Kara doesn't keep secrets, including things she would've preferred to take to her grave. So, Kara decided to never keep secrets. It made things easier. And then Lena Luthor moved into the large penthouse four blocks away from Kara's apartment. That meant Kara withheld a piece of crucial information when her sister asked why Lena Luthor was in National City. Everyone threw out their ideas, assumptions, and conspiracies, and Kara listened to it all with feigned interest. Her phone vibrated against her boot, and Kara slipped it out unnoticed. She opened the message and stiffened before replacing her phone in its secret holder. Kara stood and excused herself, saying Cat needed her, and she flew away before anyone could press for more details. Kara didn't bother changing out of her suit. Cat knew who she was. When Cat noticed her on the balcony, just out of sight from the main floor, she pressed a button under her desk and made the office windows opaque. Kara entered the room and sat down tentatively on the couch, trying her hardest not to fidget under the steely glare of her boss/friend.
"When were you going to tell me?" she asked.
"About?"
Cat rolled her eyes and pushed back from her desk. She stalked over to the couch and patted Kara on the cheek. It was almost a slap, but it was soft enough that Cat wouldn't break her hand.
"You're married," she hissed.
Kara slumped forward and said, "Yes."
"To a Luthor?"
"Walsh," Kara corrected. "I married Lena Walsh four years ago in Metropolis."
"Details, Kiera. You know I need them to survive."
Kara snorted and gestured for Cat to sit down beside her. She stretched out her legs and reclined against the cushions.
"Let's see, about five-ish years ago, I was on an artifact recovery mission with Diana Prince."
"Of course, you know Wonder Woman," Cat said dryly.
"She is a family friend," Kara chuckled. "But I avoided meeting the others on the trip. I was there as an assistant, nothing more and nothing less. But my first night there, I couldn't sleep. I snuck out of the tent to walk around the woods. I just wanted to find somewhere quiet to layout and look at the stars. The camp was so loud. I found this little cliff area maybe half a mile away, and there she was." Kara's eyes glazed over, and she smiled. "Lena was sitting on the edge, looking at the stars, and I saw something catch in the light. She'd been crying, and I walked right up to her and asked what was wrong. Lena just broke and told me that her brother was going to prison for the rest of her life because he failed to try and kill Superman. She told me everything in these heartbreaking sobs, and part of me wondered if I should leave. Lena was a Luthor, and my cousin always said that the Luthor family was evil. But there was Lena, crying her eyes out and wondering how she could ever atone for her brother's sins. I knew then that Lena was nothing like her family.
"It kind of snowballed from there. We talked all night about everything we could think of. She told me about her birth mother, I told her about Krypton, and I had to reassure her several times that my anger toward Lex had nothing to do with her. Lena gave in after the twentieth time, and we fell asleep in the woods. Diana found us the next morning. She was pissed, rightfully so, that we vanished from the mission. But then she told us that if we wanted to be alone, we had to tell someone first. For six months, Lena and I grew closer and closer until it came to ahead. I told her I loved her approximately six months, three weeks, and four days into our makeshift relationship. And we made love in this beautiful bed and breakfast in Carlingford that same day. But the mission was coming to an end, and Diana told us it was time to return to the States. I, um, I ended up following Lena to Metropolis. I lied to my family and said that I was spending more time with Diana even though I lived secretly with Lena. We spent a year together without anyone knowing. And then she had to spend more time at Luthor-Corp, and Alex needed me here. I told her I didn't want anyone else, and she blurted out that we should get married. So, we did."
Kara adjusted the sleeve on her suit and shook out her arm, revealing a simple gold band with the initials LW in small print. You'd have to have enhanced vision to see it, hence why Kara designed it.
"I talk to her every day, and she calls me whenever she sees the news. The separation has been hard, but I fly out to see her on special days. I'm as in love with her as I was the day I met her all those years ago in Ireland," Kara said softly.
"So, I take it you had no idea she was coming here?" Cat asked.
"No," Kara laughed. "But I am not surprised. Lena does things her way, and I have long learned to go with the flow. How did you know I was married, anyway?"
"Because Little Luthor just called on an encrypted line and told me to stop treating her wife like some kind of errand girl. You are, and I quote, a real journalist with the power to change the world. End quote."
Kara blushed and said, "She gets protective of me."
