But when they die, their bodies come back to life with a voracious appetite for living flesh!

Rick, who is now awake, is on a mission to find his family. But he can't help but be attracted to the young Japanese woman that has saved his life.

Can Rick go back to his wife knowing that he is now in love with someone else, or will he follow his heart? Read and find out.

Kagome couldn't believe this was happening to her again. Kagome thought for sure that when she came back from the Feudal Era, her adventures would be over, that she wouldn't be in life or death situations anymore. But no, here she was on the run again but this time from the dead. And there was no Inuyasha or Sesshomaru to help her.

Kagome ducked down an alley in the small town of King's County, Georgia. What was she doing there? Nothing in particular. Kagome had decided to explore the rest of the country during her summer vacation after she graduated from medical school, and this was as far as she got when the world fell apart. She had been holding up in a house for a while, but her supplies were running low, and Kagome needed to leave to refresh her supplies.

Kagome now had six or seven of those things chasing after her. She had noticed that if they were freshly turned, they moved a lot faster. Not that Kagome was in the alley, she had enough time to summon her bow and arrows. Holding out her hand, her bow appeared along with her quiver of arrowed. Kagome quickly knocked a bow, charged with her spiritual powers, and fired the minute the creatures came around the corner. And just like the demons from the past, these creatures turned to ash. Kagome's heart clenched as she watches the creatures destroyed. She knew she shouldn't feel bad, but those things were humans once, and it went against her training as a priestess and a doctor not to help them, even though Kagome knew there was nothing she could do for those things but send them to the afterlife. Kagome quickly said a prayer and moved on.

Now that Kagome was in the clear, she had enough time to get her bearings. Kagome looked around and noticed that she had gotten chased close to the King's County Hospital. Nodding to herself, Kagome decided to take a look inside and see if there were any supplies still inside. Slowly, Kagome crept her way inside the hospital and flared her aura to see if the building had any of those creatures inside. She had noticed that they gave off an aura that her spiritual powers could pick up, and for the most part, she could avoid them. But this time, Kagome hadn't been paying attention.

After flaring her aura, Kagome noticed that there was a large concentration of them on the second floor, but it seemed that they were trapped, so she wasn't worried. Kagome suddenly gasped when she felt the aura of a living person on that same floor. The life force was faint, but the spirit was very strong. Kagome knew that she could not leave this person alone and helpless so, she carefully made her way to the second floor.

When Kagome arrived on the second floor, she saw the devastation that the military had done and all the dead bodies that had been left behind. Seeing the bodies didn't faze her since living in the Feudal Era Kagome had seen much worse. Slowly, Kagome crept towards the hospital room that the person was in. She noticed that someone had been smart enough to block the door, quietly, Kagome moved the gurney that was in the way and walked into the room.

She found on the lying on the bed a man that was still hooked up to an IV that had long since run out and a heart monitor. He had a bandage on his torso that looked like it hadn't been changed in weeks. Kagome carefully removed the bandage and was relieved to see that there was no infection and that it was a bullet wound, No problem, Kagome had healed worse.

Kagome went back to the door and locked it, just in case then went back over to the man. She picked up his chart and found out his name was Rick Grimes, a sheriff's deputy, injured in the line of duty. Kagome nodded then walked to the side of the bed, putting both hands over the wound; she concentrated all of her healing abilities on the injury. Her hands began to glow pink, and slowly the wound started to heal. Kagome poured a little more power into Rick so that his muscles would not be so atrophied when he woke up, which should be any minute. Kagome removed the IV and unhooked the heart monitor

When Kagome had finished, she went to the bathroom and filled a pitcher full of water for Rick. She came out and waited for him to wake up. Slowly Rick's eyes started to open; he began talking about a vase that was sitting near his bed. Rick looked around confused and asked for someone named Shane. Then he spotted Kagome.

"Who, who are you? Where's Shane?" Rick asked, getting agitated.

"Shh, it's okay, I'm doctor, Kagome Higurashi, Mr. Grimes. I'm here to help you."

Rick visibly calmed down, "Where's Shane?"

"There was no one in this room when I came in. It would seem that you've been in a coma for quite some time."

"How long have I been in a coma," Rick asked.

"From the last chart entry, at least two months," Kagome informed him.

"Have you seen my wife," Rick asked.

"No, Mr. Grimes, I only arrived today. There are some things that I need to explain to you. A lot has happened in these last two months."

"What's happened?"

Kagome then went on to explain to Rick what was going on that a fever had struck out of nowhere that was rapidly killing people and that those that died from the illness, their bodies would become reanimated and would feed on the living. At first, Rick didn't believe it, but when he saw the serious look on Kagome's face, he had no choice but to accept the possibility that she was telling the truth.

By the time Kagome had finished her story, Rick had drunk three pitchers of water and now felt good enough to get out of bed. Kagome searched his closet to see if there were any clothes for him while he went to the bathroom to pee, but didn't find anything but a pair of slippers. She grabbed another hospital gown and gave it to Rick when he came out of the bathroom to use as a robe, and he put on the slippers.

"I need to get to my house; I need to check on my family. Will you help me, Dr. Higurashi?"

"You can call me Kagome."

"Then please call me Rick."

"Yes, Rick, I'll help you to your house, but don't be surprised if they're not there."

At hearing this, Rick became alarmed, "Why, where else would they be?"

"They may have left for Atlanta; there was a large refugee center there. It was said to be protected by the military."

"Why aren't you there?" Rick asked.

"I was on my way there when my tire blew; I had to take refuge in a house for a while, gather some supplies, then make my way there."

Kagome didn't want to tell him that she didn't think that it was safe there and that she preferred to be on her own. Large crowds would attract hordes of those creatures. It was the same with demons.

Rick nodded, "We should go then."

"We will, but first, let me get some medical supplies. Stay here; I'll be right back. I already know where the dispensary is, let me load up and then we can leave."

"Alight."

Kagome walked out of the room; she went straight to the dispensary and took everything that was there. Luckily she had her trusty yellow backpack and was able to fit everything in it and only filled it halfway. Now that she had enough supplies to last a few months, Kagome went back to Rick's room, and they carefully left the hospital. When they got outside, and Rick saw the devastation, he couldn't believe his eyes. He had thought Kagome when she told him what had happened, but it was entirely different, seeing it with your own eyes.

On the loading dock, Rick saw the dead bodies piled up of all the people who had been shot in the head. They were at least in body bags, but that did nothing for the stench. Rick was glad that his stomach was empty, or else he would have vomited. It was all so surreal, how could the world have gone to shit in such a short time? Rick was having a hard time wrapping his mind around the idea that everything he knew was gone and that now the dead walked the earth.

"I know, it's different when you see it for yourself," Kagome said.

All Rick could do was nod. As they made their way up the hill and saw the remnants of the National Guard's base of operations, Rick decided that they should see if there were any guns around that they could take. After a thorough search, they found only two pistols on the bodies of two soldiers that had shot themselves after being bitten and partially consumed.

Kagome and Rick found a car nearby that still had the keys in the ignition and drove to Rick's house, and it was just as Kagome had said, the house was abandoned. At first, Rick started freaking out, thinking the worst had happened until he noticed that all the pictures and albums were missing, and he knew that they had escaped safely to Atlanta.
