Clarke Griffin
Clarke is dreaming she knows that's what is happening here she can actually feel herself in her bed but like always when one of these kinds of dreams happen to her there's nothing she can do but let things play out. She's lying down in the dream like always but she doesn't know where she is because of the fire in the dream, there is fire all around her but the fire in this dream isn't actually the worse part, it's him.
Clarke doesn't know who he is she's never managed to see his face but there has always been someone else there in the fire with her, he's so close to her but he's just out of her reach. She doesn't know why but Clarke wants to reach him to grab hold of him so they can be with each other, she might not know who the guy is but she knows she loves him and she wants them to be together. Clarke can't reach him though, the fire always stops her from reaching him, from helping him from saving them both from the fire that is all around him and that's what the worst part of the dream is.
Like always the dream plays out in Clarke's head, she tries and fails to reach the guy in the dream and that is when she wakes up in her bed like she was waking up from any other dream. Letting out a frustrated sigh at having the dream interrupt her sleep yet again Clarke remained where she was staring up at the white and pink swirls on her bedroom sealing not ready to get up just yet.
That dream had been a problem for her ever since she was little and she had yet to find a way to stop it from happening, it didn't happen every night, in fact Clarke could go weeks without having that dream but it always came bag to upset her. It could happen at any time of year the dream but in her experience it was more likely to happen on the build up to her birthday so being two weeks out as they were Clarke should have been expecting this but it still stung to experience the dream again. She had no idea who the guy in the dream was meant to represent but Clarke felt this love for him when she was in the dream that made it really hurt to not be able to reach him, she knew it was silly but when ever she had the dream she felt a real sense of loss afterwards.
Clarke would have remained where she was in bed for a bit longer but as she lay there thinking about her dream a knock at her door suddenly demanded her attention. 'Clarke,' her mum called out from the other side of the door as Clarke sat up in bed 'breakfast is almost ready so you'll want to come down soon.'
'Sure, I'll be there in a minute,' Clarke called back falling in to a sitting position now in bed leaning back on the carved painted white head board of her bed. Sitting there Clarke thought about her dream again, there were a lot of things she didn't understand about her life, there were a lot of things about her that were frankly weird but her dream was something she really wished she could understand.
Deciding to try her best to put thoughts of her dream to one side Clarke tried to get the day started right, getting out of bed she took five steps across her bedroom and picked up her dressing gown off its hook. Slipping her dressing gown on to her curved but slim frame Clarke looked at the large double windows of her bedroom, her curtains were still closed but she could still see mourning light through the light silky material and seeing this made her smile. Something about seeing and feeling sun on her face had always cheered Clarke up and right now after experiencing her dream again she could really use a bit of cheer so seeing the sun was nice.
Smiling slightly now Clarke took three steps across her bedroom and stepped out on to the landing heading down stairs to her parents, she knew they would be in the kitchen so she needed to make her way to the back of the house. Clarke's mum was a doctor and her dad was an engineer who worked at a kind of place where he wasn't allowed to talk about his work too much so Clarke had been lucky enough to be born in to money and there house reflected that. Clarke had been inside bigger houses in her life but Clarke did understand she and her parents were well off, their house was the kind of place that was big enough to have a good sized games room and even a little library that doubled as a spare bedroom.
Walking into the kitchen at the back of the house which looked out at the garden Clarke found her dad sitting at the breakfast bar eating what looked to be eggs and reading text displayed on his ipad and her mum working at one of the hobs cooking more eggs. Clarke's mum was a real career woman a big time surgeon and all that but she also liked to cook whenever she was able to do so which in turn meant Clarke often ended up having breakfast made for her even now when she was coming up to seventeen.
'You sleep well honey,' Clarke's mum asked moving around the kitchen that like most of the house was a large well-built space as Clarke sat down at the breakfast bar next to her dad who only briefly looked up from his ipad. There was a subtext to her mums question Clarke knew, her mum was really asking if the dream she and her dad knew she had trouble with this time of year had given her any trouble while she slept the answer to which was yes.
'I slept fine,' Clarke lied plastering what she hoped was a convincing smile on her face as her mum looked at her a definite note of concern on her face. Clarke didn't like lying to either of her parents but it was for the best she lied about this, telling them would only worry them which in turn could well lead to them trying some new way of sorting it and that sort of thing never ended well.
Clarke's mum did not look convinced but she didn't say anything either, she just put a plate of eggs in front of her as she came round to sit next to Clarke having sorted a plate of eggs for herself as well. They all sat in silence for a minute here eating which Clarke for her part would have preferred but her dad had already started eating so he was able to finish first which gave him a chance to speak and break the silence.