"That may be, but she is also correct." Cat scoffed and made her way back to her desk. "Your first assignment is to break why Lena Luthor is in National City. What is she up to? Why here, and why now? Ask the good questions, Kiera. Once the interview is finished, you are done for the day. Understood?"
"Seriously?" Kara exclaimed.
"When do I ever make a joke at the expense of journalism?" Cat asked, frowning.
Kara jumped up and stopped briefly to hug Cat before flying from the office. Cat allowed herself a small smile before pressing the button and making her windows transparent again.
Jess waved Kara into the office before she ever introduced herself. Kara paused, confused, and Jess picked up her tablet. She tapped a few buttons and turned the screen around. Kara scowled at the picture. It was them at their private wedding where only Diana, Jack, Sam, and Ruby (they needed a flower girl) were in attendance. Kara had icing all over her nose and cheeks, and Lena had just whispered in her ear about their honeymoon plans. It was an awful picture that Kara wished Lena would erase from existence.
"I told her to delete that," she said.
"Has Miss Luthor ever done something she had no intention of doing?" Jess asked.
Kara pursed her lips and said, "You are much better than the last one."
"I have been working with Miss Luthor since before the move. Would you like me to tell her you are here?"
"No, don't worry about it. Has my wife eaten?"
"She had me place an order at her favorite Chinese restaurant fifteen minutes ago."
"Did you happen to order-
"Extra potstickers?" Jess finished. "Yes."
"Well, did you also order-
"A double-cheeseburger extreme combo from Belly Burger? Yes. I am good at my job."
Kara whined and went into the office, ignoring Jess' laughter. Lena had her back turned on the phone, and Kara closed the door behind her. She took that time to take in her wife, realizing they hadn't seen each other in five months. She'd grown her hair out more, straightened it, and there were tiny indentations from where she'd tied it in a ponytail. Lena's power suit was in full effect, and Kara was glad Lena kicked off her heels. There was no possible way to have a conversation with her wife whenever she wore those heels. Kara went toward the massive glass windows in the office and closed the curtains as Lena spoke in rapid Italian to whoever was on the other line. Kara cocked her head, listening to the city, and found it relatively quiet. There were things the police could handle, so Kara removed her earpiece and turned it off. She took down her hair and went over to Lena's decanter. Scrunching her nose at how much was already gone, Kara poured a glass and dropped three ice cubes inside. Putting the decanter back in place, Kara walked the glass to her wife, and Lena grabbed it distractedly. Kara smiled and went to the door seconds before Jess knocked. Jess passed her the mountain of food Lena ordered.
"I canceled the rest of her meetings. Miss Luthor needs a break from the move."
"Is the lab open?"
"Yes?"
"Make sure it is available. If Lena has no meetings, she will want to be in the lab," Kara explained.
"Oh, of course. I will see that it is ready."
"Thanks – uh, crap. I did not get your name."
"Jessica, but I prefer Jess."
"Cool. It is a pleasure to meet you."
"Same to you. Enjoy your lunch," Jess lowered her voice to a whisper, "Mrs. Zor-El."
Kara winked and closed the door. When she turned around, Lena had a new glass and no phone.
"Well, hello, darling. What a pleasant surprise."
"Your sarcasm could use a bit of work, Miss Luthor," Kara said, setting the food on the table. "Come here. I know you had a cup of coffee for breakfast."
"How would you know? You weren't there."
"No, but I know you were stressed from the move. You can't eat when you're stressed. So, come here and eat."
"Ordering me around already? We haven't even gotten to the ten-year mark."
Kara pointed to the couch, and Lena pouted. She came over and sat down.
"For the record, I ordered this food," she said.
"In hopes that I would eat most of it and pretend like you weren't stuck on the same plate of Kung Pao chicken."
"You're in a mood."
"Why didn't you tell me you were moving here?"
"It was a surprise," Lena said, shrugging. "And then it became a PR nightmare because, of course, the new Luthor moving into National City meant Supergirl was in danger. Too bad the media doesn't know that the only thing Supergirl is in danger of is sleeping on the couch because she forgot to separate the whites from her cape. Again. All of my white sheets are now pink, Zor-El."
"My cape was wrapped up in the sheets because someone ripped it off me the last time I saw her. And I'm going to need that cape back," Kara said, eating a potsticker.
"You can get it this evening."
Kara inclined her head in agreement, and they ate in silence. Eventually, their positions moved, and Lena sat back against the arm of the couch with her feet in Kara's lap. Lena's phone continued to ring, yet the woman never made a move to answer it. If it was an emergency, they would call her cellphone. Kara's phone remained untouched on the coffee table. Kara finished her third helping and sat back. She started massaging Lena's feet out of habit.
