A/N: This idea has been living rent free in my head for over a year. It will have four parts, one for each of the seven and their significant other. Also I'm on a posting high right now. I took a mental health break for like, a year and a half, so I've had lots of time to think up stories.
I honestly don't even know if anyone even reads these notes, but whatever. Please enjoy!
Disclaimer: I don't own Percy Jackson
Hazel winced every time the water from the River Lethe came over the bank. Being a child of the Underworld and an escort to those hoping for a new life, she had seen people cross it before.
She just never thought that she would immerse herself in the current.
Hazel had never intended to try for rebirth. She'd already technically lived twice, and living a whole other life seemed daunting. But one day, Frank had said he wanted to live again, that he wanted to go to the Isle of the Blessed, where his mother was.
Hazel couldn't really deny him that. But she knew she didn't want him to go alone. So after intense deliberation and anxious conversation with nearly everyone she knew, Hazel found herself appealing to her father for rebirth.
"Zhang, Frank and Hazel." The voice belonged to a yawning man holding a clipboard. He caught their eyes and waved them over.
Frank and Hazel's guide, a kind woman named Ariel, nudged them forward.
"Go on," She said brightly, "it's not bad!" Hazel frowned. She wouldn't call losing her life's memories 'not bad.' She wished it wasn't a requirement to have one's memories taken. She had brought this up with her father several times, actually, but every time he shot her down. It was too dangerous, he had always said.
Holding hands, Frank and Hazel walked towards the man with a clipboard. He looked down at them with raised eyebrows.
"Okay," he said with another yawn, "this is how it's gonna work. You go first," he pointed at Frank, "and you go after." He gestured to Hazel. "Your new guide will help you with the final steps after you've crossed," His face broke into a somewhat cruel smile, and he extended his hand toward the river. "Have fun!"
Fun was not the word Hazel would use, but she moved forward past the security gate, and Ariel smiled.
"Go ahead, dears, it will be okay," She said. You have your IDs, so your new guide will be able to find you." She shook their hands one last time and waved. "It's been a pleasure working with you. Enjoy your next life!"
And she hurried away, presumably to meet her next client.
Frank took Hazel's hand and squeezed it.
"Ready?" He asked. Hazel shook her head.
"Absolutely not," She said. "I don't want to forget you."
"It'll be fine," Frank said. "We get our memories when we get back, remember?"
Hazel shook her head.
"That doesn't make it any easier for me, Frank," She said. "I can't imagine a life without you in it." Frank smiled at her reassuringly.
"Me either, to be honest," he said. "But we have to believe it's going to be okay. And think." He cupped her cheek with his hand. "One step closer to The Isle of the Blessed."
Hazel looked at him carefully.
"You mean one step closer to your mom." Sadness crossed his face as he let his hands fall to his side.
"You have to understand, Hazel," He said earnestly, "I want to stay with you. I really really do. But my mom..." he broke off and shook his head. "The only way I can see her again is if..."
Hazel did understand. But she didn't like it.
Apparently, his most recent life had been his second one. And to be with his mom again, he needed to complete one final life. He was so close, Frank had said. He needed to see her.
"I know," Hazel said. "I understand. I'm just really going to miss you."
Frank nodded.
"So will I," he said, squeezing her hand. "But it's going to work out. I promise." Hazel searched his eyes and smiled sadly.
"Ever the optimist," she said. Frank smiled back at her.
"Of course," he replied. He leaned down and pressed his lips against hers. "I love you," he said softly. Hazel felt tears gathering in the corners of her eyes.
"I love you too," She said.
And Frank stepped into the water.
She sharply inhaled, taking a step nearer to the river's edge. Every instinct within her told her to run the other way, to turn back.
"Frank," She called out desperately. He turned at his name and gave her a small, bewildered smile. Already he was forgetting, she could tell. There was confusion in his eyes as he said her name warily.
"Hazel, it's okay. Take my hand."
Hazel hesitated in fear, watching recognition in his eyes fade away. Then, with her heart breaking, she slid her hand into his and followed him into the water. And piece by piece, her memory flaked away until two completely different people emerged from the current.
A/N: Part one is done! I should probably have part two up by tomorrow. I work at a summer camp so my schedule is all wonky at the moment. Anyway, please leave a review, and have a wonderful day!