'You know Clarke,' her dad began slowly looking away from his ipad now and from the sounds of his voice picking his words carefully 'it's not too late, plans could change if you decided you wanted an actual birthday party.' Hearing this Clarke stopped eating and gave her dad a pointed look a response she hoped would be enough but it wasn't 'o don't be like that,' her dad retorted defensively 'you know I kind of miss having a party to celebrate your birthday.'
'Parties are nice dad sure,' Clarke admitted submitting to at least this point of her dads 'but when most of your friends have birthdays on the same day as you, birthday parties, well they kind of lose their appeal.' It was true Clarke liked going to a party just as much as anyone but more or less all the people she had grown up with had been born on the same day as she was so it felt less special plus there was the fact that she had been born on Halloween which was something that really changed dynamics.
'Well I remember we had some rather nice joint parties when you guys were young,' her dad countered still trying to advance this point of his 'I remember once when you were really little we got seven of you together for one party.'
'That's because we were all young,' Clarke retorted not backing down on this 'none of us knew enough to know how weird we all are back then.'
'None of you guys a weird Clarke,' her mum countered speaking up now in response to Clarke getting on to this subject 'you and your friends are just unusually gifted Clarke that's all, it happens quite a bit actually you know children being gifted.'
Clarke knew she should let this point go really she did but she was annoyed now so it was difficult to do that 'yeah, right,' she retorted sarcasm dripping off her voice 'I'm sure most gifted girls as you put itknow everything there is to know about anatomy when there five.' She paused here to take in a breath but Clarke was far from done 'how about the fact I can just speak three languages,' she continued flexing and articulating with her hands 'when I've barely even tried to learn them and of course there's all the self-defence moves I somehow know.'
Having said this Clarke went quiet now calming down slightly and as she did so she regretted her words, she had been on edge because of her dream but it was wrong of her to just lash out like that. In response to her little outburst Clarkes mum had finished eating and was now staring her down Clarke had brought things up her mum didn't like to talk about she knew but thankfully she wasn't shouting in response, at least not yet.
'I think your tired Clarke,' her mum said in a stony stern voice 'I think it would be a good idea if you go shower so you can wake up a bit and get your head on straight.'
Part of Clarke wanted to fight her mum on this but she didn't in the end she got up and started heading back up stair so she could shower and get ready for school which she should do if she was showering. It hadn't been ok to snap at her mum like that however hard and difficult birthdays could be for her, most of the time Clarke could forget how different she was from normal girls, she could pretend all the things she knew and could do were just that things she could just do and she could try to ignore the other stuff. However when things were building up to her birthday like they were today and would be for two weeks or so it became harder and harder to try and pretend to be normal and ignore all the things that made her so different from everyone else.
When she had been little Clarke hadn't realised she was different everything had just seemed normal to her on some level she had understood she was developing faster than other kids sure but there had been the others. Back then Clarke and the others who had been born on that Halloween night 17 years ago had been young so none of them had really been able to tell there was something different about all of them, something that set them apart. That hadn't lasted forever though by the time Clarke and her friends where ten and they were all being put in top set classes they had come to realise something about them was different, they didn't know what it was but they knew there was something.
Getting upstairs Clarke went through the motions of getting ready for school, she showered, saw to her hair and dressed in her school uniform which unlike others she knew she kept exactly how it was supposed to be. Clarke was a real rule follower when it came to school, she just didn't see why anyone would want to mess with their uniform that being said though she did wear a small rainbow flag badge on her uniform jacket, she felt that was like an ok little rebellion. Having dressed for school now Clarke picked up her school bag that she kept in one corner of her room next to her desk and rapping it around her shoulder she headed out of her room ready to meet the day.
Like most days Clarkes dad ended up being the one driving Clarke to school his offices were close to the school so it tended to make sense that they did things that way so after a brief moment to say goodbye to her mum Clarke found herself in her dads high priced car being driven to the school. Clarke and her dad mostly sat in silence as he drove she would guess he like her didn't know what to say after their little disagreement earlier, Clarke for her part preferred the silence so she as a pose to saying anything just looked out the car window at the houses as they passed by. Most of which were either the same size or bigger than there's some where so big they might be considered too big at least that was Clarke's opinion, she and her parents lived in what might be called the well to do part of town.
