Ladies and gentlemen! I humbly welcome you to the first chapter of this story!

Disclaimer: I do not own any of Magic Kaito or Detective Conan characters, the story concept is, however, my own.
As usual, I don't consider the new Magic Kaito anime canon, so in this universe Spider does not exist as a character. I'm not a native speaker and while I do try my best, there might be some grammar or style errors, feel free to comment if you see any, as it only helps me grow! In the end notes I will be adding some explanations if I use any japanese words or references to anime/manga, as well as some explanation to my recent absence.

And with all of that out of the way, it's time to start the story,
Please enjoy and review!

KID stood on top of a building holding back a yawn, while idly watching police cars driving away chasing his decoy. Today's heist was yet another success, as proven by the gem hidden inside of his pocket. He knew that he should be feeling happy, excited, or at least satisfied but instead he was unsettled and simply exhausted. He had anticipated Saguru to pull something off today, yet the half-Brit did not even show up. It was unnerving.

Ever since the heist was announced a week ago, Sagru had been acting off. More than usual that is. There were no snide comments, poking at Kaito's hidden identity, no promises of capture, heck, the damn guy didn't even smirk challenging him! It would have been better if the damned prick skipped school. But instead he kept drilling holes in Kaito's back, looking something in between worried or thoughtful. The magician did try to rouse him into saying what it was all about but he never got an answer. This led Kaito to believe that whatever it was, it was serious this time. Either the detective decided to do something drastic, or worse, he found out the police had something nasty in store. For all he knew, this could have involved some international force. It's not like Kaito could forget what happened the last two times, once with Detective Delon(1) who tried to shoot him and the other with Jack Connery(2) who… yeah…

Kaito swallowed thickly and took out the gem to inspect it and distract himself from dark thoughts. He was still Kaitou KID and could not afford to lose his poker face, even if no one was watching.

The emerald shone with brilliant green, sadly with no hint of red - unsurprisingly… Kaito couldn't even feel disappointed about it anymore. He just pocketed the gem and took another look around the roof. As surprising as it was, it seemed he was still alone.

He shook his head and hopped over the edge, deploying his glider. He closed his eyes for a brief moment and sighed heavily. Because of Saguru's behavior, he skipped a lot of sleep, making sure he was prepared for anything and now that the adrenaline has left him, he was feeling really tired.

He opened his eyes and allowed his gaze to drift over the brilliantly shining city. He usually loved flying in the sky, feeling like this was where he belonged. Just free and happy. Though now he couldn't really enjoy it fully. What could it have been that made Saguru act the way he did? Maybe it didn't have anything to do with the heist after all? Maybe it was something else? Was he leaving Japan? But he wouldn't go without telling them, would he? It was an unsettling thought… Not that Kaito liked Saguru particularly, definitely not. But he did get used to his presence and it's not like having him around to bicker with and annoy wasn't fun at all… Plus Aoko would be sad. And he couldn't have that.

As Kaito soared over the sky, he wondered about going to the detective's manor but it's not like KID had any reason to do it. Plus, with how tired he was getting he would be risking slipping with something and giving Saguru some proof. And it was far too late for Kuroba Kaito to be making a visit. So yeah, that wasn't happening. Then again, he probably didn't need to go anyway. He could simply call him as Kaito, right? Taunt the guy and ask if he failed again catching KID? That could work and it could give him a hint about where Saguru was.

Feeling satisfied, Kaito wanted to mentally pat himself on the back when suddenly there was a strange, flapping sound above him and his glider jolted, as if something had grabbed it. He nearly snapped his neck looking above him and felt his heart stop at the sight above him. The first thing he noticed were huge wings, covered in scales that were glittering like gold in the city lights shining from below. The creature was holding his glider, somewhat crushing it with its ivory claws. Its head, attached to the body on a long neck, was hanging above Kaito's, had a long snout and was the size of the boy's torso. As he was watching, the head tilted to the side, giving him a look of a golden eye. And then the creature grinned, presenting its huge and sharp teeth.

"Got you~" it growled menacingly.

Kaito's hands acted before he could think, slamming on the release button, detaching himself from the captured glider and sending the magician into a freefall. Headfirst. Without a parashoot in store.

Possibly, not his best decision ever…

The creature let out something between a shriek and a growl, making Kaito look towards it, losing his hat to the wind and he noticed the reptilian-looking thing nosediving after him. He quickly turned his gaze back to the fast approaching ground below him, thinking fast. Ending as a wet goop on the apartment building roof was not a pleasant perspective, though he wasn't sure if it wasn't better than whatever that thing behind him had in store for him. Frantically, he looked around searching for a solution. It didn't look like there was anything he could try and grab on. No larger buildings around him either. Just the one he was falling onto.

Because of the blasted detective, he anticipated somebody shooting at him, so after a long debate, he decided on wearing Kevlar for protection, despite that it limited his storage space on his person, so right now he was severely underequipped. On top of that, he used his grappling hook during the heist and thus, couldn't use it anymore. He cursed himself for not reeling it back on before flying off, but now it was too late to be sorry. All he had left was some sleeping gas capsules, a flash bomb, few flowers, handkerchiefs, his faithfull card gun, some extra cards and a mask. He didn't even have his cape to try and slow down his descent.

