This story is a experiment based solely on my first campaign of Rome total war. That campaign had a lot of ups and downs and I'm not sure how to really summarize it. But I want to try to see how well my writing has come along in the time I have been away from . All my other stories will be on hold so I can see how far this Experiment will go. Be warned this story will contain a lot of death and violence in it and maybe some swearing as I go. Comments will be Apprechiated as I go threw out this process because i want to see how much better i have gotten. I want to be able to continue the other stories i have on hold after this test is over. I will not being going last 24 chapters in this story so I hope I can make it to the end. thank you for your patients.
Chapter 1: The Raging war.
The smoke that filled the sky was heavy and thick. The Battle cry's and screams could be heard far off into the distance as the sounds of the nature where none existent. The only noise that could be heard where the sounds of the war Elephants marching threw the fields of battle with the men on top and around screaming as they fought onwards. The scent of ash and blood in the air as the sounds of combat rage on around the field.
The scene itself was something out of your worst nightmares. Across the vast once green landscape you can see bodies littering the ground. A clash of Crimson red mixed with the green rages of the barbarians at the gates. This was the final push in the enemy's great scourge across the roman lands. The Gaul's had been pressing the borders and striking at bridge ways for weeks. nothing could stop the blood bath before the once green valley stretching across the borders of Segesta and Arrentium.
The Julii armies having clashed with the Gaul's was one of the biggest that has been see. The Mistake of letting the enemy be allies only to be stabbed in the back. This was the only attempt that was left to defend. The Gaul's where screaming their war cries charging from the forests and from the plains. their numbers far exceeding that of the roman forces. This blood bath that laid before their eyes was apparent. It was clear that they have lost but where determines to fight to the last man.
Surveying this carnage a Lone man stood atop the hill side over looking the battle lines. The army before him was laid bested and near destruction. But he clung to his horse almost untouched. This Roman arm was being destroyed and he sat their for a second trying to come up with the best possible outcome. How was he going to save his remaining countrymen and keep the Gaul's out of their territory. The Julii kept Rome's borders safe and they weren't about to lose now.
He looked up seeing the scene. the bodies and the bloodshed. "Archers to positions and fire on the second's command." The man spoke with almost a commanding tone. He turned around facing 3 other Generals. "I will lead my the Calvary from the entire combined forces into a side charge. And You Julian and Catiaus will lead our infantry in from the north and the west. Ill come in from the south after we deal with their forces trying to mop up to survivors." He looks back at the second in command.
No words between the two had to between the two had to be spoken. they understood each other. The Generals departed leaving the lone man starring at the battlefields display below. The small fires from destroyed war equipment and the smell of burnt flesh, ash, and blood was strong enough to make those even with the strongest stomach's want to bend over and empty their meal on the ground.
The lone man vanished from the hillside leaving the empty spot barren as the cries of those dying still filled the air along with a loud battle cry. It was hard to imagine not a hour ago this was the starting location of one of the largest armies ever to assemble. But bested by hoards of Gaul's that came together to drown out the enemy lines. One of the largest armies that the Gaul's could ever produce.
3000 brave Romans stood as part of this army that stood against the unending hoards of barbarians that came crashing down on them. And as of this point around 400 where all that remained of the once proud force now struggling to survive. The forces digging threw the fields of already dead men hadn't even noticed that a new force had come up to aid the now out numbered romans.
War horns sound off in the distance as the large mass of enemy troop stopped at their point and starred at the horizon. 2 massive lines of infantry come marching down the north and west end to face the army head on. The front lines lead by the generals who where given their orders. The forces where enough to draw most of the Gaul's towards their positions. Thousands of war crazed barbarians barring down on two massive lines of roman reinforcement.
The leading General the man that was on top the hill listened in his position for the sounds of combat to grow louder. When he was sure they where in combat he turned to look into the eyes of the other Calvary men beside him. "Show no mercy to these pig." Was the only comment that escaped his voice as he suddenly charged leading a combined total of 800 Calvary troops towards the surviving 400 men.
