Magical Fallout - The New World.
By
Dark Dragen.
Summary: We all know what happens in Fallout 1 and 2. In Fallout 1, we see the Vault Dweller coming out of Vault 13 to find a new water-purification chip seeing how the old one is beginning to malfunction and needs a new one if the Vault is meant to keep on working and the Vault Dwellers there could keep living there safe and sound. From there the Vault Dweller deals with many hardships and betrayal, as he saves his home and defeating the Master.
In Fallout 2, we play as the Chosen One, the grandchild of the Vault Dweller, who sets out from Arroyo, to search for a mystical device called Garden of Eden Creation Kit or G.E.C.K. A device that was believed to have mystical powers to make the failing village thrive once more. During the game, we see the Chosen One, like the Vault Dweller, facing many hardships and challenges before facing and defeating a great threat: The Enclave.
But what about how did the settlements like The Hub, Junktown and Shady Sands, just naming a few came to be? And how did some of the characters like, Richard Moreau become the master or how did Harold become a mutant? Sure we have summaries of their stories, but in this new story, we learn more about them and how the events from the last story, Magical Fallout - The Great War, changed things in this new world.
Read in the upcoming sagas, we find out how some of the settlements and characters came to be, and how the events from the last story changed things for some of them. Read, as the Vault Dweller and the Chosen One face new threats, challenges, and people. Will they become their canon selves, or will they become different people than the ones we know?
A New World Saga Summary: Years have passed since the Great War, and now that it is somewhat safe for people to travel thanks to lower radiation, it's time to rebuild. Read, as settlements get built and people discover new threats and how they deal with things. You'll also see how some of the characters that'll either help the Vault Dweller or become their enemy came to be.
Warnings: This story is mainly about the Apocalyptic World, where there are no rules or laws governing the world, so anything and everything you can think of can be suspected to be seen in this story. So be warned, if you got a faint heart or high morals, this story isn't for you. This is going to be a realistic version of Fallout.
Whilst no direct link to Harry Potter, there might be some mention of characters or creatures within this story. Same with Mass Effect, no direct link, but there might be some mention of the tech.
Disclaimer: For the main fandom of this story, I don't in any shape or form own Fallout, be it characters, places or items from Fallout, they are owned by Bethesda Softworks. Now, if you see anything from Harry Potter or Mass Effect, know that I don't in any shape or form own them they either belong to J. K. Rowling & the Warner Bros Pictures or belonged to BioWare. I don't even earn any money from this… Damn shame…
I don't own the Postman; it belongs to David Brin who wrote the book and Warner Bros who filmed the movie. I'm using this to set up the first few chapters to show how the Hub was created.
Chapter Summary: The year is 2093 where a lone wanderer by the name of Angus MacGill, travels the land by himself and his mule Bill, trading performances of long forgotten Shakespearean plays for food and water. But one day, Angus arrives in a settlement where he was forced to join a post-apocalyptic neo-fascist militia called Holnists, who wants to control the remaining settlements. The story idea is based on the movie The Postman.
(A New World Saga - Part 1)
Prologue.
The Birth of The Hub - Part 1!
28th of February 2093 - Oregon:
Angus MacGill is a thirty-year-old male who was travelling the post-apocalyptic world of the United States, more precisely Oregon. It had been about three years since he began his journey to travel the post-apocalyptic land of Oregon, before that he had spent thirteen years in a place called The Vault which was located under the Rocky Butte Natural Area. The Vault had high and middle-class societies.
He was only fourteen at the time, and Angus could remember it as it was yesterday. The place was in chaos for a while. For the first week, things weren't too bad, as there was a leader that was called an Overseer, Bethany Hughes, who meant to oversee things and make sure things were fine and such. But a week after the Great War, the Overseer suffered a heart attack due to a considerably poor diet and an even more considerable refusal to acknowledge her habitual taking of Mentats.
This void of leadership left the place in chaos for a while, arguments were started between the conservative and liberal factions as to who should lead the Vault with the Overseer dead. It took a month of chaos and arguments before they decided to fill the void by forming a ruling council, which consisted of a Director, Chief Engineer, Chief of Security, Head Medical Doctor, and the Head Steward. This wasn't to be a long-term deal, just long enough to stabilize what is going on in the Vault.
For the next thirteen years, that was how the Vault was run, by a ruling council body, where those who run it are voted by the other vault dwellers. There had to be at least two from conservative and liberal factions, as for the third person, the Director, it was whoever the vault dwellers wanted, sometimes it was a conservative and sometimes it was a liberal person.
