*"Christmas won't be Christmas without any presents." grumbled Jo lying on the rug.
"It's so dreadful to be poor!" sighed Meg, looking down at her old dress.
"I don't think it's-" *
"Nan what are you doing?" asked Nat coming into her room.
A flash or blond hair turned his way. "It's Mrs. Jo's book. You know the one that creepy man, whom she's writing a book for, loved so much? "
"Where did you find it?"
"I was looking for some more medical book and I found it. Do you want to hear more of it?"
He nodded eagerly. 'Sure."
*"They are quite worn out; Marmee must have a new pair."
"I though I'd get her some with my dollar." said Beth.
"No, I shall." cried Amy.
"I'm the oldest," began Meg, but Jo cut in with a declared: "I'm the man of the family now Papa is away, and I shall provide the slipper, for he told me to take special care of Mother while he was gone."*
"Man of the family?" Dan spoke up. A crowd had formed in the room. "Mrs. Jo sounds like you Nan."
Nan nodded in agreement. "Hey Bess, this parts about your father."
*"I've loved you ever since I've known you, Jo-couldn't help it, you've been so good for me,-I've tried to show it, but you wouldn't let me; now I'm going to make you hear, and give me an answer, for I can't go on any longer."*
Nan stopped reading. 'Mr. Laurie was in love with Mrs. Jo?" she spoke, surprised. She turned to Nat. "Do you think he still loves her?"
"Of course not Nan." Bess said, her blue eyes filled with anger. "My father loves my mother."
"I never said he didn't, just maybe he loves them both."
Dan took a protective step in front of Bess. "Nan.,"
She shook her head. "Calm down. It was just an idea."
"Read some more." said Tommy.
"Alright,"