"I am happy you're here, love," Kara said. "I've missed you."
"My moving here was more selfish than anything. Sure, I can do a lot of good here with L-Corp-
"L-Corp?"
"Ah, right. I haven't changed the name yet, but I will soon. Will you be at the ceremony?"
"Why do you have to have a ceremony?"
"Because I am a sucker for dramatics. Are you coming or not?"
"Duh."
"As my wife or my superhero enemy?"
"Both," Kara quipped. "Are you ready to come out?"
"I've been ready. You're the scaredy-cat." Kara ran the tip of her finger down Lena's arch, and her leg jerked upward. "Kara," she warned.
"What? Ticklish?"
"You know damn well I am," Lena huffed. "And I thought we could do a photoshoot and have Cat break the story herself. A Luthor and a Super: A Match Made In The Heavens."
"Someone's been thinking about this a lot longer than she's letting on," Kara teased.
"I want to have my moment in the limelight that isn't tainted by Lex."
"You can, baby. I'm only teasing. I'm down for a photoshoot and an interview, but with Cat only. I'm honestly supposed to be interviewing you on why you're here," Kara said. "It's my first story as a reporter."
"Good, she got my message then?"
"Yes, and please stop threatening my boss."
"No promises. My wife deserves the best," Lena said, handing Kara her empty container.
Kara grabbed it and put it next to the others.
"So, am I doing this as Kara Zor-El or Kara Danvers?"
"Who do you feel more comfortable the world knowing more about?"
Kara inclined her head and said, "I think being your Super wife would be a better story, and it could help keep my identity safe. It'll cause some issues down at the DEO-
"And with Alex."
"Plus, Eliza, Clark, and a whole list of people who think you want to kill me."
"Only in bed," Lena said. "Tell Cat she can get a two-for-one special if she lets you write my arrival story in the same magazine as our coming out as a couple."
"I think she'll be down with that, and she'll probably request any Luthor news to go to CatCo first."
"That sounds fair."
"I'll let her know when I go back. I have the day off from the office." Kara stretched and picked up Lena, putting her in her lap. Lena hiked up her skirt to straddle Kara's thighs comfortably and draped her arms on Kara's shoulders. Kara felt more at peace than she had in a long time. "Hi, baby girl," she whispered.
"Do not start something you cannot finish."
"Rao, you're so beautiful. How did I get so lucky?"
"By being a horrible sleeper," Lena teased. "Had you not found me that night-
"I would have found you on another."
Lena hummed and rested her forehead against Kara's.
"Your sister might kill me," she murmured.
"I know."
"Am I'm still worth it?"
Kara heard the insecurity in the question, the same one Kara had spent the last few years drilling out of Lena's head. And like each time, she answered, "You are worth everything. I will never stand down or step away from your side. You are my life, my love, and the only reason I still breathe. You are my source of sunshine and my greatest strength. No one in this world will ever take you from me."
Lena groaned and mushed her hand against Kara's face.
"Why couldn't you be an asshole?"
Kara chuckled and pried Lena's hand away from her face.
"Because you need someone who will love you with their actions, words, and thoughts at all times."
"Shut up," Lena grumbled.
"Tell me you love me."
"Fine, you needy alien. I love you."
"Did you mean to sound so un-enthused?"
Lena pressed her lips against Kara's and smiled as their cellphones rang in unison.
"That would be Sam."
"And that would be Alex."
Lena bent back to grab her phone while Kara stretched out to grab hers. Lena answered Sam's call first and went to the opposite side of the room, and Kara answered Alex's call. She went to the table that held her earpiece and put it back in her ear. Immediately, she heard screaming and gunfire. Kara sighed and took off her glasses. Her suit materialized over her skin, and she caught the tail-end of Alex's comment.
"…big ass alien tearing through the fucking city! Get your ass over here!"
"Sorry! I'll be there soon!"
Kara hung up and sped over to Lena. She kissed her deeply, a promise and an apology wrapped in one, and Lena tapped the crest on her suit as she pulled away.
"Come home to me," she said.
Kara kissed the bracelet around Lena's wrist as affirmation and leaned forward.
"I always will," Kara whispered.
So, in summary, Kara doesn't keep secrets. Except for the one time she does.
