They had missed the Annual Midvale Easter Egg Hunt when Esme came down with a 24-hour bug the day before Easter, and her moms didn't want her to have anything that might upset her stomach the next day. Kara insisted that they could still have their own Egg Hunt in the forest once she was feeling better. Lena, who had been invited by Kara to join them for Easter, snuck out early Easter Monday intending to buy up the remaining mini chocolate eggs at the local supermarket for the hunt. She ran into Kara near the checkout, it turned out that they'd had the same idea, and when they came back to Eliza's house Alex and Kelly groaned at the sight of all of the chocolate.
"Esme is not eating all of that," Alex told her. "Leave some here, hide it, take it back to National City if you want but that's far too much."
"Don't be silly, Kara will eat most of it," Lena told her. "We brought the small ones for Esme to find, and the paper eggs for the adults when she wants to take a turn at hiding them. The largest chocolate egg is for the adult who finds the most paper eggs."
"Plus everything was on sale," Kara told them, snacking on the chocolate from the egg Eliza had brought her for Easter. "It's going to be great."
When they arrived at the forest the signs directing visitors to the egg hunt were still up. Alex and Kelly went with Eliza to begin hiding the eggs, while Kara and Lena waited with Esme at the car. Once they were finished, Kara would hear them call and know where to go.
"Auntie Lena, you can help me look and then we can hide the paper ones together," Esme told her while they waited.
"What if Auntie Lena wants to win the big egg?" Kara asked. "Maybe I should help you hide the paper eggs instead."
"No it's fine," Lena told her. "I think hiding eggs sounds much more fun."
"Yes, and remember Auntie Kara, no using your powers."
That had been the rule for when they were due to join the other families on Easter Sunday, no-one had mentioned changing it. Lena smiled at Kara, hoping that she didn't mind Esme choosing her to help with the egg hunt.
Alex knew how many eggs were hidden and she counted down as Esme, with a little help from Lena, found them one by one. Lena was really having fun with looking for the eggs, checking under leaves and lifting up a few rocks as if Esme's moms would have hidden them underneath. Kara kept trying to given them hints when she spotted an egg, but Esme reminded her that Lena was helping. When Esme triumphantly found the last two eggs, Kelly agreed to let her have one before she started hiding the paper eggs.
"Okay now back to the car, please," Emse said, remembering to be polite at the end. "Auntie Lena and I have our turn now."
"Okay, remember only in the area marked by the red spray-painted eggs on the trees, that's the official egg hunt border," Alex reminded her.
Lena nodded to show she understood and they waited until Esme felt sure they were out of hearing distance. The little girl took Lena's free hand (the other was holding the paper eggs) and began leading her to the places where she wanted to put the eggs.
"You might have to lift me up to get some of them," Esme told her.
"You know, Auntie Kara would have been good at this. She could have flown up and put them really high."
"Uh-uh, no powers remember?"
"You're right."
"She might have climbed the tree though. Can you climb trees?"
Lena shook her head, "no, sorry."
"That's okay, maybe later we can hide them using powers and them get to find them using powers."
"If your moms say that it's okay."
Once all of the paper eggs were hidden they called the others back. Esme laughed as Kara kept jumping up and down trying to reach one of the eggs on a tree branch just out of reach. Lena had lifted her up to reach it and it was a little too far for Kara when she couldn't use her powers. A few moments later, as Kara gave up, Kelly came by and picked up a long stick, using it to knock the piece of paper down. Alex high-fived her. At another high one, Alex lifted Kelly so she could reach the egg. Kara tried to team up with Eliza, but her mother had only found one - too busy watching her daughters and laughing with Esme to really search.
Once all of the paper eggs were found and counted, Kelly was declared the winner. As they'd brought lunch with them, they returned to the picnic area and sat at the wooden tables for a rest. Esme told them her idea about using powers for the egg hunt. Now that Kara's secret identity was known, no-one had any objections.
"I'm on Nana's team," Esme told them.
"I'm on Auntie Lena's team," Kara quickly put in before Esme could pair her with Alex or Kelly.
"No fair, we don't have powers," Alex reminded them.
"We'll hide the eggs," Kelly told her.
So Eliza, Esme, Kara and Lena went back to the car with the remains of the picnic to wait. Kara and Lena ended up in the back seat together, while Esme helped Eliza choose some music for them to listen to.