Life there wasn't too bad, they were safe and sound, but as years passed, some wanted to leave the vault, of course, as they didn't want to be stuck in the place forever. But the hunters who left to find food reported back that it wasn't safe. Not only was the radiation in areas too high, but there were new creatures appearing that were too dangerous to deal with by those who can't fight. So, it was decided that no one other than the hunters would be allowed out of the vault.
Not that Angus, as he got an easy life. He was a L'Cie, one of the important ones some would say, as he had the ability to create illusions of people that he wanted. Because of this, the council wanted him to help with entertainment and set up plays for people to watch, so they wouldn't be bored. So, Angus looked up old plays that he could use, his favourite was plays from William Shakespeare. So, whilst he used his illusions to play out other plays, he mainly did plays from William Shakespeare.
But over the years, it got boring, he wanted to see the world outside, to see what it really was like. It didn't help that he wasn't a people person and he wanted to be left alone. The only reason he kept doing what he was, was mainly because he had nothing else to do, and if he wanted more than the basic rations, he needed to work. But getting out of the Vault was impossible unless he was a hunter, and although he knew basic fighting, he hated it. He didn't like hurting people; he preferred to run or hide from fights. He only learned how because everyone had to learn the basics just in case. Because of this, he didn't become a hunter.
However, one day when he was in the entrance hall when the hunters were returning to the vault with their latest hunt, the vault was attacked by mutated wolf-like creatures. In the chaos, Angus was able to sneak out of the vault and never to return. Not like he wanted to, there was no one there left for him. His father died whilst hunting for food, and his mother died from an unknown illness, they believed that she might have caught something from the food that was brought in from the outside. Whatever the case, after thirteen years of being stuck in the Vault 14, Angus was free and able to travel the land.
For the next three years, Angus travelled around Oregon.
MacGill quickly realized that this new world was nothing like the world that he used to know. Now, most of the land was destroyed, very few plants and trees survived and the plants that were around were new types. Some even attack you if you weren't careful, something that Angus never thought possible before outside the magical areas. Then there were animals and insects whilst most of them have been killed off, a few of them became mutated. A few of them weren't all that dangerous, but most of them were though.
Then, there were the people, whilst most of the population of the United States were killed off, it would seem the lucky few were able to survive by living in areas that the bombs didn't hit. If you call it luck. For a few people who survived, they became what are called ghouls, and if they were really unlucky would become mindless and feral. But for others, some had some sort of physical mutation, be it a deformed hand or another body part. Some even gain some sort of psychic powers, a weaker version of L'Cie powers. So, whilst many seemed fine, there were a few who were mutated in some shape or form. Unfortunately, Angus needed to keep an eye out for riders, people who pick on the weak for fun or just to get things off them.
But still, although the world had changed a lot over the last thirteen years and had gotten more dangerous, Angus knew that if he had a chance to redo things and stay in Vault 14, he wouldn't change a thing. Whilst Vault 14 was safe to live in, it wasn't living, it was more of a prison. Stuck there unable to do much, unable to see the sun, the moon, even the sky, only seeing the same walls, door, people and the like every signal day. It was boring. So MacGill was happy to leave the place and travel the land, even if it was dangerous, he was free to do what he wanted.
Now, it wasn't long after leaving the vault that he found a mule wandering around, which he called Bill. As Angus and Bill travelled the land, Angus found that mules were very rare. During his travels, when he got into fights, he would use his powers to escape. But, when his powers didn't work for whatever reason, he would fight. Thankfully, it wasn't often. Now as for food, whilst he could hunt for some basic small animals and such, he still needed certain things, and not only vegetables, clean purified water and the like, but a soft bed and hopefully a female to join him.
So, whilst he preferred to be a lone wanderer, a nomad, or that's what he told himself, Angus knew that after at least a month of visiting a settlement, it was time to visit a settlement to get more supplies. As Angus thought back upon visiting his first few settlements, he thought about the hunters back at Vault 14. They didn't seem to bother mentioning them, for whatever reason. As Angus thought about it over time, he suspected that it was because they and/or the council didn't want people to learn that radiation is now more or less low enough for them to leave the vault. Not that he was bothered about it now, seeing how it meant that they wouldn't be looking for him unless they wanted him to tell the rest of the vault the truth.