If things weren't bad enough, because of the new surge of adrenaline, lack of oxygen, stress and general fatigue, he was getting dizzy, making it hard for him to focus. And the roof was so close, there was no time left… He didn't dare to look up. At the last moment, he looked to the side, longingly wishing he could just continue soaring and go home… And he felt like he did, just before he blacked out.

Kaito stirred, as he heard several pebbles hitting a window and Aoko screaming her lungs out for him to get up already. He was laying on his stomach and tried to push himself upwards with a groan, only to discover his body protesting wildly. Right… He held a heist last night and obviously overdid it again. He frowned looking at his hands. He was still in his dress shirt and a quick look confirmed that he didn't take his pants off either, though the cape, jacket and hat were missing.

And didn't he remember falling..? He recalled the strange creature (dragon?) chasing him? He shook his head and sat on the bed, figuring that his mind mixed reality with a dream. He definitely should try getting more sleep, his stomach growled, reminding him that he should take care about eating better as well.

Aoko threw another rock "Bakaito! Get up already! We're going to be late for school!"

He hastily pulled the blanket off his bed to cover his shirt and opened the window only to shout back "I heard you already, Ahouko! Are you trying to break another window? Gimme a sec will you?" That said, he pulled the curtain, choosing to ignore her further comments.

Instead, he dropped the blanket and quickly unbuttoned his shirt and pants, while looking around the room for the rest of his attire. The gem wasn't in his pants pocket and if he remembered correctly, he took it with him home, so it should be in his breast pocket, in his jacket… Yet, it was nowhere in the room. He didn't have the time to look for it, so he just hoped that he left it in the KID room. He'd have to check after school. Dismissing it for later, he opened the hidden door to drop his pants and shirt behind it, before securing the lock. That done, he rushed to the bathroom for a quick shower.

Despite the rush he was in, he found it hard to move around quickly, not only were his muscles screaming at him but also his stomach. Which was weird, he thought while drying his hair. He did skip dinner last night, due to the heist, but he did have lunch and he usually handled hunger well. He dressed up into his school uniform and went to the kitchen to grab something to hopefully stop his stomach from twisting around and growling like a wild beast.

He felt a chill crawl up his spine as he recalled the sound the dragon made in his dream, unsure why it was so unsettling to him.

He shook his head and walked out of his house with a sausage in his mouth, nearly colliding with Aoko.

"What took you so long, Bakaito?" she frowned at him, "Jeez, you didn't even get a proper breakfast? You're hopeless without Aoko, aren't you?" She rolled her eyes and turned around, while Kaito was busy locking the door.

"Tch, give me a break, will you?" he complained after he managed to wolf down his rather sad excuse of a breakfast, "Watching yesterday's report on the heist gave me an idea for a trick~" he flashed a mischievous grin, while feverly thinking what he could use to make the lie believable "I had to try and make it work~"

She gave him a flat glare "So instead of sleeping, you were practicing all night?" she rolled her eyes at his widened grin, "At least Aoko hopes Bakaito didn't forget about the history test today." She snorted, hearing him groan.

"You know, you could be a good friend and at least show me your notes…" He grumbled. It's not like he forgot about the test, he just didn't have the time to learn for it because of the heist preparations. "I'll show you my new trick in return~"

She rolled her eyes and failed to hide a fond smile, as she reached into her bag and took out a sheet of papers, handing them to him. "You better be grateful…"

He grinned at her happily, "You're the best~" he reached for the notes, as his stomach picked that moment to complain again. He kept his poker face, hoping she didn't notice.

She snorted. "Aoko is not giving you her lunch."

"As if I wanted it!" He stuck his tongue out and picked up his pace, "Come on, we need to hurry" especially if he wanted to look through the notes and buy something to eat before school.

"Hey! Don't run!" She rushed after him, as they both hurried towards the school.

(1) This was a character who made an appearance in the 15th episode of Magic Kaito 1412 anime and Volume 1: Chapter 2 in the manga series. He was a famous european detective who was known for shooting criminals and he pretty much tried to kill KID (nearly shot him in the heart);

(2) This was a character who made an appearance in animated special episode called "Tears of Love for the Dark Knight" and Volume 4: Chapter 7-8. He was a policeman from Interpol with a hidden identity as a criminal called Nightmare, who forcibly teamed up with thiefs only to kill them later. His motive for doing this was to gather the money he needed for his son's life saving operation. He threatened and teamed up with KID but in the resolution, when he tried to kill Kaito he slipped and despite KID trying to save him, fell to his death, orphaning his son in the process.

Have you guys missed me~? As you might have suspected, I had been struggling with a few things in real life as well as a writer's block, which made it hard for me to continue my open stories. Worry not - I do intend to continue them but first, I wanted to start something new to help me combat my block. I intend to post two chapters a week, to make writing into a habit again. To make it easier, I already have a few chapters prepared, so hopefully I will succeed :-)
After I finish this story, I'll return to one of my older series to finish them.

As for now, I will be taking my leave - thank you for reading this chapter and I hope to see you in the next one~!
