Cid turned, his eyes filled with adoration of his love.
"Vincent...remember the first time I told you I loved you?"
Vincent sat silently, just gazing at Cid.
"It was raining hard...and you don't know this, but you never heard.
You sneezed, remember? And I had to say it over." Cid laughed a little to
himself. "'I said I love you' I said. And you didn't say a word. You just held
your hands to my face. I watched the rain run through your fingers. You have
such beautiful, frail fingers. Well, you touched my face, smiled and kissed
me. Do you still remember what you said?"
Vincent still sat in silence, remembering the entire day very clearly.
"I remember," Cid continued, "'If you die,' you said, 'so do I." You said,
"And it starts the day you give me a sign. Tell me I'm forever your's..." And I
kissed you and said, 'If you're forever mine.'" Cid sighed, and stroked
Vincent's hair softly. "Forever mine..."
Cid walked a few feet away before whirling around. "And remember
the LAST time I told you I loved you?!"
Vincent whimpered through the rag around his mouth, and pulled
once more at the rope that held his wrist behind him as he sat on that cold
floor, against the cold wall.
"Yes, it was warm and safe. And I PRAYED for that. But you never
heard me the time before that, did you?! No, you YAWNED! That's right, you
YAWNED at me! And, just like the first time!, 'I said I love you,' I said! And
again, you didn't say a word, did you?! You didn't say a fucking word!"
Cid bent over and yelled this into Vincent's face. Vince mewled into
the cloth, closing his eyes and letting the tears fall through his tightened lids.
"You just put your hands to your own damn face!! You sighed. Not a
CONTENT sigh, like usual! No, this was a BORED sigh!! An EXHASPERATED
sigh! And what did I do?! I CRIED! I let you see me fucking CRY. And then
what happened?! 'If you die,' I said, 'so do I.' And then fucking heartless little
bastard that you are, you said the words that broke my heart!!"
Vincent wanted to cry out, but it just came out as a muffled scream.
"'But there comes a day you stop understanding.'" Cid quoted, "'There
comes a day you see how it ends.'" He laughed wryly and bitterly, before
whirling at Vincent and screaming, "YOU FUCKING BASTARD!!"
Vincent pulled back at these words, hoping the wall would swallow
him whole and save him from Cid's fury.
"And then you looked me right in the eye, and said, 'There is no always
forever...just lies.'" Cid gave another dark chuckle, and screamed, "Is that
what you meant by 'I love you'?!? Lies!?"
Vincent watched in horror as Cid moved to the only object in the
concrete room, a table, and picked up Vincent's gun, which was resting on it.
Cid cocked it, whirled around, and pointed it at Vincent.
"'If you die,' you said...'so do I', you said," Cid repeated Vincents words,
"Without you, I'm dead."
