Originally, it was about Lorenzo not knowing what he wanted to do after graduation, but it slighly changed. Work Text:
(The scene opens with a kind of future career day. Arnold is there with his friend Lorenzo.)
LORENZO
— Hey, did you saw that Arnold ? I'm very fascinated with planets.
ARNOLD
— I see it. You visited all specialists, like the Mercure's one, the Venus's one and some others.
LORENZO
— It's my passion. I love it !
(We shift into Lorenzo's house. His parents, Hugh and Laura welcome him.)
HUGH
— Lorenzo, boy, i have a wonderful news for you.
LORENZO
— What is it dad ?
HUGH
— A friend of mine, who also was a colleague got promoted. You will start working with in a couple of months.
LORENZO (Falsely happy).
— That's great, dad.
HUGH
— Yeah, isn't it ? We finally will begin something i always dreamed of : A generation of Businessman. My dad was a carpenter, but even if i respected his work, i did not interest myself into the wood industry. It would be great if for once, i began something. Trust me, son. (He gives him a thumb up and exits. As he is gone, Lorenzo becomes very disappointed. Laura notices it.)
LAURA
— Don't worry, Lorenzo. He is extatic because of the event, but whatever you choose, we always will support you (she kisses his cheek and leaves as well. Lorenzo stays alone . The Scene Shifts into Lorenzo's bedroom. It's almost the same he had as a kid, except of course, his previous toys were replaced by more adults things. Lorenzo is in his bed , and it's the night. But he can't sleep. The clock's sound is very amplificated into his ears. He sweats a lot and look very nervous. The Screen turns black.)
(The next scene shows Lorenzo who is at the library. A sign of "Quiet talking" is visible on the door. Lorenzo is in a hammock (Note : Some libraries suggest that) and dreams he is a great scientist who talks about some planets. He is very well and gets some applause, but his dad is absent, as only his mom stands. Arnold's hand shakes his shoulder, gently, waking-him up.)
ARNOLD
— Hey, Lorenzo, how are you doing ? It's been a while.
LORENZO
— I'm sorry, man. I felt terrible. My dad wants me to follow his footsteps and work in the furniture industry. But i don't want to. (Arnold encourages him gently, while he continues.)
LORENZO
— I... I don't want to quarrel with him, but on the other side, he does not have to decide about my future.
ARNOLD
— So, what about your mom ?
LORENZO
— Well, she approves my choice. I sometimes get lost, Arnold, i don't know what i have to do.
ARNOLD
— Well, it's a strange case. But... (He stops, realizing he could have the perfect solution) I... I think i found something. Look, (The screen turns black).
(The new scene opens with Lorenzo dining with his parents. His father jovially opens the dialogue.)
HUGH
— So, Lorenzo, my son, i barely wait the days until you begin your work with your old man. Imagine, son, imagine, we are a family and we also will build one.
LORENZO (after he watched Laura who gives him some encouragements).
— Speaking of that, Dad, i have an announcement.
HUGH
— What is it ?
LORENZO
— Well, i don't want to be in the furniture industry. But that does not mean i can't start a business. (His dad stays silent, but does not get mad at him).
As you know, planets are my passion. I always had good grades in sciences and astrophysics. It's really a pleasure to study about Mercure or Venus, or even some asteroids. I enjoy learning about Moon or Sun. It's my dream to become a great doctor in astrophysics.
(He and Laura wait nervously as they watch Hugh. He stays silent a brief moment, but for both of them, it looks like an eternity. Hugh finally talks.)
HUGH
— Well, son, it's great to have the guts to tell me your true passion. I want you to know that i'm not mad at you at all. Plus, we still ARE a family, and if i would force you to make something you don't like, it would be purely selfish. You know, my brother John who was younger than me, felt he was forced to work with my dad, but his dream was to become a surgeon. He died by suicide (Note, i know it's very dark, but i wanted to illustrate my point). I don't want you to live the same thing, i could not bear to lose my only kid. (Lorenzo and Laura both smile).
LORENZO
— Hey, you know, if i'm well known, maybe i will make videos or shows about space and science, maybe it could incite some kids to learn about it as well. Maybe i could start some products 's creation like goodies or something like that.
HUGH (chuckling gently)
— That's a good idea, boy, and i would be very glad to help you with that (he touches his son's hair as an affection gesture). And, you, know, your mother and i know some people who could help you... (They continue to talk as the camera fades out to their's house exterior. The Screen turns black.)
