the hangar as quickly as I could to see the damage. I was both relieved and annoyed to find that the Great Fox or my teammates had not been damaged in any way, but one of the engines of the Arwings was on fire.
"Whoa! Watch it Slip! Or else we'll be down another Arwing and a Mothership!" Falco said, jolting from his seat.
"Hey! It's not as easy as it looks." Slippy argued as he put out the fire with a fire extinguisher.
I shook my head with a exasperated sigh.
"Slip, I appreciate what you are doing, but I think it would be better if you repaired the Arwings for this mission, not damaged them more."
Slippy grumbled and went back to working on the Arwing, Falco turned me,
"I just hope that General Pepper will pay well from this mission, we could suuuure use it." Falco said.
This was followed by Slippy crying out in pain at the sound of a short circuit, and a connecting "I'm Ok."
I sighed.
"Tell me about it," I groaned.
I had to admit, the peace was nice, but at the same time, when you're a mercenary war and conflict is sadly your paycheck. I should probably tell you who exactly I am assuming you haven't figured it out already, I'm Fox, Fox McCloud, Son of James McCloud and current leader of the Star Fox team. It had been 8 years since the fall of Andross and the ending the or the Lylat wars with Star Fox's assistance. But since then, we have had very little work, so funds have been a bit tight. Thankfully, we got a job this morning. Sauria, otherwise known as Dinosaur Planet, was asking for help through the King and Queen Earthwalker. This mission would be a bit different than most considering that most of it would be on foot with no blasters would be authorized at this time based on the relatively peaceful environment of Sauria and the nature of the mission. Not to mention that until we could get the other Arwings up and running (which could take days with the state or repair they are in), I would be pretty much alone.
I went back upstairs and reclined on the Great Fox's couch in the main part of the pilot's bay, we were still a bit out, but I didn't know exactly how far as I didn't take the time to check the screen. My eyelids grew heavy and shut, only to open again frantically as I bolted up. Why was I so tired? Space Travel didn't normally exhaust me, heck missions didn't even drain me as physically as physically drained as I was now. Well, I guess I could take a small nap wouldn't hurt. So I laid back, closed my eyes and just like that, out like a light. I wasn't sure how long I was asleep, but my dream was… Err… Strange to say the least.
I was on a planet with a clear, starry blue sky that was illuminated by two moons, the planet environment I was in was mostly jungle with a few clearings. I was walking toward one such clearing in brown, leather, clothes fit for a seasoned warrior from another more primal planet, and what was stranger, my fur was blue. I did not recognize what I was wearing, where I was, or even why my fur was a different color and yet there was something inevitably familiar. I could hear a whispering voice gradually growing clearer as I trudged through the jungle. And through the dense foliage I could make out something glowing faintly as the voice gradually became clearer.
"Sabre… Sabre…."
The same word, a name I think, repeated over and over again. It was unsettling but also strangely comforting, and I couldn't help but feel that it was directed toward me. But that wasn't my name, so how could it be addressing me? I came to a clearing where the source of the light and presumably the voice came from. What I saw was a silver Longsword embedded in a smooth stone, no one else was anywhere to be found. Where was that voice coming from?
"What's going on!?" I cried looking around. "Who are you!? Where are you!? Show yourself!"
No answer except the same word whispered in my mind. I looked at the sword again, feeling strangely drawn to it. I took a few more steps forward till I stood in front of the rock. Without thinking, I put both hands around the sword and pulled it out of the rock. The blade glowed blue as I was blinded by sudden energy, seeing multiple images in my mind, a blue vixen trapped in a crystal wearing a short golden dress, golden gauntlets, a necklace, bands on her tail, and boots, a green dinosaur-like figure with a horned helmet and a metal claw for a right hand, and even Andross himself.
"Fox! Fox!"
I jolted awake, breathing heavily as Peppy's face gradually became clear.
"Are you alright, Fox? You look like you've just seen a ghost. Heck, you're pale as a ghost."
"I'm fine Peppy," I said, getting up from the couch.
"Now entering Sauria's Orbit," ROB Informed us.
What? I looked out the window, there it was Dinosaur Planet. Just by looking at it, I could tell that the flora and fauna was rich. A lot of planets in the Lylat system were inhabited, but some of them you could tell there was life on it just by looking at it, and Sauria was one of them. What shocked me the most however, is that was in pieces. Even though we were sent images of it when General Pepper debriefed us, seeing it in person was quite a different experience. Even though I tried not to get attached to jobs to keep myself professional as a Mercenary, I couldn't help but feel my heart break. How did this happen, how could this happen? Then I heard it again, that voice… but this time when I was awake? Yes it was, but the words were indistinct, soft. I tried to focus on the voice harder, maybe I could make out something…
"Fox! You need to go, the sooner we get this mission done, the sooner we can get paid!" Peppy cried.
I jolted out of my slight trance.
"Umm… Right, sorry."
I snapped back to my typical mercenary attention.
"ROB, prep my Arwing for launch!"
With renewed energy and focus, I ran down to the hangar into my Arwing and soon I was on my way to the surface of the planet. Finally, the mission was going to begin. But how exactly was I going to accomplish it? In my time as a pilot, I've done many amazing things, fought many villains, and saved many people and planets. But putting a planet back together seemed a bit above my paygrade. Oh well, a job's a job.
"Sabre… Sabre…"
That voice again, and this time I understood it and recognized what it was saying. What was going on? Where was it coming from this time? I shook my head to clear it. Focus Fox, you can talk to a Psychologist about these dreams and voices later. Right now, just focus on the mission. I pushed the accelerator lever forward more, speeding up as I prepared to begin the mission that would change my life forever, as I discovered the truth behind the voice calling me, the sword connected to it, and the planet I saw in my dreams.