"Alex is going to choose some impossible places," Kara whispered to her. "We'll have to let Esme find the easy ones and look for the rest."
Lena smiled, "of course."
Esme and Eliza went to one side of the area so Kara led Lena away to the other. Kara flew up for a better look around while Lena looked along the ground. She spotted one tucked between some fallen leaves and made a note of it for later.
The hunt lasted longer than the previous ones. Kara went over to complain to Alex about a paper egg which she'd only just been able to find, and Lena kept back not wanting to get between the two sisters. Kelly tried to calm them down but they ended up arguing about a previous egg hunt from when they were children and Eliza had to come over and talk to them.
A small hand slipped into Lena's and she looked down at Esme, "hey, you okay?"
Esme nodded, "I found another one, but I'm not allowed to fly without someone to catch me."
"Why don't I help you."
Lena followed Esme over to the tree she'd found and held out her arms ready to catch her or use her magic to save Esme if required. Esme made it to the branch of the tree okay, she kept her balance long enough to pick up the paper, but then she lost her concentration and landed on the branch. Instinctively she wrapped her arms and legs around it, holding on tightly.
"Are you okay?" Lena called up.
"Yes. I just need a moment."
She was only a little way off the ground, Lena would be able to catch her if she fell. If the branch had been another foot lower Lena could have reached up to help her. If there were any spells she could have used to help her, they had vanished from her memory. All she could do was watch and wait. Lena didn't dare to take her eyes off Esme to call for help, but something must have alerted Kara to the situation as she rushed over.
Lena watched as Kara flew up to Esme and wrapped her arms around the little girl, "I've got you. You're okay."
Esme smiled as she let go and Kara flew her back down to the ground. She ran over to her moms for a hug while Kara stayed with Lena.
"You okay?" Kara asked her.
Lena nodded, "it just scared me a bit."
"You would have caught her. It wasn't that far."
Lena nodded, but she was picturing the worst-case scenarios in her head.
"Hey," Kara placed a hand on Lena's arm, "she's fine."
Lena moved towards Kara, her eyes already filling with tears, Kara automatically stepped forward with her arms held out to hug her. While Kara soothed her with comforting words, reminding her that Esme was fine, Alex and Kelly were hugging their daughter who was a little quicker at getting over her fright.
"We'll meet you back at the car," Lena heard Eliza tell Kara,
When it was quiet again, Lena pulled away, wiping the tears from her face, "I'm sorry."
"What for?"
"Ruining the egg hunt."
"How did you ruin it? Alex and I were the ones fighting. You were helping Esme."
"I shouldn't have let her go into the tree while you were distracted."
"Lena, you wouldn't let anything happen to her, even if it meant climbing into a tree you would have saved her."
"But I froze, I couldn't do magic or call for help, or anything."
"Well I heard you."
Lena frowned, "but I didn't say anything."
"Your heartbeat warned me."
"My what?"
"I have super-hearing, I can hear your heartbeat and I heard it beating faster so I knew something was wrong."
"But you were busy fighting with Alex..."
"Yeah," Kara blushed, "I kind of listen out for it, I like to know you're safe."
"You do?"
"You're not angry, are you? I can stop if you want."
Lena smiled at her, "why would I be angry at you for caring about me?"
"I don't know, you might think I'm invading your privacy or something."
"Hmm, yes. I suppose so, but it's not like you're listening all the time, right?"
Kara looked down at the ground and didn't answer.
"Kara?"
"I just..." Kara looked up into Lena's eyes, wanting her to understand, "I love you."
She blurted the words out, knowing that it was the only way to let Lena know why she did it. Lena looked surprised.
"It's okay if you don't fell the same way," Kara quickly added. "I..."
Before she could lie and promise to stop listening, Lena had kissed her. Kara was so shocked she stood completely still. It wasn't until she heard Esme's voice, all the way in the car, telling Eliza what she'd heard Kara say that she realised having a niece who could share her powers that she realised how Alex had felt growing up with a little sister who could hear her secrets.
"Um, we should go this way," Kara took Lena's hand and led her deeper into the forest.
"What? Why?"
"To get out of range of Esme's powers," Kara whispered.
It took Lena a moment to understand and she smiled.
