Chapter 1: Rough Day
It had started out like any other day for me. I had woken up early to get dressed and ready for work, leaving and locking my house behind before walking along the path that would take me to where I worked.
The walk was boring, it always was, but there was a comfort in the everyday routine of walking to work. It had been a cold morning with a slight mist coming in from the sea and cars passed me by as I walked along the footpath.
It was when I had begun to cross the road that some prick came barrelling down the road in their car. I turned to see it bearing down on me and then… darkness. I'd bet I didn't even feel the crunch of my bones breaking as the car hit me at high speeds. Now I found myself facedown on a cold floor, darkness swimming in my vision.
Then the sudden rush of air hit me as I sucked in a desperate lungful of life. Panting hard almost hyperventilating, I blinked my eyes a few times, wondering if I had woken up in hospital. Doubtless my parents, brother and sister would've dropped everything they were doing to rush to my side.
But the feeling of cold almost wet black stone in my face said to me that if this was a hospital, then they must've thrown me down in the basement thinking me a lost cause. That, or the old man was too much of a cheapskate to fork out for a room.
Then a loud booming voice announced itself, saying, "Awake at last I see." I flipped myself over onto my back, grunting and groaning painfully as I did so. This seemed to amuse the owner of the voice as it said, "And no worse for wear."
I slowly sat up, levering myself up with my arms that felt like wet noodles and I looked to see a frankly surprising figure standing before me. The figure was a tall black robed skeleton with a large harvest scythe in bony hands as empty black eye sockets bored down on while a toothy grin of yellow almost browned teeth gazed at me. If I had to guess, this guy was the actual Grim Reaper come to greet me and either send me to heaven or hell. Most likely hell in my case.
"Are you Death?" I blurted out. Nice work, foot in mouth as usual.
'Death' seemed to grin wider, if that were even possible, as he-she-it replied, "Yeah, I'm Death, the Grim Reaper, or whatever you fuckers call me."
The use of such an expletive surprised me and almost made me laugh. Most people would believe that the Grim Reaper was a polite, civilised and enigmatic being, or a completely psychotic megalomaniac that wanted to harvest every living soul in existence. So, to hear the Grim Reaper itself talk like a sailor was surprising.
The robe wearing skeleton seemed to pick up on my surprise and asked me, "What? Did yer expect me to be all civilised or a complete fucking nutter?"
"Uhh, n-no! Not really. I was just, uhh…" I hemmed and hawed awkwardly.
Death gave a raspy dry chuckle that sounded like a burlap sack being dragged across broken glass as it said, "Well, when you've been at this gig as long as I've been doing it, you'd probably be pretty sick and tired of it by now and just want to get on with your day, go home and put up yer feet and have a cold one."
"Well, I can kinda relate to that," I admitted as I managed to pull myself to standing position, fighting the urge to puke up what I'd eaten for breakfast as I did.
"Yeah, I saw how you quit yer last job to go into something else," Death said sardonically. "Not that I blame ya, mind. Plenty of times I wanted to quit this fucking gig and go into something else, but unlike you, I'm the only who can do this fucking job," it stated with an air of exhaustion and annoyance.
"So… what is this then?" I asked. "Are you here to judge me and decide where to send me?"
Death seemed to glare at me in annoyance before replying, "Look, kid. It ain't up to me to judge ya for wot ya do in your bleeding existence. I'm just doing my job. I do as I'm told, and I don't get paid very fucking much to tell yer the truth."
"Oh. Sorry," I mumbled.
"But as it happens, you're a special case in this regard," Death then said to me.
"Special case? What does that even mean?" I asked, fear beginning to creep into my voice.
"Well, according to the Powers That Be, God or whatever fucked-up deity you worship, a special case is an individual who is dead, but not quite," Death said to me.
"So, I could go back then?" I asked feeling a little less worried and a little more hopeful.
"That's the thing, kid. You're well and truly dead in your world, and even if you could go back, you'd be wishing someone would put ya outta yer misery," Death told me with a raspy chuckle. "I mean, if you saw the state you were in when they carted ya into hospital, you wouldn't be too keen on going back to your own world in that state," it said with another chuckle.
