A puff of purple smoke billowed from one of the many, many vials Sucy had in front of her, Lotte, and Akko, gazing down in awe and curiosity. The potion seemed to be working, the liquid bubbling, having changed from green to blue to purple.
The three heard that this concoction could give whoever drank it any magical ability they wanted, and Akko knew she had to see for herself.
"I think it's done." Akko spoke up, clapping her hands together, with Lotte looking at her friend cautiously, and Sucy sat on her seat, almost looking half-asleep.
As soon as the bubbling ceased, Akko took the vial, the purple liquid sloshing in the glass, and Lotte wrung her hands together.
"Are you sure it's a good idea to drink that, Akko?" Lotte asked, nervous for her friend, who only looked excited and eager. "Although this is part of the exam coming up, maybe we should-"
"Lotte, you worry too much. Besides, I want to see if this gives me any new magic to work with." Akko replied, straightening up her back, and then without further ado, she placed the vial to her lips, swigging it all down with a few gulps.
Sucy turned her head, and a smile graced her usually lethargic features. "This ought to be good."
"Akko!"
Akko swallowed the liquid down, and then placed the vial back on the table amongst the others.
She blinked, but before she could utter another word, she opened her mouth and then a powerful stream of fiery hot breath escaped her lips, the flame soon cascading a pile of papers set aside on the table.
Lotte screamed, jumping off the ground, shock and fright making her heart pound in her chest, looking right and left, seeing a cup of water on the desk.
"Mayday, mayday!" She yelled out, nearly tripping over her own feet while throwing the cup of water to douse the flames on the papers. The papers were smoldered, sizzling as the flames were no more.
Sucy looked positively surprised and excited, the red-hot fire breath billowing and bellowing from Akko; this was one of the most interesting things she had witnessed all day.
Akko soon breathed out, the fire dissipating into smoke, and she collapsed onto her knees, coughing out puffs of smoke. She gripped her stomach with both hands, unable to keep her heart thundering in her chest.
Catching her breath, Lotte knelt down, and placed a hand on Akko's shoulder. "Akko, are you alright? That was a close one, we almost burnt this room down, if not the whole school."
Seeing that the excitement was over, Sucy slouched back on her stool. "Well, that was fun while it lasted."
Akko took in a few more breaths, and she then began to laugh, lifting to her head to meet both Lotte and Sucy. "Wow, did you see that? I breathed fire, that was incredible!"
Lotte sighed, more relieved than annoyed, and she grabbed Akko's arm, lifting her off the floor, and then gently pulled Sucy off her stool. "Come on, let's get some fresh air, before either one of you get any more bright ideas."
Neither of them protest, they knew better than that.
Opening the doors, Akko, Lotte, and Sucy walked out of the potion room, out to the wide open woods, just outside of Luna Nova Academy.