This is where our story begins, a few days of travelling and Angus found himself close to a nearby settlement. "I know the rule, I made the rule." Angus said as he talked to his mule. This wasn't the first time that he did this. After being alone for so long, he began to talk to Bill as if he was real and as if the mule talked back to him. "Avoid civilization at all cost. But the thing is we need food and other supplies." He told Bill, who made some whining sounds, as he made sure that the mule and himself were clean. "What are you worried about? All you have to do is stand there and watch. I'm the one who has to make sure the illusions act the right way, make sure I don't mix up with another play."
After making sure that he and Bill were presentable, Angus made his way into the settlement. As he did, he knew that with his experience with settlements, he had to be careful, as anything could happen. A few settlements were full of ruffians, who were ready to rob you in your sleep, which they did with Angus. They believed that with the world as it is now, they could do whatever they wanted. As there were no laws or a governing body to stop them.
Then there were a few rare settlements that allowed the men to fuck any females that they wanted, even from the age of seven or so and upwards. They believed that to rebuild the world, they needed women to give birth to children as soon as possible. So, these settlements would sell the females to men to be fucked and get pregnant. Once pregnant, they would be protected and cared for, but once they give birth and healed up, they would be sold again.
Thankfully, not all settlements were like this though, most of them were just trying to get by with their daily life, not looking for any trouble. These were the ones that Angus went to when he had, to buy supplies and equipment. Even a few rare livestock.
Thankfully, this village seemed to be one of those who were trying to get by day by day, not looking for trouble. As he entered the settlement, Angus realized that this must have been some sort of small settlement of its own, as there were some old pre-war buildings here and these people just built upon it to make it their own.
Now, as he got to the entrance of the settlement, the four guards there stopped him, and one of them asked, "Stop stranger, what's your reason for being here?"
"I'm a wanderer travelling the lands," explained Angus, "I'm here to trade with your leader for food, water and supplies and if possible, a bed for the night."
"And what are you trading with?" asked the guard, "You don't seem to have much on you."
"That's between me and your leader." Angus told the guard, "Please take me to them so we can talk."
"Mayor Thompson doesn't just talk to anyone." the guard said, not trusting this outsider.
Just then, an elderly woman wearing some basic post-apocalyptic clothing and a hat came up to the guards, and asked the guard who was talking to Angus, "What's going on here Jimmy?"
"Nothing Mayor Thompson," explained Jimmy, "This wanderer says he wants to trade, but he hasn't anything to trade with."
"Is this true wanderer?" asked the mayor, not believing that a man would come here without something to trade with.
"No, ma'am, I'm willing to trade myself for food, water and supplies and if possible, a bed for the night." explained the wanderer," You see, I'm a L'Cie performer, I've got the ability to create illusions where I can create plays for people to watch."
"Hmm, interesting." hummed Thompson, as she thought it over, "Tell me, how good are your illusions."
"Unless you touch them or something goes through them, you wouldn't even know they were illusions." explained the illusionist.
"Very interesting," admitted the mayor, already thinking up a trade the two can make, before asking "how many plays can you do in a day?"
"It depends on how much detail I put into a play." Angus informed the elderly woman, "As long as it's only people, I can do two, maybe three plays as long as they are short ones. But, if you want it so that they seem to really be on the stage, as in having the forest, with the plants, trees, animals, and the like on the stage, only one play. And depending on how long the play is, I might need to take a short break to recover my energy."
"Very interesting, tell me, what plays do you know?"
"Well, I know of lots, most of William Shakespeare…" began Angus, before the mayor stopped him by asking, "You really know William Shakespeare? Do you know Macbeth?" She never thought she would see another Shakespeare's plays again, as most people don't know it and those who did, couldn't act nor knew how to teach acting. So, for someone to come here and do one of Shakespeare's plays, she was willing to tradeto see it. If the wanderer was telling the truth. She would pay extra if he could do Macbeth, seeing that was her favourite back in the day.
"Yes, I know Macbeth." admitted Angus, "Although, I'll also admit that I do make a few mistakes here and there, but I hope that my illusions would make up for those slight mistakes."
"I see, let's talk." said the mayor, as she let the wanderer into the settlement, although the guards were unsure about this, but, if the mayor allowed them in, who were they to say otherwise?
o0OoO0o
It has been about two hours since Angus arrived at this settlement. During that time, the wandering illusionist was allowed to get something to drink and look around as to what he might need. He wasn't allowed to get anything until he did the first half of the Macbeth play, this was to stop him from running after getting what he wanted. Looking at the stuff, apart from the food and some clean purified water, he found a new mixing medicine bowl, some medicine and some water and mask filters, water testing kits and a few other things that he wanted.