"Right. Idiot," I admonished myself before I asked, "So, is this gonna be a reincarnation thing of some sort? Do I get reborn as some little kid or animal in my own world and go from there?"
"Not really, no," Death said vaguely. "You'll going to another world. And it ain't exactly reincarnation what's gonna happen to ya, but you could look at it that way," it added.
"Why doesn't that fill me with confidence?" I said anxiously. "I'm gonna be reincarnated into a girl, aren't I?" I asked.
"You'll just have to find out, won't you?" Death replied with a sardonic grin. "You all set then? Any questions?" it asked.
"What kind of world am I going to?" I asked.
"I will say that it's a mishmash of worlds that yer familiar with and leave it at that," Death said vaguely. "Any other questions?" And the way Death said that implied that any other questions were most unwelcome.
"No…?" I offered tentatively.
"Good. Off you go then," Death said with a grin and bright white light filled my vision and I knew no more.
…
The bright light faded and I found myself falling through the air at breakneck speed towards a forest. I gave a strangled yell and flailed about before crashing through tree branches. The boughs, leaves and twigs whipped at me as I landed through the canopy before landing on the grassy earth with a thud.
I tried to gasp out in pain but the air had been driven from my body and it was all I could do to roll over onto my back and try to suck in some life giving oxygen back into my lungs. After a moment, air returned to me and then the pain set. Giving a shaky grunt, I levered myself up to sitting position and it was then I realised a couple of things.
Instead of my usual work attire, I was clad in what looked like armour of some kind, including a helmet which added some considerable weight to my head. I attempted to lift the thing off my head but it wouldn't budge and a tightness under my chin told me that there was a leather strap which kept the helmet firmly affixed to my head.
Looking at my hands, I saw that they and my forearms were encased in gauntlets made of leather and fur with a wide strip of iron strapped over the top of them. With clumsy movements, I clenched my hands, the fingers feeling like they were made of stiff wood. I looked at the rest of my body to see an iron cuirass covering my torso with a reasonably long kilt of animal fur and studded leather plates covering my lower body with leather and metal boots on my calves and feet.
"What the bloody fuck is going on here?" I asked myself as I slowly stood to my feet and looked myself. "A dream… that's what all this is," I muttered to myself as I then took in my surroundings. It reasonably illuminated in this forest, but I couldn't tell whether it was morning or afternoon; it had been morning when I woke up to go to work, but I had no way of knowing what the time was right now.
I then realised that there was a heavier weight dangling from my left hip and I looked to see what it was and my eyes widened upon seeing a sword in a leather sheath hanging by my side. I had always had a fascination with swords of all kinds; from high fantasy blades from franchises like Lord of the Rings to science fiction weapons like the famous lightsaber from Star Wars. I had always wanted to own a real sword, but with the laws regarding weapons in Australia, I could never really hope to get one of my own. The closest thing I had to a sword was a Japanese training bokken which was lethal enough on its own, but I would never be able to use the real thing.
Hesitantly, I wrapped my fingers around the leather wrapped hilt of the sword and with a tug, I drew the sword from its sheath. With a rasp of metal scraping against leather and wood, the sword slid out relatively easy. The colour of the metal blade wasn't anything special, but it still shone in the light of the forest and to my inexperienced gaze, the edges of the sword looked real enough. It was also heavy in my hand, so heavy I almost let it drop, but I held it up as long as I could admiring the weapon I now held in my grasp.
But I was then alerted to the sound of rustling nearby. With fear beginning to grip me, I looked around to see where the noise was coming from. I then looked behind me to see the nearby bushes shaking, their leaves rustling as they did so. And it appeared that whatever was causing the disturbance was getting closer and closer.
Holding my newfound weapon out in front of me in a clumsy awkward stance, I bit my lip and waited for whatever it was to approach.
Then stepping out from the bushes was what I thought the strangest looking creature I'd ever seen. It looked like something a child had drawn with its arms, legs and face coloured a dark purple-black colour with brown gloves and shoes, a green unitard and fez like hat on its head. A pair of red peepers stared at me as I stared back at the curious looking creature. I also noticed that little wisps of purple-black smoke wafted behind the thing as it approached me.