Arkadia wasn't far away from New Orleans so frankly being so close to a big city like that with lots of history meant a lot had happened within their town. People tried to make a big thing of it Clarke knew but basically for a hundred years rich people had been coming to live in Arkadia when they wanted to be away from the city, plus Arkadia was on high ground so there was that as well. Sadly though Arkadia wasn't just a place where the rich or super rich decided to live or spend time when they had come to the decision they disliked the idea of city living, there was more to Arkadia than that unfortunately.
If Arkadia ever actually had a middle class they were forced out a long time ago, no one talked about it but Clarke knew, everyone knew that certain people had wanted the good quality high ground to them self's so that meant that things were a certain way within Arkadia. Clarke was on one side of the divide she knew that very well but she did know there was a divide unlike certain people she knew, within Arkadia you were either rich or you worked for rich people making sure there life style within town was maintained. Some people could get paid well doing that but Clarke understood that there were many that didn't get paid well so Arkadia was a place with next to no middle class.
It took a few minutes but eventually Clarke's dad pulled up the car beside several rather flashy others in the official disembarking area of her school which was a sprawling mess of old and new buildings. 'Well here we are,' Clarke's dad announced turning off the car as he brought them to a halt 'have a good day at school Clarke,' he added smiling brightly at her.
'You have a good day at work as well dad,' Clarke responded getting out of the car an pulling her school bag with her as she did so calling goodbye as well as she shut the door. Clarke knew she should probably have said something about the birthday issue to her dad before they separated but it was uncomfortable so she felt like it would be better if she let the subject drop instead.
Stepping away from the cars as her dad drove away Clarke moved on to the foot path and started walking away from the disembarking area into the mass of school uniforms that was moving around outside like every morning. It took a minute of walking but eventually Clarke moved on to the grass that was in front of the main building of the school and if on cue that was when two friends of Clarke's Josephine and Harper just appeared walking either side of her.
'Where have you been, we have a big problem,' Josephine asked her voice urgent for some reason Clarke didn't understand, Josephine was the kind of girl who wore designer clothes and frankly had anger management issues so she could overreact. Even though there was a school dress code Josephine more or less just ignored it and came to school in whatever she wanted, none of the teachers would ever stop her though because of whom her dad is.
'It's just a problem not a big problem Josephine, don't scare her before the day has even started,' Harper corrected sending Josephine a meaningful look as she spoke, Harper was the kind of girl people would describe as the nice one, she was really into things like flowers and all that stuff. Like Clarke she wore her school uniform but unlike Clarke she was a fan of accessorizing with flowers or anything that had a feel of nature really.
'Well out with it then,' Clarke demanded getting a little annoyed with the beating around the bush now, Clarke would like to think people would describe her as the smart one of her little group but she knew they probably use different words in reality.
'It's Roma,' Josephine began disapproval and disdain practically dripping off her voice 'we both heard this morning that her dad is looking to book green hill hall on Halloween, you know what that means?'
'What,' Clarke asked already sensing where this was going but asking the question anyway, Roma was definitely not a friend to her or anyone who she would say was a friend of hers.
'It means she's looking to be the one doing the birthday celebrations this year,' Josephine said through gritted teeth her face contorted in a scowl. 'That bitch wants to be the centre of attention,' Josephine more or less snarled now stopping in her tracks getting them all to stop at the base of the hill that led up to the main building 'she wants all of us gathered around her on such an important day.'
'Josephine is being a bit dramatic but she's not wrong,' Harper sighed laying a comforting hand on their friends shoulder 'that is what Roma wants and with who she's doing right now she'll get a lot of us there, she'll get to act like she's at the centre of the primes Clarke.'
'You know I am not a fan of any of us referring to us as primes,' Clarke remarked rolling her eyes and letting out a large sigh 'really I don't get why there needs to be any name a tall.'
'That's beside the point Clarke,' Josephine countered glossing over this point 'it's our birthday Clarke, a day we all share but Roma wants it to be all about her and with Bellamy behind her that will be what happens.' As she said this last part Josephine gave Clarke an especially pointed look which clearly said look what the guy who is your enemy and sometimes friend is doing with the girl you hate, a move Josephine will know will annoy Clarke.
'What do you two actually suggest we do,' Clarke sighed feeling exasperated that she had just had this fight with her dad this mourning and now she was here being faced with the same problem.
'Well,' Harper began smiling having apparently put thought into this 'obviously none of us three would go to Roma's party plus Jasper and Monty will follow our lead.'
'Yeah,' Josephine nodded joining in smiling now 'so that's five primes Roma isn't going to get for her little party right there, we just need two more and then we have the majority.'
'True,' Clarke shrugged still feeling exasperated by this conversation the whole counting up of people was just weird 'however most of who's left are going to side with Bellamy, there is Wells but that would still leave you guys one short.'
