This was inspired by Grey Mage.
Dante was terrified, shaking in the heat of the Underworld. A hard hand wrapped around his shoulders, tugging him away to something dark and terrible. He could feel it, whatever it was, it was like a magnetic core of pure hate. His skin tingled, his very soul ached in fear. He knew he was going to die, that was imprinted onto his very soul. It was beyond instinct, it was knowledge. Knowlege his very soul knew...
He was going die... unless he escaped.
Turning to the demon holding him, a big ugly brute with a thick jaw and angry expression, Dante knew he was the way out. "Why do you want me?"
The demon turned to him. "I want nothing, I am just a delivery service... the Source wants you, wants your life."
"Why?"
"You're a wizard, he hates your kind, simply put."
Terrified, he shook, he believed the Demon oddly enough. Why else would he kidnap him from his Foster home, right out of the door and teleport him to the firey depths of the Cavernous Underworld in a swirl of light? Biting his lip, he looked around, for anything he could find... anything to escape. To his extreme luck, he saw his salvation... maybe anyway. The demon had a knife in his belt... just waiting to be taken.
Without hesitation, Dante elbow the demon in the ribs grabbed the dagger and drove it home in the monster's throat. It choked, holding it's throat wildly until it's body burst into ash and flames.
He ran, immediately, into the darkness and towards anything he could find to save him from the monsters around him... he could feel something, lighter and kinder and more pleasing, a soft presence so far away. He knew, somehow, that it was his salvation. "Please, please, please!" He muttered as light gathered around his body. The world vanished and before he knew it, he was at the feet of a beautiful woman with long brown hair and tanned skin. She was in all black, he knew she wasn't human but she was his salvation, "Please, help me."
Bending down, the woman placed her hands on his face and recoiled. "They found a wizard, a newborn... one from one of the ancient lines... no wonder the Underworld is in a tizzy." Biting her lip, she bent down at him. "Listen, I cannot save you but I know who can. I will take you to a lady, one named Imara. She's ugly but a powerful demon sorceress, skilled in the craft. She will protect you, she owes me and she always fulfills her debts. Her lair is protected from intrusion of all types, even the Source cannot get in. I'll have her train you for a year, then you should be strong enough to protect yourself. It is the most I can do... okay?"
He nodded, unsure and panicking. "Thank you." He had no idea why she wanted to save him but he knew he could trust, her... the same way he knew he was going to die earlier. It was beyond instinct, it was true knowledge... imprinted onto his very soul.
"I wish I could do more, but the Source really wants you kind dead, but I won't help him kill a kid... not if I can help it... and not in my home." Grabbing him, they vanished in a shimmer, appearing at the entrance to a large cave. At the door was a powerful, ugly woman garbed in a red dress.
"What do you want, seer? What is this, a snack?"
"A wizard, one of the last young ones alive. He was just activated, his powers surfacing. You know what that means, he is a scholar at heart, his powers, unlike ours and witches, is born of learning and scholarly pursuits, he could be a great ally for you... or an enemy to the Source, who I know you loathe. Plus you owe me."
Imara smirked. "Very well... you must be in quite the rush, I did wonder what the excitement was about... what do you want?"
"Train him, for a year, make him powerful enough to fight back or at least useful enough to not be killed."
"I will train him... But he must pay me back and he must prove a useful assistant, I have no time for fools."
The Seer smiled. "I can see his future, and his past, he is exceptionally bright even for a wizard... so... a deal?"
"Deal, come in boy and I will get a good look at you."
And just like that, the newly made Wizard Dante's life had changed forever...and, unfortunately, he barely played a role in that at all, but that did not mean he would not drink his fill and gain the most of it... once he was done getting over his panic, that was.
