Jane's Coming Out
Jane laid in bed, just staring at the ceiling and wondering if she should do it or not. She thought to herself, 'how hard could it be? I could simply just tell her. She wouldn't be judgmental, would she? She loves me. She always said she would love me forever, but if I told her this would she still love me?'
Jane wasn't getting any sleep. She got out of bed and went out to the living room and flopped down on the old rugged couch. She grabbed the TV remote to see what was on. Maybe she could find an old Red Sox game to keep her occupied.
If she didn't fall asleep soon, she might have to call out of work. She was too tired to do anything. Then she remembered that Maura told her that if she needed to talk to just come over anytime, morning, noon or night. Jane had a key she could go over and talk to Maura.
She looked at the clock. It was 11:30 PM. Maura might still be awake. She threw on a pair of old sweatpants and grabbed her hoodie and took off. She was going to Maura's house. Maura could help her sort this out.
It was 11:45 PM when Jane knocked on Maura's door. When Maura opened the door, she was in stylish satin pajamas. A slight yawn slipped out as she said, "Hello Jane. You could have used your key, that is why I gave you one."
"I know." Jane said as she entered as Maura moved so she could pass her.
"What is the matter, Jane?" Maura could tell that something was on her mind.
"I was thinking about what we were talking about earlier, about how I need to talk to my mom about me being Maurasexual."
"Jane, you know that really isn't a word, right?"
"I know but I am not a lesbian, so I don't consider myself bisexual. You are the only woman I am interested in." Jane admitted.
"That might be true Jane, however we are both women and I know you don't want to put a label on our relationship but we are in a same-sex relationship." Maura explained.
"This is all too confusing, Maur. Can we just go to sleep and talk more later?" Jane asked as she also yawned. Jane was hoping that Maura would let her cuddle up with her. She always slept better with Maura cuddled up to her.
"Yes, Jane, come to bed." Maura grabbed jane's hand and led her to the bedroom. Jane took off her sweatpants and her hoodie and climbed into her side of the bed. Once Maura got into the bed, they snuggled up together. Within ten minutes they were both sound asleep.
Maura's alarm went off at 6:30 AM. Maura had a morning routine that she went through each morning. Jane stirred and said, "Five more minutes, Maur."
Maura leaned over and gave Jane a kiss on the cheek and said, "Go back to sleep darling, I will wake you up when you need to get up."
"Thanks, Maur." Jane said as she rolled over and went back to sleep. Jane trusted that Maura would wake her up in time to get ready for work. Jane had extra work suits in the closet of the guest bedroom. They each had clothes at each other's place.
Maura had mentioned to Jane last month that she could move in with her as she spent so much time at her house already. Jane wasn't ready for that step yet and Maura didn't want to push her. She was happy that Jane agreed to date her so she wasn't going to push her on anything else. It had taken awhile for Jane to admit that she had feelings for Maura.
At 7 AM Maura, dressed in only her undergarments, sat down on Jane's side of bed and softly stroked and kissed Jane's cheek and said, "Love, it is time to wake up."
Jane sat up and pulled Maura onto her and kissed her fiercely. Maura was surprised she had thought that Jane was asleep. They kissed for a few minutes and then Maura said, "Jane, we need to get up. We don't want to be late for work. Was there something that you wanted to talk to me about last night?"
"Yes, but can we talk about it over breakfast?" Jane asked. She knew she really need to get up and take a quick shower and get dressed. She couldn't be late for work again. Frost covered for her last time and it cost her having to stop and buy donuts and coffee for him and Korsak.
Maura stepped into the walk-in closet and finished getting dressed. She had her clothes all laid out already she just didn't want to get her dress wrinkled in the process of waking up Jane. She had learned that lesson. She never knew what Jane would do when she attempted to wake her up.
After her shower, Jane found Maura in the kitchen. She handed Jane her cup of coffee as she entered the kitchen. Jane wrapped her arms around Maura and kissed her on the neck and said, "Thanks, babe."
"Your welcome Jane." Maura acknowledged as she plated Jane's scrambled eggs and bacon. They had a few minutes before they needed to leave. "Care to tell me what you wanted to talk to me about now?"
Jane finished chewing on the food she had in her mouth and then said, "I was thinking that I really need to tell my Ma that we are dating and that you asked me to move in with you."
"Really, you feel that you are ready for that step? I don't want you to feel pressured at all because I am not pressuring you."
"I know you are not pressuring me Maur, I just feel like I am hiding our relationship and I want to be able to hold your hand in public and not have to worry if my brothers or mother see us. I want to tell them."
"Well, Jane today would be the perfect day." Maura said as she sat down with her oatmeal and fresh fruit.
"What are you talking about Maur?" Jane was curious, what was special about today.
"You said you wanted to tell your mother about us but you were afraid of how she would react. Well, today is National Coming Out Day. Therefore, I think it would be a perfect day to share with her. I can be with you when you tell her if you like."
"That would be great Maur. She expects to see you when she sees me so if I saw her alone, she would wonder what was going on."
