Chapter 3: Fitting in the New World
The sun shone brightly and slipped through inside Pocahontas's tent, but she was still fast asleep. It was then she heard something tap her gently on her cheek. She moaned softly and opened her eyes. To her surprise and amusement, she saw Baby Songaa awake, smiling and patting her cheek with a chubby hand.
"Aaaabaaa...Aaaabaaa" Songaa cooed as if trying to say, 'wake up'. Pocahontas giggled and took the baby in her arms. "Wingapo, Songaa." She cooed gently. Songaa squealed in delight and reached out at her with his chubby hands.
Pocahontas giggled and kissed him on his chubby cheeks, making the baby giggle. "Ready for your first day, my little one?" Pocahontas asked her new son. Songaa gurgled in delight as Pocahontas got out of bed.
Meeko and Flit were waking up too and approached Pocahontas with her new baby boy in her arms. "Good morning, you too." Pocahontas spoke with a friendly smile. Meeko chittered and sniffed at Songaa again.
"Aaauuuu..." Songaa cooed, reaching out to the raccoon with his chubby hands. Meeko chittered and nuzzled close to him. Songaa giggled and patted Meeko gently. "Aaauuuu..." He gurgled. Pocahontas giggled as she tightened her hold on her son and got out of her tent
The village was busy with activity. Men were fishing in the river or preparing for a hunt, women were weaving baskets, harvesting corn and squash or gathering nuts and berries, children were playing ball games or helping their parents.
Pocahontas looked around, smiling at how peaceful her village before looking at her baby son. "Look around you, Songaa." She told him gently. "Welcome to your new home." Songaa looked around in wonder.
"Nice to see you awake!" A voice called out and Pocahontas turned to see Nakoma approaching her. "Did you sleep well?" She asked. "Like a long" Pocahontas replied with a grin. Nakoma looked at the little baby boy in her friend's arms.
"Aaaaiiiii..." Songaa squealed, waving his little chubby arms. "Aaaaiii..." "Aww...that is so cute!" Nakoma squealed. Pocahontas giggled. "So, what are you planning for Songaa's first day?" Nakoma asked.
"Well, I want to take Songaa around the village." Pocahontas explained with an excited smile. "I want to teach him all about our life." "That's good." Nakoma replied. "I know Songaa will enjoy life here."
"Still, I must warn you..." She added with a frown. "Not everyone accepts your father's decision to keep Songaa." "There are those who believe Songaa is a demon and want him killed." She explained.
Pocahontas was shocked. "Killed?!" She exclaimed. "How can anyone say such a thing?" Nakoma sighed. "It's alright." She replied. "I doubt anyone would dare go against your father's wishes." "Still, I think it's best to keep Songaa close to you just in case."
Pocahontas grew a bit nervous and she looked down at Songaa, who was playing with his little toes. "I don't understand how anyone would want to hurt such an innocent child?" She murmured. Nakoma placed a comforting hand on her shoulder. "Some people are afraid of what is different." She told her. "But, I know you will be there to protect him."
Pocahontas smiled as she cuddled Songaa close to her. She had promised to be by her son no matter what.
(Five minutes later...)
"This is our fields, Songaa." Pocahontas told her son as she and Nakoma walked through the cornfields where ripe ears of golden corn grew. Songaa looked around in wonder, reaching out to some of the ears of corn.
"Awwwuuuu..." He cooed out. "Awwwuuuu..." Pocahontas giggled at her son's antics. "Corn..." She repeated, holding her son higher so he could get a clear view of the corn. "Awwuu..." He repeated.
Pocahontas and Nakoma smiled again. "How cute..." Nakoma pointed out as she looked at the little baby in Pocahontas' arms who was now looking at her with his big blue eyes. Songaa squealed and waved at her. Nakoma giggled and held Songaa's little hand in hers.
Pocahontas smiled. "He is..." She added, smiling at Songaa who continued to gurgle and squirm. "Here..." Nakoma replied as she gave Pocahontas a small basket of corn. "Maybe, you can some corn meal for him." "Thank you." Pocahontas replied as she accepted the basket.
"Nakoma, Pochontas!" A voice called out as three women approached them with baskets of corn on top of their heads. "We got corn to harvest!" "Oh, sorry, Makota...!" Nakoma replied. "We were just showing Songaa the fields."
"Her 'adopted' son..." Makota pointed out. "No child of Powhatan would be born with...skin like that..." "And what's that supposed to mean?" Pocahontas asked, a bit offended. "Well, it's don't see why you should keep that...thing in our village." Makota replied.
"I agree." Another woman named Niyona spoke. "I don't know what Chief Powhatan was thinking, letting you raise that...devil..." "He is not a devil!" Pocahontas replied, sternly. "Songaa is just as human as any one of us!" Songaa grew upset and began to whimper
"You gave it a name?" Makota asked. "This little...savage?" "Do not call him a savage!" Pocahontas yelled, cradling a whimpering Songaa closer to her. "Pale-skin or not, he is my son!" The women snickered in amusement.
"Makota, leave her alone!" Nakoma pointed out. "If Pocahontas wants to keep him, let her keep him." Makota scoffed. "Anyway, we have corn to harvest." She pointed out. "Come on, Niyona. Leave the Chief's daughter with her little pale-skinned pet."
"I agree." One woman spoke up. "That child won't last long, he would freeze to death in winter or scorch in the summer heat." "What harm can than that little...pale child do to us?" Another woman laughed as they went off to their harvesting.
Pocahontas glared at them as she heard whimpering. Looking down to see Songaa upset and on the verge of crying, she grew worried and gently bounced him in her arms. "Shhh...Songaa...it's alright...I'm here." She soothed.
Flit hummed softly while Meeko climbed up Pocahontas's shoulder and gently patted him on the head. Songaa immediately calmed down and snuggled close to Pocahontas. Nakoma placed a hand on Pocahontas' shoulder.
"Don't listen to them." Nakoma assured. "They're just jealous..." "It's alright, my son is special..." Pocahontas replied, with a proud smile. "One day, Songaa will show the whole Powhatan nation just how special he is"