It didn't seem outwardly hostile as it just looked at me almost blankly. I then tried to make some conversation with the thing, though I doubted it could talk given that it had no mouth to speak of.
"Umm… hello… little… man-thing?" I ventured awkwardly and the creature tilted its head as if confused or maybe it understood me. I couldn't really tell. "Would you mind telling me where I am?" I asked the creature. The creature just stared at blankly. I was wondering if this thing even spoke English and I had only ever spoken English despite my teachers' best efforts to get to learn foreign languages.
I thought of trying to say hello in French when the creature suddenly jabbed at with a gloved fist. It was sheer luck I avoided the punch in time, but I could feel and hear the wind whistle past my ear as I barely dodged the attack. Stumbling backwards, I held my sword in both hands, my heart beginning to pound with a mixture of fear and adrenaline coursing through my veins.
"Back off! I-I mean it!" I warned the hostile creature which then surged towards me with its gloves fists raised to punch me. I don't know whether it was some kind of fight or flight instinct or something else, but I quickly lunged with the sword in my hands giving a shout as I did so. The blade somehow pierced the creature's chest and stuck deeply inside its guts. Wisps and vapours of purple-black smoke leaked out around the blade of my sword before I managed to wrench the thing free and stumbled back, panting from sudden exhaustion as the adrenaline left my body. I then realised that this was the first time I had killed something and I looked to see the strange creature with the gaping wound its chest and I thought to apologise when the creature's form dissipated into tiny little balls of black and purple before scattering into the earth and disappeared.
I stared at where the creature I had mortally wounded was but a scant moment ago and I wondered just where the hell I was. But that thought was quickly dashed as rising out from the earth were the creature's… brothers? Comrades? Or clones? Most of them were unarmed but I saw one or two that to my worry were armed with what I could only liken to lightsabres.
Panic began to grip me again as I held up my weapon and looked all around, trying to find some opening where I could make my escape. But to my dismay, there were no real openings for me to make a clean getaway as the creatures surrounded me from all sides, cutting off any chance of escape.
I was no fighter by any means. I wouldn't even call myself a lover. And right now, I was starting to wish I'd never gone to work at all.
Just as I prepared to meet my harsh fate, something leaped down from the canopy of the trees and landed in front of me. In a blur, the strange thing shot at the creatures with some kind of pistol, but instead of the somewhat familiar sound of gunfire I often associated with real life firearms, the pistol this figure was armed with shot lasers. Once almost a dozen of the hostile creatures had been destroyed, the figure turned around to look at me and I did my best to keep my jaw from dropping to the floor.
Standing in front of me was a tall blonde haired and green-eyed woman wearing a skin tight blue suit. Her face was youthful and gorgeous looking and her golden blonde hair was done in a high ponytail as she looked at me with those bright green eyes.
"Don't just stand there! Fight!" she barked at me and I almost didn't register what she had said before one of the lightsaber wielding creatures attacked me. Barely managing to avoid the slash, I thrust with my sword and slew the creature where it burst into particles of purple and black. My saviour then shifted her advanced looking laser pistol into a handle where upon a long tendril of orange energy emerged from the muzzle and she used the thing like a bullwhip, destroying more of the strange creatures.
I killed one or two of the creatures, but my rescuer had done most of the work and once the creatures had all been killed, I fell back onto my arse and panted in exhaustion. My rescuer looked at me critically and remarked, "Never done any fighting before, have you?"
I shook my head in response, too out of breath to give a reply. My rescuer raised a perfectly groomed eyebrow looking as if she was debating whether she should've left me to my fate.
"Well, in any case they're gone now," she said as she looked around. "Who are you? How did you get here? What were you doing out here?" she then asked those questions in rapid succession.
"I… guh… don't know how I got here," I managed to say in response before I shakily stood to my feet.
"What do you mean you don't know?" the woman demanded.
"I was on my way to work when suddenly I was…" the flash of a car bearing down on me then meeting the Grim Reaper himself flashed in my mind. "I don't know how to explain it," I then said lamely.