After looking around, Angus used his illusion abilities to play out Macbeth, with his illusions making it that there are forests, bedrooms and the like to make the people there think that it really was happening in front of them. Then after about an hour and a half, of doing the play, Angus took a break seeing how his illusions were beginning to fade on their own, meaning he needed to take a break.
This is where we find Angus, walking around the village, as agreed with the mayor, he was getting the things he needed for his travels. As he was walking around, he heard people admitting how they were enjoying the play and how much his illusions seemed to be so real. The major who was among a few who knew more about Macbeth than anyone else there admitted that even with a few mistakes here and there, enjoyed the play.
"The children have never heard Shakespeare before." admitted the mayor as they entered the market area and saw the children playing with Angus's mule.
"They still haven't." admitted Angus, "I made it a bit more child friendly for them."
"I know." smiled the mayor knowingly, "Anyway, let me get you the food I promised you."
Here, the mayor led the illusionist to the cooking area, where Angus saw a huge stove made from cinder blocks and a cooking pot on top of it. Nearby, there was an old car that was being used as a barbecue, the bonnet was the grill, the boot was where they kept the plates, equipment and the like, whilst instead of the car was where they kept the ingredients.
As Angus was deciding what to eat, the mayor said, "Listen, if you keep doing a great job with your play, I believe that a few women might be interested in staying with you tonight."
Angus was interested in this, but before he could think or say anything about this, a bell began to ring out, and a guard called out, "Holnists! Holnists are coming!"
The Holnists were the main militia in Oregon, they keep the riders at bay and kept the settlement safe. If you could call it safe. As it was well known that the Holnists take people from the settlements to rebuild their arms if they were out of people or need more for whatever reasons. So, seeing them here, Angus wanted to get his things and leave and hide so that they don't find him.
"They hardly kill anyone lately. Just take a woman sometimes. Or, take a man or two." said a man behind him.
"It's okay. If we give them food and supplies, they normally leave us alone. All the settlements do this." the mayor said as she saw how worried Angus was.
"Well, I'd just as soon not give them anything of mine." the wandering illusionist told the mayor as he gathered his things, then turning to his mule, and put his things on Bill. He then said to the mule, "Let's find the back door, Bill."
As Angus was trying to sneak out of the settlement, forty Holnists in orange and black uniforms ride in. Armed with mostly pistols and rifles. Some carried bows, knives, spear guns and swords. Normally, he would use his illusion ability to hide, but thanks to the play he did not long ago, he knew he couldn't put up a decent illusion to hide himself and Bill, so, he had to carefully sneak out of the settlement.
As Angus was sneaking from house to house, he spotted who was leading these Holnists, it was none other than their leader General Bethlehem. He was tough, smart, and merciless with style. He was a man known was not missing a thing. So, for good reason, Angus was worried when he heard the damn General call out, "What are you doing there?"
The wanderer thought he was caught, but luck was on his side, Bethlehem wasn't talking to him at all. Instead, the General was looking down from his horse at children playing an impromptu game of "Birnam Wood."
The children stopped and stare at their feet. Bethlehem affects a 'kindly' smile to accompany his gentler tone, "I asked, what are you doing?"
"It's just a game, General Bethlehem." said the mayor as she rushed over to the General, "Something they saw in a play recently. No harm in it." As a man tried to take the children away from the General.
"Wait a minute!" the General called out to them, stopping the children from leaving, "A play you say? Show me. It's all right, children, show me." the General told the children softly.
"Arm, arm yourselves! No running from the witches!" a brave boy acted in one part of the play.
"Shakespeare, is it?" the General asked in surprise, seeing how very few knew of him and his plays, "Well, I'm sorry I missed it."
"You should know, sir, we were unable to gather nearly as much game as we would like." explained a man that appeared next to the mayor.
"Really? But you had time for a play?" asked Bethlehem.
"It's not what you think General Bethlehem." the mayor tried to explain, hoping that the General wouldn't punish them for this, "They run into some aggressive mutated bears, ones that have some sort of scales along their back and a few two-foot spikes popping up along their spine."
"Captain Idaho?" asked the General, then a man came up and said, "Yes General?"
"Have you heard of these bears with scaled backs and spikes popping up along their spine?" asked Bethlehem.
"I heard one of our men say something about this before dying," admitted the captain, "I was going to make a report when we got back to headquarters and ask to send out a search part to learn more."