'Well we have talked about that as well,' Harper began speaking slowly sounding out each word seemingly embarrassed 'and we were thinking, as in we think that if you, that is Clarke that you could talk to Raven?'
'Seriously,' Clarke said surprised to be hearing this 'you guys honestly think that Raven will do anything I ask and besides none of us actually have any plans for Halloween just yet.'
'This is about people not doing something,' Josephine defended pursing her lips in a rather childish way 'you just need to get Raven not to go to Roma's party.' Josephine paused for a moment here taking in a deep breath but then continued 'Clarke I would do it but frankly she doesn't want to hear from me, she wants to hear from you Clarke and besides its Raven's birthday too I'm sure there are things she would rather be doing.'
Clarke really didn't think this would work, a year ago there had been some stuff with this boy Finn and it had concerned both Clarke and Raven. Sadly as a result of what had played out with Finn things had been rather tense between her and Raven ever since so Clarke really doubted her going to Raven and asking her not to go to Roma's party would actually work. If Clarke thought it would work she would do it, everything Josephine and Harper were saying about Roma was actually true but Clarke did not see this working sadly.
As Clarke thought this over and tried to think if there was any other way of doing this she heard a familiar mocking voice call from behind her 'in no hurry to get to class princess.'
Turning upon hearing this Clarke saw the tall dark and handsome guy who was exactly the same age as her she knew right away would be there walking towards her and the others. Like her Bellamy was flanked by two friends right now and like the rest Murphy and Miller were both as Josephine liked to call them Primes so the numbers were even but that wouldn't stop Bellamy, he was a rather confident guy so something like numbers would never stop him.
Bellamy's group didn't stop moving towards them until they were right in front of them in fact by the time Bellamy stopped he was towering over Clarke getting very close. Miller and Murphy stayed back though as did Josephine and Harper they all knew when Clarke and Bellamy were facing each other up it was best to keep their distance, Miller and Murphy smiled mockingly as guys did at Clarke in this moment but that was it. Interestingly both those names weren't there actual names Murphy and Miller both went by there last names for some reason; neither of them ever really explained why they didn't like their first and actual names.
'You know princess,' Bellamy said looking down at her smirking 'some of us actually have to earn the right to go here so it might be nice if you at least pretend that you don't have it as easy as you do here.'
Gritting her teeth Clarke glared up at Bellamy feeling anger well up within her as well as something else which she knew Bellamy would be able to feel. Most the kids that went here came from money and there were plenty who were richer than Clarke's parents, Josephine being a big example of that but she was the only one Bellamy called princess. Her parents might not be rich but they had influence around town and within the school, quite a lot of influence actually with all the groups they were both a part of and Bellamy knew this hence the nick name, which she hated.
'You know Bellamy,' Clarke began her voice cold 'if you want to have a competition to see who's smarter between the two of us we can go there again if you like, I trust you remember what happened last time.' The glare Bellamy shot down at her and the desire to lash out she felt made it clear to Clarke that Bellamy did in fact remember and he also remembers who won last time between the two of them.
Bellamy opened his mouth to respond to Clarke with something ubseen no doubt but before he could say anything Miller who was normally the voice of reason laid a hand on Bellamy's shoulder. 'Now that's enough you two,' he began in a calm voice pulling Bellamy back slightly 'you have both taken a shot at each other let's leave it, I'd think both of you have had enough detention because of the other.'
Clarke continued to glare daggers at Bellamy as he backed away but both she and Bellamy did as Miller suggested backing away letting this little trading of words end. Clarke didn't know what it was but there had always been something about Bellamy that set certain things off within her and she knew it was the same for him; they didn't always fight like this so they had talked about it. There were the obvious differences between them of course which did make things hard but there had always been something more that was a bit harder to define that existed between the two of them.
It went right back to the beginning as well Clarke knew both she and Bellamy had been told stories about what they were like as babies, they'd be super affectionate around each other one minute and aggressive the next. There had never been a middle ground between them apparently they were either in the depths of hatred with each other or in the depths of something else which had and still did perplex many, Clarke knew her and Bellamy both had some idea of why things were like this between them though.
Clarke didn't know why she and Bellamy had such a problem being around each other and she knew it was a mystery to him as well but they both knew part of the answer. Neither of them liked to talk about it but the fact that they could both feel the others emotions and had a very good sense of where the other was all the time had to have something to do with it all.
Interesting ending there for you guys I hope in terms of this chapter, I imagine you have questions but don't worry I should be able to get chapter 3 to you this time next week.