"There is a large LGBT community at BPD so you would not be alone." Maura announced. She had met quite a few of the officers and support staff already and been to some of their events even before she and Jane started seeing one another. She had always considered her sexuality as 'fluid' and didn't label herself as a lesbian or bisexual. But she understood that she was a member of this community.
On the way to work Jane took the first step in coming out she called her mother and set up a dinner date for herself, her mother and Maura for 7 PM. When she saw Frankie at work when he was on a break from patrol, she sat him down and told him. He hugged her and informed her that he had a feeling that there was something more than friendship with her and Maura. He was happy for her. She made him promise not to tell anybody as she was telling their mother that night. He promised.
Jane and Maura took Frost and Korsak out to lunch and told them. Then they watched as Korsak reached in his pocket and handed a twenty-dollar bill over to Frost. "What is that for?" Jane asked a little curious as to why they were exchanging money.
Frost replied, "I had bet him that I thought something was going on with you two a few months back and he didn't believe me so we bet on it. He lost so he owed me twenty bucks."
"How many other people think we were a couple?" Jane asked as she was now curious.
Korsak answered this one, "Almost everybody I know thinks that something was going on with you and the doc. I just thought you would have told us that is why I took the bet with Frost."
"Does the lieutenant think that also?" Jane was surprised, she thought that they were very discrete at work.
"Yes, he asked me last month. But then he said, forget it, it is your business and if you need him to know you will tell him." Korsak replied.
"Well crap, I guess I might as well tell Cavanaugh when we get back from lunch. As long as nobody tells my mother before dinner tonight." On that note they went back to the station and went back to work. Jane went straight to Cavanaugh's office and knocked on the door.
"Hey, Rizzoli, what's up?" Cavanaugh asked after he saw Jane at his door.
"Do you have a few minutes lieu?" Jane asked a little nervous about discussing her private life with her boss.
"Sure, come in." He said as Jane walked in and closed the door behind her.
"I just needed to inform you of something in my personal life." Jane stated as she sat down.
"Are you here to tell me that you and Dr. Isles are dating?"
Jane was shocked that he had guessed why she was there. "Umm, well yes, sir."
"Well, it's about time, I was wondering how long you were going to make us wait. You do need to go down to HR and fill out some paperwork, both of you. Congratulations, I have noticed that you are a lot happier since you two started dating." He said as he smiled at her.
"Thank you." Jane said shyly still trying to come to grips with how happy everyone seemed to be for them.
"Go ahead, go to HR already and then get back to your paperwork detective."
"Thank you, sir, I will do just that." Jane said as she got up and left his office.
As she was about to walk out the door he called, "Rizzoli."
"Yes, sir."
"I am really happy for you."
"Thanks lieu." She then and walked back towards her desk and told Korsak that she had to go to HR.
Jane went down to the morgue and told Maura what the lieutenant had said and they went to HR together. It didn't take long to file the paperwork. Jane pointed to the address on her form and asked, "Maur, can I put your address and move in, if the offer is still available?"
"Yes, Jane the offer is still available." Maura told Jane the address and she wrote it down. On their way home from work that night they stopped at Jane's apartment and picked up quite a bit of her clothes and took them to Maura's house, their house. They would continue to move her stuff over the next few days.
At 7 PM they met Angela at the restaurant. They ordered their food and when it was delivered, they enjoyed light conversation. At the end of dinner, Jane reached over and took Maura's hand on top of the table and didn't say a word. Angela put her hand over her mouth and then smiled and said, "I knew it, you two are dating." Jane and Maura just looked at each other.
"Angela, how did you know?" Maura asked.
"A mother always know these things, sweetheart. I am so happy for you two."
"Ma, how do you think Pop and Tommy are going to react?"
"Your father, not so good. We had discussed it before he left me and he said he didn't agree with it. He liked you Maura but he didn't believe in same-sex relationships. He couldn't even talk about it with me. Tommy still has the biggest crush on you, Maura so he might be a little bit upset at first but I believe he will be happy for you both once he comes to terms that his older sister got the girl."
"Thank you, Ma. I have not been looking forward to this conversation with you and you made it so easy for me. I guess I could have come to you earlier. By the way. I am moving in with Maura. We started moving my stuff over today."
"Does that mean that your apartment is available because I am getting tired of living at Frankie's place." Angela asked because she really needed to find a place to live since they had lost the family home due to Frank's gambling problems. That is why Frank left and moved to Florida with whatever blonde bimbo he was seeing that week. Maura was the only blonde that Angela presently liked.
"Sure Ma, I still have two months left on my lease but I am sure they will let you take it over." Jane told her mother as they paid the check and got ready to leave the restaurant.
Jane had so many sleepless nights over coming out to her friends and family. She should have known that they all loved her and would support her relationship with Maura. Well maybe not her father but he had changed over the last ten years or so.
The next day Jane and Maura walked into the precinct hand in hand. They were no longer keeping their relationship a secret. Jane Rizzoli had come out and would gladly hold the hand of the woman she loved in public.
