"When was the last time you saw her?" Lisbon asked.
Paige Austin, the suspect, put a finger to her chin, looking deep in thought. "I'd say… the day before yesterday? She came over to my place."
Mollie Barrett, a chef at a local restaurant, had been found murdered in the kitchens. CBI was called in and now they were interviewing Barrett's best friend. Jane narrowed his eyes. For someone whose childhood friend was just murdered, Austin looked awfully calm.
"Did anything happen the last time she was here?" Lisbon questioned.
Austin thought for a bit more, then she nodded. "Yeah. She was talking about that boyfriend of hers."
"Boyfriend?" Lisbon echoed. "Her family said she wasn't seeing anyone."
Austin snorted. "Oh, she was, she just hides it. His name is Reuben Day. Anyway, Mollie was saying that she found out he was hiding something from her. She thought it was an affair."
"Cho, you got that name?" Lisbon called out, and Cho nodded. Lisbon turned back towards Austin.
Jane quickly got distracted and began making his way to the kitchen. A cup of tea sounded good.
It took a while for Jane to find where Austin kept her tea, but after he did, he quickly made it, humming lightly. As the tea brewed, Jane looked out the window and saw a flicker of movement near Austin's warehouse. He hesitated before picking up his now made tea and heading outside. He would just check it out quickly while Lisbon and Cho dealt with Austin.
After all, what could go wrong?
Reaching the entrance, Jane pressed against the door. It made a creaking sound as it opened and Jane walked inside, looking around. There were a lot of boxes here, covered almost completely in dust, and Jane fought the urge to sneeze as he accidentally kicked up a layer of dust which had then immediately assaulted his face. Continuing onward, Jane was surprised to see no sight of anyone inside.
Then the door locked.
Jane quickly turned towards the door and his eyes widened in surprise as he saw a man standing there. The man tackled him, and the teacup shattered on the floor, staining Jane's suit as he fell on top of the spilled tea. The man tried to cover Jane's mouth, but before he could, Jane shouted. "Lisbon! Cho! Mayday, mayday!"
Then his words were muffled as the man's hand covered his mouth and slammed his head into the ground. Jane made a pained noise, then fell silent.
"That woman said the CBI wouldn't come here," the man growled. "Fucking liar."
Jane stared at him, unable to speak.
"I go and sleep with her, just like she wants. I help her kill my bitch of a girlfriend, just like she wanted. And then she leads the police right towards me, huh?" the man hissed out.
Reuben Day, Jane realized. The victim's boyfriend.
"Listen here," Day hissed out. "I can't exactly go and have you reveal where I am. I'm already wanted by the police for some drug dealing I did a while ago, and now with this murder? I doubt I'm ever getting out of jail. So here's the deal. Either I keep you here for as long as I see fit, or I kill you right here and now. What do you think? Blink once for the first option, twice for the second option."
Jane just squeezed his eyes shut. I'd rather you do neither.
"I guess I'll just have to flip a coin then, huh," Day grunted. "Or I'll just do the easier option and kill you."
Before Day could do that, the warehouse door busted open. "Reuben Day, put your hands up where I can see them!" Lisbon shouted out.
Slowly, Day got off of Jane and lifted his hands. But as Cho came over, Day took off running, and Cho sprinted after him.
"Jane," Lisbon gasped, running over. "Are you okay?"
"Yeah," Jane choked out. "I am."
It was true. He was rattled and his head was in pain, but otherwise, he was okay. He was alive. He had survived.