"What's your name, kid?" the woman asked.
I opened my mouth to say my name but suddenly as if out of nowhere, I blanked. I opened my mouth again to say my name and no sound came out. "My name is… -." I gave a startled squawk as I realised I couldn't say my own name.
"What's wrong? Why can't you say your name?" my rescuer asked me in confusion.
"I don't know!" I replied. "I know my name, but I can't say it!" I said.
"What do you mean you can't say your name?"
"I know what my name is, but I can't say it! It's like it's been taken from me!" I said coming up with the only reasonable explanation I could think of.
The woman pursed her lips in annoyance before saying, "Well, that's either really convenient, or something darker is at work," she said.
"Who are you?" I asked her.
"Samus. Samus Aran," my saviour replied and my eyes widened under my helmet as I now realised I was looking at none other than Samus Aran from the Metroid games, albeit in her zero suit form rather than her famous power armour.
"Samus Aran?" I repeated the name.
"Yes, that is my name. It always has been," Samus Aran confirmed.
"THE Samus Aran?" I asked for clarification.
"You know any other Samus Arans out there?" Samus asked me looking a little annoyed at my questions.
I sat down on the grass to try and process what I had just learnt. Somehow I had died and was reborn/reincarnated into a world where Samus Aran existed. I had never played the Metroid games at all. Never had the opportunity to. But if meeting the actual Samus Aran was a thing that was happening right now, perhaps I was in some universe where Metroid was real?
"Where are we?" I managed to ask after finding my voice.
"We're in the Hyrule Forest. Why do you ask?" came Samus's response. My eyes almost bugged out of my head at that answer. Hyrule Forest? Was I in Legend of Zelda all of a sudden?
Samus looked at me with a curious and cautious look in her green eyes before she said, "Seems like you're a bit confused as to where you are, right now. Is there anyone you can call to come pick you up?" she asked me.
"I don't have a phone," I replied numbly.
Samus sighed offering a hand to me. I hesitantly took it and Samus lifted me to my feet and said to me, "Well, I can take you to the nearest town. Maybe get Doctor Mario to have a look at you."
"Doctor Mario?" I echoed in confusion. Now I was really starting to wonder if this was all some crazy dream.
"Don't worry. He's a certified doctor. If anyone can tell what's wrong with you, it'll be him," Samus told me.
"What about his regular job? Being a plumber?" I asked.
"That's Mario. Doctor Mario is a clone of the original," Samus replied as if she were talking about the weather.
"A clone?" I said blankly.
"Listen, I don't have time to play twenty questions right now," Samus then said to me sternly. "You wanna stay here and risk getting eaten by primids and other monsters? Be my guest," she told me before she turned around and walked off.
I stood there a moment to process what I had been told. Somehow I ended up in another universe where Samus Aran and Doctor Mario existed. I wasn't up to date on all thing related to Nintendo, but there was only one Nintendo game franchise that had practically every Nintendo related character in it. Super Smash Bros.
I then scrambled to catch up with Samus, hopeful I could find some answers to the questions that burned inside me. I didn't know what the future held for me in this strange new world and I wasn't sure if I was even ready for it. All I could do now was try and get some answers and try and figure out what I was brought here for.
TO BE CONTINUED…
A/N: There! First chapter of this crossover is done and dusted! I hope you all enjoyed it because it was a mad scrambled to cobble this together, so please do tell me what you think of this first chapter so far and leave any suggestions for this story in a review.
And for this story, I've set up a romance poll on my profile of a list of lovely ladies and lasses from the Smash Bros universe as well as from other franchises such as Mortal Kombat, DC Comics, Marvel Comics, The Witcher series to name a few. I've even included fan-made creations Bowsette and Boosette as options for this story and since Doctor Mario is a clone of Mario in this story, I figured Bowsette and Boosette could be hybrid clones of Princess Peach using Bowser's and Boo's DNA respectively.
Anyways, not much more to say, so I'll leave this here and catch you all in the next one, whenever it may come.
Be kind to one another,
Angry lil' elf.