By the time the enemy noticed the movement it was already to late. The Calvary crashed into the side of the enemy line not only stunning the enemy but leaving the surviving romans in a confused pause. And while the Calvary charged the general approached. "Raise your swords Romans. We can't fight for you but we can fight with you." He turned to charge back into battle that now Rallied survivors screaming as they followed.
The war Zone shifted as the Calvary drove the enemy numbers out of the forest. His plan was to drive the first attack force into his archers then carry the surviving romans to aid his infantry. The planned seemed to be working. the Gaul's were routing and running. It didn't take long from the Calvary chasing them for them to run out of the forest into the valley and with in range of the archers.
This small plan had a flaw. Once the Archers fired they would give away their positions. they are the in the in-between point between the Aiding Calvary and the Infantry forces. If the Large Mass of Gaul's drawn by the Infantry lines see the arrows. they could overwhelm the Archers and outnumber the combined Calvary and infantry survivors. It was a gamble he had to that the general hoped would pay off.
Once the Archers fired their arrows the Calvary stopped charging and watched as the enemy numbers where cut down by iron raining down on them from the sky. It didn't take a mastermind to come up with a good defensive strategy but it did take a person who had knowledge in tactics. The men on the ground shifted as time went on The enemy being all but crushed.
To the general's luck his plan worked and not only did his Calvary turn their attention to the enemy from behind the remaining 400 split to the left with out command to cut the enemy's route towards the archers. At the same time the Archers with out orders reorganized and repositioned to get within distance of the main fight. As the Calvary charged the enemy's hidden Archers suddenly fired from the trees. Prompting many of the soldier to fall.
The general with fire in his eyes turned their force to charge directly at the tree line. And unknown to the general a massive fighting number of archers was waiting as he charged. Arrows raining down on both sides the general knew that at this point he had to leave his co commanders in charge and take the initiative. The closer he got to the enemy line the more men he lost by the barrage of arrows.
Just as he busted threw the trees the world suddenly froze. I big sign reading Close Victory displayed itself. The battle field was clear as day. The Gaul's where in a mass route even thou their was many of them. they still outnumbers the reinforcements by a large number. but moral was lowered to a fatal degree after the archers cleared the enemy forces caught in the trap. Meaning the enemy's general was in that ambushed line. The Field of battle faded until a blackness took over.
"I can't believe that worked. This was just a test strategy but it worked!" On the other side of the computer monitor viewing the battle from a high position was the reason behind such a victory. Me Patrick C. Julius. to my utter shock that strategy actually worked. I had been redoing this battle scenario in my campaign over and over trying to find away to break the enemy's constant attacks on my border line.
I play a lot of my Favorite computer game and it been a pain to bring this to a end. I wasn't going for a complete conquer route I wasn't going for a senate victory I was Just trying to learn the game as Best as I possibly could. It was the first time i tried playing the story as I normally always played the custom battles. And it's been a struggle from start to finish.
I lost my footing the first part of the game. Arrentium and Rome both fell to the Gaul's in early game years. then Mid game I not only took them back but I managed to secure our borders and secure a lasting peace with the Gaul's. I even managed to take a couple settlements in the ocean after they rebelled from their factions. Caralis and Palma where not that hard to take. But towards the end of the game things got hard.
Trying to stop the endless onslaught of the Gaul's was extremely hard. I had to send almost all my forces to break through. And it looks like I am able to break through. But i was not really planning to break through tonight I was going to rest. I laid back in my bed after shutting off the computer looking up at the ceiling. "Tomorrow we are going to bust through the defensive line. " I smiled laying back in the bed smiling.
though my sleep was a bit rough. I found myself in some kind of heavenly chamber looking down at the world. "He's awake." I looked up to see a man and a women standing their. This was a very strange dream and I kind of wanted to see where it was going and I always loved surprises. "I am glad your awake theirs not enough time. We are going to be sending you into it right away good luck Julius." The next thing I know I'm waking up in a room that isn't even mine.