"I see, we'll have to investigate more about them once we get back to Headquarters.," admitted Bethlehem, interested to learn more about this new threat. Then calling out for everyone to hear, he said, "I came today. I'm here to take three conscripts from each town. They will have the honour of serving in the Holnist Army until such time as I see fit." Then, turning to the mayor he said to her, "Three men. Do you suppose you could do that?"
The mayor nods in acquiescence, knowing it wasn't a question but a statement, one that if she said no to, the General would destroy the village. Anyone that survived, men would be forced into their army and the women would be used for their fun. So, she knew that she had no option but to allow this.
Bethlehem looks at the captain and nodded at him. The captain steps up and addresses the town.
"All men between fifteen and fifty and of suitable ethnic foundations are required to show themselves now." the captain informed the settlement.
With that, the Holnist soldiers fan out, prodding any likely or unwilling candidates forward.
What none of them noticed to this point was that Angus had been moving around the settlement unnoticed, that he was behind them. As people were being gathered and taken to Bethlehem, some of the Townspeople cast him a furtive glance as he made his way toward the open courtyard and, ultimately, the gate out of town.
Now, it wasn't long before three unwilling conscripts were hustled before Bethlehem. He looked over the first person, a black man, he was tall and strong, something that the General liked and so called out, "Acceptable!"
"Sir?" the captain asked confused, wondering why his General would allow a black man into their ranks.
"I said acceptable, Captain." Bethlehem told his captain, leaving no room for disagreeing with him.
Then looking over the next person, nothing like the man before him, a teenager who was thin. But there was something that caught the General's eye and so he said, "Need some meat on you, but I like an impressionable mind. Acceptable!" This made the boy's family cry, not wanting him to go to war for these bastards.
The third person was someone you can say was an innocuous man. But as Bethlehem stares hard at the man's olive skin and traces a finger over the bump on the man's nose. He realized that this man was of Chinese descent. Realizing this, he called out, "Mongoloid. Unacceptable." He couldn't trust someone of Chinese descent, seeing how he like many before him, believed that China was behind the end of the world.
Hearing this, two of the soldiers shoved the man back into the crowd.
Then, as this happened, one of the kids who was playing Birnam Wood allowed themself a tiny smile when he sees that Angus might make it. Angus tried to tell the boy not to do this, by making hand signals to stop.
"I want pure blood. Someone like…" began Bethlehem, as he wanted one more man from this village to join his army. When he saw the boy waving, he turns to see the object of the boy's attention and spots Angus leaving out the front gate. "That man." the General called out as he saw the man trying to leave.
Upon hearing their General's wish, Idaho and another soldier rushed to get Angus. The illusionist tried to escape before they could get to him but failed, the men were too fast. "Listen, you don't understand…" Angus tried to talk his way out of this. The problem was that they weren't trained to listen to explanations, but to follow orders, so they grab him.
"You're required to show yourself." Idaho informed Angus.
"But I'm not with these people. I'm just passing through. I -" began Angus, once again trying to talk his way out of this, not wanting to join anyone's army. But once again, it led nowhere, instead of listening to Angus trying to talk his way out of joining the army, Idaho silences him with a rifle butt to the head.
With the hit being so hard, Angus blacked out. The last thing that he heard was Idaho say, "Take the mule."
To Be Continued!
Author's Note: Here ends the first chapter of the sequel Magical Fallout - The Great War. I hope that you enjoyed the prologue and how I'm using The Postman to have Angus create The Hub. If you enjoyed the story, please let me know, would love to hear your feedback on the story, as it'll help me make it better. I have a few ideas on how to change The Postman to help me create the Junktown along with The Hub, but if you have any ideas about what else I could add between now and to when The Hub is created, please let me know and I see if I can add it to the story.
Now, whilst I have a few ideas as to what is going to happen from now to the point where Fallout 1 begins, I have sixty-eight odd years to fill with backstories. So, if there are any characters or settlements that you would like me to expand on, please let me know and I see if I can add them to the story. I won't promise anything, other than I'll try and add what you want into the story.
Just so you know which characters or places I'm going to write about, here's the list:
Places:
The Hub.
Junktown.
Shady Sands.
People:
The Master.
Harold.
Aradesh.
Killian Darkwater the 1st (The Founder of Junktown, not grandson.)
So you know, any character or places from Fallout 2, I'll be writing about them when I start the Fallout 2 Saga. The only time I might mention a character from Fallout 2 is if they were already in Fallout 1 or could have been. So, if you know of any characters that could have been around in Fallout 2, I'll try and mention them during the Fallout 1 Saga.
